STRIKER HELMET-MOUNTED

DISPLAY FOR FAST JETS

24-HOUR
INTEGRATED
DISPLAY HELMET
BAE Systems Striker helmet-mounted
display (HMD) gives fast jet pilots a
revolutionary advantage in combat. The
helmet allows pilots to see enemy aircraft
through the body of the plane and, without
maneuvering the aircraft, lock onto targets
with a look. The lightweight, integrated,
two-part helmet design provides comfort,
protection, and stability, while providing
situational awareness in all weather day
and night. While variants of the Striker
helmet design are in service on Typhoon
and Gripen aircraft in the United Kingdom,
Germany, Italy, Spain, Saudi Arabia, and other
key export markets, the latest version is in
development for a fast jet program in the
United States.
The Striker HMD provides users with critical
"head-up, eyes-out" situational awareness
throughout the mission profile with its
dynamic display of symbology and sensor
imagery, enabling enhanced effectiveness
24-hours a day, in all weather. It features
a binocular, visor-projected, 40-degree
wide field of view with high precision, real
world overlay of flight parameters, sensor
video, and weapon and sensor targeting
information for relaxed vision over extended
periods. The Striker HMD also offers visor
projected night vision through helmet
integrated digital camera technology. The
design has the flexibility to provide night
vision through integration with current
generation night vision goggles (NVG),
while maintaining the capability to display
symbology.

ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS

Customer focused because your mission is our mission

The innovative, two-part Striker helmet was
adapted for pilots of the Eurofighter Typhoon
with input from aircrew and logistic support
engineering. The inner helmet is custom
fitted for maximum stability and comfort
during extended missions and is available
in multiple sizes. The overall weight is no
more than a normal fast jet helmet, and the
center of gravity position has been optimized
through extensive aircrew evaluations,
both in a centrifuge and in flight to give
maximum controllability under the most
dynamic flight conditions. The helmet uses

Features and Benefits

optical head tracking to determine the pilots

head direction with high accuracy and low
latency.

Head impact protection and

penetration protection provide pilot with
uncompromised comfort and safety

The outer helmet is fitted with NVG compatible infrared LEDs, and the cockpit is fitted
with infrared sensors, which measure the
position of the helmet's LEDs to calculate
the position and orientation.

15 mm exit pupil ensures comfortable,

uninterrupted viewing under the most
dynamic flight conditions

The aircraft system takes in data from

onboard sensors such as radar, infrared
search and track, and the defensive aids
system, as well as data from cooperating
aircraft and AWACS received over data
links. This data is correlated, prioritized,
and displayed on the helmet to give the
pilot a full appreciation of the tactical
situation. The BAE Systems Striker helmet
reduces pilot workload, increasing tactical
situational awareness and improving mission
effectiveness.

50 mm eye relief allows use of normal

spectacles and/or laser protection
High-accuracy, low-latency optical head
tracker does not require cockpit mapping
1.9 Kg total head-supported mass in day
configuration to maximize head/neck
safety and comfort
Environmental protection options include
passive noise reduction for pilot comfort
Aircraft interfaces: wide range of aircraft
data bus and video (forward-looking
infrared, or FLIR) options available

As stated by Chris Worning, Eurofighter

Typhoon test pilot, Once youve had this
helmet on, you dont ever want to be
without it.
