Planting trees for Arbor Day

CTS, providing services to traumatized

children, hosts anniversary gala May 8
to raise money for recreation center
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Community Treatment Solutions, a non-profit organization in
Moorestown established in 1990,
is dedicated to providing services
to children and youth who have
been traumatized by abuse, neglect, abandonment and even trafficking, almost all suffering from
delayed development and trauma.
Without CTS, these children
would fall outside the system,
meaning they would not get the
care, supervision, clinical services and therapy they need.
CTS provides care and treatments for those children, but it
cant provide the children with a
place they can call their own, as
most need supervision.
However, CTS is working on
getting that place for those in its
care. It is looking to build a recreation center where children in
the program can hang out and
relax.
To help gain funds for the
recreation center, CTS will cele-

brate its 25th anniversary on May

8 with a gala. To commemorate
the milestone and all the children
it has helped over the years, CTS
is organizing a Shining Star Gala
at the Skybox Event Center in
Philadelphia. The event starts at
6:30 p.m. and includes a wine-tasting, CTS informative video, dinner, award presentation, dancing
and auctions, where all proceeds
go toward its cause.
Come out to support the children who have been through a lot
of trauma in their lives and to
give them a chance to have a place
of their own, where they can act
like regular kids. A place to just
play, be able to express themselves creatively and do other
things they might not normally
get to do, outside of the school
day or treatment programs
theyre involved in, Mark Hatoff,
director of development at CTS,
said.
The idea for the recreation center is for it to be a place where

of Arbor Day at Wesley Bishop Park in Moorestown. Moorestown held its and the states Arbor Day
celebration on Friday, April 24 at the park, where beforehand they planted 75 trees provided by the
Moorestown Tree Planting and Preservation Committee. For more photos, please see page 19.

With the theme of Ending

Hunger One Step at a Time,
CROP Hunger Walks are events
in which money is raised to combat world hunger through participants walking one-, three- or fivemile distances to simulate the distances in which the disadvantaged must walk in some countries for clean water and food.
The money raised through
CROP Hunger Walks is sent to
Church World Service, the charitable Christian ministry group of
37 denominations, which provides food to those in need around
the world, as well as providing
tools to allow those in need to sustain themselves with donations
such as seeds, agricultural tools,
technical training and wells and
water systems.
Mae
Trebing
of
Saint
Matthews Lutheran Church,
overall event coordinator for this
years Moorestown event, de-

scribed the event as a simple way

to raise money for those who need
it while learning what they have
to deal with on a daily basis.
A lot of people in the world
have to walk long distances to get
food and water, Trebing said.
Its a shame that more countries
dont pay more attention to that,
but kids deserve nice, clean
water.
According to Church World
Service, more than 2,000 communities in the United States come
together for more than 1,600
CROP Hunger Walks each year.
Trebing said since 1974, the
Moorestown event has raised almost $558,000, and of that, more
than $136,000 has actually stayed
in Moorestown to support
hunger-related programs through
local food pantries at Saint
Matthews, Moorestown First

Moorestown Township Public

Schools Superintendent Timothy
Rehm announced that the 20152016 school year calendar has
been updated and the board approved those revisions at its meeting on Tuesday, April 21. Changes
include school starting for all students Sept. 8, schools being open
on Election Day, four snow makeup days and graduation on June
22, 2016.
These changes to the calendar
were brought about by the many
snow days that interfered with
the students education as well as
their spring recess the past two
years. Last year, there were three
days students had to come in dur-

ing spring recess. This year, the

schools were open during spring
recess on Friday, April 10, where
only 63 percent of students attended.
We already had our calendar
put together for next year. We got
together, the MEA and administration, and looked at this asking,
How can we work toward revising this calendar without facing
the same situation next year?
Rehm said.
Members of the Moorestown
Education Association, the districts administration, parents,
the township and the board
worked together to expand the
calendar.
The changes on the calendar
include teachers coming in on
Sept. 2 and 3; the district being

closed Sept. 4; all students starting after Labor Day on Sept. 8,

with special schedules for students who usually get a Transition Day; a full day of school on
Election Day; four make-up snow
days built into the calendar,
rather than two; and graduation
being moved a day forward to
Wednesday, June 22, 2016.
With this new calendar, there
are no instructional days lost, as
all required student and teacher
days are met, with 182 days for
students and 185 days for teachers.
We were very successful, and I
thank the MEA, administration,
parents, the township and the
board for their input on this. We
think weve come up with a solution to a potential problem. We
feel we have a great calendar for
next year, Rehm said.
The board unanimously agreed
to approve the revised calendar.
I think it is a very good adjustment and incredibly thoughtful,
Board President Kathy Goldenberg said.
The revised calendar can be
found at the MTPS website,
www.mtps.com.
In other news:
Former WAMS student Claire
Kenny won the Cherry Hill
Barnes & Noble My Favorite
Teacher Contest, writing about
language arts teacher Peg Valora.
WAMS civics teacher Katie
Dickstein was a runner-up in
South Jersey Magazines Top
Teachers 2015. She was nominated by eighth-grader Carlie
MacMillan.
Gavin Quinn, with an MA
from Seton Hall University, was
approved as the science supervisor for the district.
MTPS plans to have a construction calendar and FAQ for
the work being done on the
schools as per the Building Excellence Referendum on the website
that is broken up by school by
May 1. At the May 19 public meeting, there will be a multi-media
presentation on what is happening in each school over the summer months.
The next MTPS Board of Education meeting will be May 19 at
7:30 p.m. at WAMS.

in our opinion

Enough regulation already!

We should promote innovation, not curb it

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033

Dan McDonough Jr.

ix years ago, in 2009, a man had

a vision of changing the way a
long-standing industry operated. He felt the way the industry was
run wasnt the most efficient, wasnt
the most effective, hadnt adapted with
the times and didnt provide consumers with the best experience at the
best price.
Today, that mans company, Uber, is
well known and is in cities across the
country.
The company uses the person-to-person model to offer taxi-like services to
people through a mobile app. Users
download the app, select a car in their
area they want to use for the ride and
pay for the fare. The fare is listed based
on the trips length, and no cash is
needed while taking the trip.
Uber is catching on like wildfire
from users, who enjoy its accessibility selecting a ride with a few taps on
the phone instead of calling a taxi
company and waiting long times for

the drivers arrival and also its

cheaper price.
Uber also provides jobs to drivers
who are looking to earn extra money.
But this could all come crashing to a
halt, Uber says, if a New Jersey bill is
passed that would put onerous regulations on the company.
The legislation would require ridehailing companies such as Uber to display a Motor Vehicle Commission
marker when drivers are searching for
fares and would require background
checks for drivers, safety inspections
for vehicles and higher insurance regulations.
An Uber spokesman said the company already provides more insurance

than taxi companies do, and said if the

bill is passed, the company might be
forced out of New Jersey, resulting in
the loss of more than 5,000 jobs.
A similar bill in Kansas was struck
down by Gov. Sam Brownbacks veto,
and we couldnt agree more with his
reasoning:
Kansas should be known as a state
that embraces economic growth and
innovation. The jobs created by this
new industry can bring opportunity to
many Kansas families. An open and
free marketplace often results in higher quality products at a more affordable price.
New Jersey, similarly, should be a
state that embraces economic growth
and innovation. Uber found a way to
compete in the transportation market.
Good for them. They should be praised
for that, not overregulated to the point
of extinction.
If taxi companies cant compete, too
bad. Thats called business.

The third floor of the Church

Street Recreation Center was
standing room only for the first

Third Floor Caf Live on Friday,

April 17. With 26 performers in 18
different acts, the evening was the
perfect end to a hectic week. The
softly lit room with comfy couches and relaxed seating offered

high school students a great way

to unwind and listen to classmates perform.
The Third Floor Caf Live is
the newest program provided by
the Department of Parks & Recreation. By offering teens a local,
safe, entertaining evening parents were assured of safety and
students were assured a good
time. The goal of the department
is to offer Moorestown citizens,
healthy and safe recreational activities that are focused on building community. On all accounts,
the evening was a tremendous
success.
The department wishes to
thank the following individuals
and organizations for their help
in producing this evening for
teens. First, thank you to the
many parent volunteers who
helped to chaperone and provided
set-up, oversight and clean-up for
the evening. Thank you to community partners Passariellos,
Starbucks on Main Street,
Dunkin Donuts on Camden Avenue and the Philly Soft Pretzel
Factory on Main Street. Thank
you to the performers: James
Adams, Max Bixby, Liam Davies,
Natalie Derosa, Kyle Drouin,
Emma Edenbaum, Matt Eng,
Julie Every-Clayton, Emily Fordham, Ben Gromacki, Lauren
Horta, Anais Massland, Lia
Richter, Katrina Roberts, Rebecca
Rovins, Sam Scheibe, Hannah
Snyder, Ariana Sulpizio, Nicole
Tsarouhas, Caroline Voyack, Rebecca Wallace, Gwen Wilkie and
Maddy Yankell.
To say that Moorestown has
some amazing young artists
would be an understatement. The
quality of the performances was
comparable to coffee houses in
the tri-state area.
The Third Floor Caf Live will

How does your garden grow?

Burlington Countys annual Gardening Expo is May 2
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
As the weather is finally starting to warm up for spring, it
seems like the right time to get
your garden started. Whether it is
your first time as a gardener or
your 10th, or if you want to grow
vegetables or perennials, learn
more by attending Burlington
Countys annual Gardening Expo.
The Burlington County Board
of Chosen Freeholders will once
again be joining Rutgers Cooperative Extension and the Burlington
County Master Gardeners to present the 4th annual Gardening
Expo on May 2 from 10 a.m. to 3
p.m. at the countys Community
Agricultural Center located at 500
Centerton Road in Moorestown.
Its always been held in
Moorestown. We thought we

would use the Agricultural Center, because it focuses on gardening and horticultural education,
which is a big part of what the
center brings to the public, Mary
Pat Robbie, director of the department of Resource Conservation,
said. Its really about education
and giving the public the opportunity to learn about gardening and
an array of topics, like vegetables, perennials and roses. Its
hard to go some place to get
some hands-on teaching experiences. This provides
that.
And we also have vendors that are selling
plants, like vegetable plant
starter, if you are interested in planting a vegetable garden, and you can get information about starting a garden and
buy a plant.

The expo will feature educational workshops, access to gardening experts, kids activities,
soil testing, rain barrel making
and plants for sale.
It is an opportunity
to
get out and
learn and see

Special to The Sun

The Moorestown Middle School's seventh-grade girls lacrosse team visited the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field to watch the university's women's lacrosse team compete against Dartmouth College. It was a close game at first, but Penn, with its staunch defense, pulled away for the win. Megan
Kelly, a former Moorestown player and Ivy Defensive Player of the Week, was key to Penn's victory. Kelly
came over after the game to talk with the girls and take pictures, encouraging them to come out for another game soon. After the game, the girls and their parents walked through Penn's beautiful campus,
took more pictures and enjoyed lunch at the New Deck Tavern.

what the county has to offer. A lot
of our vendors are local, and
farm market vendors come out;
its kind of a preview of the market for the season. And we always
try to make it an educational and
fun event.
We work closely with the
Burlington County Master Gardeners program and they do a lot
of the educational programs,
Robbie said.
The County Master Gardeners
will hold workshops during the
day starting at 11 a.m. with
Growing Herbs At Home, followed by Getting Your Garden
Ready at noon and Integrated
Pest Management at 1 p.m.,
which will include a tour of the
Master Gardener demonstration

gardens. Wrapping up the day at 2

p.m. a roundtable panel of gardening experts will discuss topics
requested by the audience.
Throughout the day, visitors
can look for Ask the Expert
signs at certain vendor locations.
These experts are available to respond to questions on a variety of
topics such as caring for your
roses and daylilies, maintenance
of garden tools and attracting pollinators to your backyard.
There will be a special Build
Your Own Rain Barrel workshop
with Mike Haberland from Rutgers Cooperative Extension.
There is a $45 per person fee for
the workshop to cover the cost of
the barrel and supplies, and preregistration is required. To register, call (856) 216-7130 ext. 3.
Local growers will have a large
variety of vegetable and herb
plants as well as flowering perennials, annuals and shrubs for
sale.

Kids can make plant gifts to

bring home to mom just in time
for Mothers Day. Storyteller
Dorothy Stanaitis will be entertaining children on the front lawn
starting at noon.
We have a lot of kids activities, including some make and
take crafts, like potted plants for
Mothers Day. Well also have face
painting and storytelling, Robbie said.
Robbie hopes those who come
to the event become inspired to
start gardening and learn more
about how to be a successful gardener.
For the first 100 interested visitors, the USDA Natural Resource

kids can have a chance to be creative, relax and hang out with
other children in the program, in
a relaxed setting. A lot of restrictions are put on the individuals in
the program on how they can
spend their free time without supervision by CTS staff; any extracurricular needs to be accompanied by a CTS staff member.
The recreation center will still
have supervision, but provides
more of an open and relaxed atmosphere.
We hope to be able to have theater, dance, cooking and basketball. Wed just like to provide
them with a place to relax and
serve as an outlet to get out their
anxieties. A place that will be
theirs with supervision, Hatoff
said.
The location of the recreation
center has yet to be determined as

there are programs as far north

as Chatman and south as
Bridgeton.
We need a place that is pretty
much accessible for all of them,
Hatoff said.
At the gala, things will start
with a wine tasting for VIPs with
a jazz band. Then a video will be
presented by CTS, featuring kids
in the program, treatment home
parents and former kids who
have come through the program,
and what the recreation center
would mean to them, presented
by CBS channel 3 sports director

Gran, an attorney, has represented children and adults with disabilities in 15 states, including
Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Gran has brought a number of

class action and system change

lawsuits designed to improve special education and community
services and secure the right of
persons with disabilities to inclusion and full participation in
schools and communities.
Nocella, a mother motivated by
the unmet medical need of her
daughter, started her own medical equipment company. Today,
At-Home Medical & Orthopedic
Bracing is one of the premier
companies in the area, and Nocella has become a significant philanthropist supporting children
and youth. The recreation center
plans to be named in Nocellas
honor.
Both exude CTS mission that
include children with needs like
these, Hatoff said.
Also, there will be a live and
silent auction featuring items
from a Lagos diamond bracelet
and autographed sports items
and tickets to children packages
for the Philadelphia Zoo and
Please Touch Museum, and
everything in between.
Proceeds from the gala will be
used for the recreation center.
CTS membership in GuideStar
Exchange ensures transparency
in the use of donor dollars. No
amount, donation, sponsorship or
ticket is too small.
Sponsorships and tickets are
still available. The deadline for
sponsorships, to be listed in program, is April 29. Tickets are sold
up until the day before the event,
on May 7. Ticket cost is $250, and
tables of 10 are available for
$2,500.
They can donate any amount
they wish. A minimum for a business card listing is $100, but any
donation that anyone makes will
be acknowledged on a page in our
program, Hatoff said.
For more information on CTS,
to get tickets or be a sponsor, go to
the CTS website www.ctsnj.org or
call Hatoff at (856) 642-9090 ext. 402.
I hope that people know more
about what CTS does and the kids
that we serve; just to let them see
that theyre basically normal
kids, like any other, whove had
some kind of trauma, and that we
are working to get them the same
chances as every other kid has
growing up, Hatoff said.
