Topic : Stress and Anxiety Reductions Due to Writing Diaries, Journals, E-mail and
Weblogs

Proposed Title: Stress and Anxiety Reductions Due to Writing Diaries, Journals, Email and Weblogs of Selected UST Faculty of Pharmacy students AY 2014-2015
Introduction:
(3-5 paragraphs, not more than 1 page)
According to WebMD, Stress is a phenomenon in our bodies that happens if one
cannot handle more of the factors involved. The factors include environmental
factors, situations, and people who are causing the stress. Stress can cause
sicknesses like heart disease, vomiting, headaches, nausea, and other sicknesses
that can strain a person. Stress, in itself, is very much preventable and can be
combatted with anti-stress regimes, such as napping/sleeping, reading good books,
relaxing on the bed, and other methods. One of the methods, which is writing, is
proven to be one of the most effective, yet simplest way to release stress.

Writing a diary and/or a journal is one of the methods of removing stress. It

promotes self-expression and release of emotions and reactions about the event
that happened during the day or on certain time duration. According to Greatist,
writing is also a reflective and meditative activity. It can promote positive selfawareness and creative expression. It can also help in solving ones own problems
and also to fix oneself after an experience. It also increases self-esteem and
confidence. It is already proven in a study that when students start to write their
diary or journal entries days or weeks before they take the exam, they get higher
examination grades. Writing has already helped many people to combat their
stress, and it is done through simple means.

Starting up a diary and/or a journal is simple. One may start by using a notebook
and/or an electronic tablet and record the experiences and feelings about the
situation or event. Then the person can keep it as an open record (a blog, an online
journal/diary, etc) or a closed record (personal diary, tablet diary, etc), as long as it
is recording the experience or situation. The writer can start off simple and can go
through more personal details later on or the person can already write them straight
away. The journal or diary can be written with no pressure, and in time, a person
can develop their grammar skills and writing skills. It is a process when one
improves the skills and the personality. It gives a sense of fulfillment in the end, and
it brings out the best in oneself.

Significance of the Study:

(2-3 paragraphs)
Past researches have shown that writing can be self-therapeutic, contributing
to stress and anxiety reduction. Based also on previous researches, the use of
diaries, journals, emails and weblogs have had positive effects to the writer. This
study will be a significant endeavor in promoting ways of reducing anxiety and
stress, especially those induced by school-related works. By understanding the
levels of stress and anxiety of the students, the researchers will provide
recommendations on how to decrease the tension felt by the respondents.
Moreover, this study will be useful in lessening other problems
experienced by the students. It will elaborate the different media used in expressive
writing which may help the respondents deal with stressors they are not
comfortable sharing with others. This may also serve as a future reference for
researchers on the subject of enhancing immune function and coping with
emotional fallout of certain events.
