Grade Level: 1st Grade Content Area: Math Basic Productivity Tool Used: The Graph Club Standards Addressed: CCGPS.1.MD.4 Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories; ask and answer questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category, and how many more or less are in one category than in another Blooms Level of Critical Thinking: Remembering Understanding Applying Analyzing Evaluating Creating Description of how to implement in the class: This activity will begin with the students at their computers with the teacher in front. The teacher will have Graph Club pulled up on the board. She will walk her students through the steps of opening the program. Then she will introduce the program. She will show students how they can pull the picture icons down and how to add more of an item to their graph in multiple ways. She will let students explore through the pictures to see how many different types they have. Then she will show them that the program offers many types of graphs: bar, line, circle, and picture graphs. Students will examine each on their own and determine which one they like the best and why. Then the teacher will explain to them how each works and how they represent the same information. Next, she will introduce the topic. She will ask her students what are the four different seasons. As they tell her each one she will have one student select a picture that best resembles the season. Once she has the four seasons with their pictures she can ask students to raise their hands for their favorite season. Once the teacher has all of the numbers on her graph, she will ask students to do the same to theirs. Once all of the students have their graph with the correct numbers, the teacher should ask questions about the graph. You can begin asking easier questions such as Which season did the most people like or Which season was least picked as a favorite. Next try using terms such as greater than, less than, and equal to. If you want to really challenge students try asking how many more people like one particular season than another. Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi): The LoTi of this lesson would be at a level 2. This is because the teacher walked students through the steps and gave them the information. If you wanted to increase LoTi level you could have students collect data of their own and plot it themselves. Description of the sample spreadsheet and graph/chart provided *: The graph displays the data collected as students selected their favorite season. The final graphs can be used to analyze the data provided with mathematical concepts such as more, less, equal, etc. Other comments about your proposed spreadsheet/graph/chart activity: This spreadsheet was made for an introductory lesson to using Graph Club. It is also made for younger students. You could have older students do a lot more with this program. You could have students come up with a poll and collect their own data and create a graph. This way they would be at a higher LoTi and Blooms Level of Thinking. You could also print out your students graphs and post them outside the classroom with unanswered math questions. This way students from other classes could be engaging in the project as well!
