During the 1840s British interest in Brunei was increasing. As part of this, the Treaty of Labuan (1846) was signed between the two countries. Labuan came under British control and this had serious effects on Brunei. The USA was also interested in the region and it wanted closer relations with Brunei. After making a Treaty with Sulu in 1842, a treaty was made with Brunei in 1850. 5 Extract B: Further Western Interest. James and Charles Brooke continued to develop their interest in North Borneo. Their activities weakened the empire of Brunei When Sultan Abdul Momin agreed to sign a Treaty with Charles Lee Moses in 1865, it started a series of events which.led to further western involvement in Brunei and. . the formation of the Brfish North Borneo Company. This was also important for the 10 future’of Brunei.
