1. Introduction
The purpose of this task is to studies and identified the criterion of the traditional
malay culture in two different state in Malaysia which is Terengganu and Kelantan. This
study only covers a few part of these two states which is Penarik, Besut, Kuala
Terengganu, Kota Bahru, and
Both states are rich with traditional malay culture either tangible and intangible. We
can see they express their culture through their art motif such as songket, wau,
architecture, and woodcarving. We also can see they still preserve and perform wayang
kulit and mak yong.

3. Criterion A
a) Terengganu

Mak Yong is a malay performing art combining dance, opera, drama and comedy.
Mak Yong is supported by a cast of 16 performers and backed by a traditional
music ensemble consisting of gongs, drums, and rebab. Music and melody add
color to the dance. Their make-up is very distinct especially around the eyes.

b) Kelantan

Pantai Cahaya Bulan


This game is one of the hobby populations in rural areas, especially in Kelantan.
Kite game has become a tradition of the game after the harvest. They play wau
to relieve tired after working in the fields.

Artisans skilled wau has its own way of measuring and weighing when whittle
bamboo wau frame. Tips that would be obtained from the elders, but the actual
ability are gained through experience

Kota Bharu
Muhammadi Masjid is the State Mosque and located in Kota Bharu, Kelantan.

It is the center of learning religious knowledge for Muslim which attracts students
not only from different parts of the country, even archipelago.
Every area of 0.4 hectares and every inch of land is fully utilized with buildings and
basic infrastructure for the needs of more than 10,000 pilgrims from it surrounding
areas.

The three main building blocks Muhammadi Mosque can accommodate up to


5,000 people and the number who attend Friday prayers will be doubled when they
fill each space inside and outside the mosque.

4. Criterion B
a) Terengganu

Alex Lee Yun Ping is a self-made entrepreneur who runs Terengganus largest
tour company, has created his own palace resort at Penarik, based on the classic
house of Terengganu Malay royalty. Inspired by Terengganu rich architectural
heritage, he restoring a collection of traditional malay home century old.

Wan Su is the legendary woodcarver who established Balai Seni Ukir Wan Su
located in Kampung Alur Lintang, Besut, Terengganu. He is gifted woodcarver.

Mek Jah Binti Deris is the Tokoh Primadona Mak Yong, the remaining few
activists of the Mak Yong. Mek Jah comes from a long line of Mak Yong dancers.
Although already 64 years old, Mek Jah is still very active in Mak Yong and has
never turned down invitations to perform in the country and abroad.

b) Kelantan

One of legendary in wayang kulit Kelantan is Dollah the red shirt or his real name
is Abdullah bin Ibrahim (1938 -2005).

The famous Abdullah bin Ibrahim (1938 -2005).

In the Balai Seni Lukis Negara there are 315 puppet and instrument collection
that made by Abdullah bin Ibrahim.

Dollah wayang Kulit performance is from Kota Bharu, but his puppet is influence
by Tumpat puppet design form.

His skilful in playing the shadow puppet make him well know all over the Kelantan.
He creates his own trademark and style in Wayang kulit Kelantan development.

5. Criterion C
a) Terengganu

Terrapuri is conservation and restoration of 200 years houses which rich with
architectural and cultural heritage of Terengganu.
The ordinary architectural thing of Terrapuri (The Land of Palaces) is there is no
single nail is used to build the houses. The beams are fitted together using pasak
(wooden pegs). The walls are made of timber panels slotted into grooves (in the
beams).
The design of the door is short. It makes guests need to bow their head in order to
get into the house to show a respect to the owner of the house.
There are white, red and black cloths placed at the top of house pillars. These are
the bunga haling which have azimat or special writings on them to ward off bad luck.
White cloth representing purity, while red cloth representing the courage of the owner
of the house, and the black cloth representing the bad spirit that go down to the
earth.
At Besut, we discover the woodcarving art. Many of the woodcarvings are found in
houses, old palaces, beams, doorways, windows shutters, and pieces of furniture.
The motif of woodcarving is inspired from flora and fauna, Islamic art and animal
motifs.

a) Wau Bulan

Wau game is one of the traditional games of the Malays since hundreds of years
ago.
The game contains elements of authentic Malay culture. This can be seen in the
form of patterns and designs available on the wau.
It is one of Malaysia's national symbols, some others being the kris and hibiscus.
The reverse side of the fifty-cent coin of Malaysia (1989 series) features an
intricately decorated wau bulan with a hummer on top.
The logo of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) is based on the Wau Kucing (cat kite).
Wau Bulan worth protected because it is significant to our country.

b) Wayang Kulit Kelantan

Traditional Malay theatre arts such as Wayang Kulit Kelantan or Shadow Play
puppet Kelantan in Malaysia has been form of entertainment.
Wayang Kulit Kelantan was known and enjoyed by Malays who lived in rural areas.
Both its dramatic and musical aspects, existing only in the oral tradition, were
transmitted to young performers, generation after generation.
Wayang kulit Kelantan worth protected because shadow puppet has lost it touch
and is slowly fading among the society in Malaysia.

c) Mak Yong Dance

The Mak Yong is a dance drama, a comprehensive theatre performance


combining dance, opera, drama and comedy.
The theatre is believed to have originated from Kelantan several centuries ago as
a popular court entertainment.
Mak Yong dance worth protected because its important for our future to know and
learn the dance that reflect our ancient culture and lifestyle.

c) Terrapuri Village House

Terrapuri (The Land Of Palaces) is a conservation and restoration project of


Terengganu Malay Classic house.
Its feature 29 antique hundred years old Classic Houses. The layout of the resort is
inspired by the 17th century Terengganu Palace and its surrounding.
Terrapuri consists of 20 exclusive restored villas, a gallery and a beach house.
Terrapuri Village House worth protected because it is the only example that show
the Malay architecture style. The architecture shows that how the people in the old
day built the house, well blend together and respect with their surrounding
environment.

c) Wood Carving

The Terengganu woodcarvers are well known and reputed in creating beautiful
works of art made out of high quality hardwood
Besut has produced a lot of wood carving specialists in Malaysia. Their high quality
craftsmanship is sought after by many people in the decorative industry.
Besut has set up the Desa Ukiran Kayu at Tengku Long Palace. Desa Ukiran Kayu
is a vocational institution offering studies and education in woodcarving,
entreprenuership and carpentry. The objective of its formation is to generate
professional woodcarvers who not only produces beautiful masterpieces but also
will be able to present woodcraft as succesful business as well

one of our national significations.

7. Conclusion
As the conclusion, both Kelantan and Terengganu are rich with culture and
traditions. Both states share the same malay culture but slightly different in content.
Their architectural art as we can see in Penarik, Terengganu should be preserve
because of its ordinary architectural. It shows the rich heritage value which 200 years old
malay house that build with no nails. The art of craftsmanship such as wau bulan, songket,
and woodcarving also need to be preserve. Lastly, the performance art such as mak yong
and wayang kulit also should be preserved. These ancient theatres form created by
Malaysias Malay communities combines acting, vocal and instrumental music, gestures and
elaborate costumes.
Lastly, we need to preserve all of these elements in order to saving the layers and
layers of information about their lives and those of their ancestors. Without that, wed erase
the stories of their past, as if the people who came before them never existed.
