followingexercisefromthethisweeksstudyguide:Special Occasion: Imagine that you
want to buy a special new dress or suit for a party at your countrys embassy in Ankara. Explain
your situation, and ask directions to an appropriate shop. What would you say once you arrived?
How would ask for what you want? What if the clothes you tried on were too tight? What if you
want to try a different color, or negotiate the price?
In this scenario, one student plays the customer looking for a dress and the other role plays the
shop keeper. Have students switch roles.
Part C: Whole group together (15-20 minutes)
Activity 1: Have each student describe his/her favorite piece of clothing and where it was
purchased.
Activity 2: Recreate a bazaar atmosphere in which some students are buyers others are vendors.
If it is just you and a few students, then you can role play the part of the vendor and the students
can role play customers bargaining for the different objects you brought to sell.
Activity 3: Cultural activity you planned (if there is time).
Give the students a chance to ask questions in English during the last 5-10 minutes. This is
a good time to discuss cultural issues that came up during the session. End the session on a
positive note. Practice appropriate parting/goodbye/see you again phrases.
