What would you do if you were given a second chance to live? Invincible is a Book
story about a teenage girl who survives a terminal cancer diagnosis, only to get Club
trapped in the deadly spiral of drug addiction. Pick!
Evie was diagnosed with terminal cancer and told that by now she’d be dead.
She’s grateful for every extra day that she gets and for the love and support of
her family, friends, and perfect boyfriend, Will–but she knows that soon this
disease will kill her. Until, miraculously, Evie’s diagnosis suddenly changes.
All Evie wanted was her life back, but now that she has it, she feels like there’s
no place for this new Evie. No one around her has any idea how to treat her,
everyone afraid that she might break at any moment. Then Evie meets Marcus.
He’s gorgeous and dangerous and has no idea that she’s supposed to be dead.
Marcus is clearly trouble, but Evie can’t help falling for him–being near him
makes her finally feel daring, invincible, and free. But Evie’s wild joy is due to
come crashing down. The life she’d fought so hard to keep is spiraling out of
control and speeding toward destruction.

1. Why does Evie agree with the doctors to stop treatment for her
cancer? Why are her parents upset? What would you do in Evie’s
situation?
2. How would you describe Stella and Evie’s friendship? What do they
have in common? Do you think their sickness is their only bond?
3. Why do you think Evie has to keep both her “cancer” and her “non-
cancer” worlds separated from each other? What is it that makes her
so afraid and hesitant of mixing them together?
4. Compare and contrast the Whinsett sisters. Do you think that Jenica
and Evie’s relationship is constant throughout the entire book? Did
their roles as sisters change?
5. Why did Stella kidnap Evie? Do you think the surprise was worth
the risk?
6. What does Stella’s hat represent to Evie, both when Stella wears it
and when she wears it herself? Why is it such an important symbol
throughout the book?
7. Do you think Evie’s parents are treating her fairly after her recovery?
What action would you take if you were in her family’s position? Do
you agree with Evie when she says that “no one knows what to do
with [her] now that [she’s] alive” (p. 129)?
8. W  hat do you think Marcus’s role is in Evie’s life? Do you think
that Marcus is a positive or negative influence on Evie? Explain.
9. Evie mentions several times that she wants to quit pain pills, yet
she is unable to do so. Why do you think this is such a struggle for
her? What purpose do drugs and alcohol serve in her life?
10. What does Caleb represent to Evie? Why does she make the
choices she does about their friendship?
11. Dr. Jacobs wants Evie to see a therapist who specializes in PTSD
(post-traumatic stress disorder). Do you think this is an accurate
description of what Evie is going through? What are some signs
that Evie might suffer from this disorder?
12. From your own experiences, do you agree with the idea that
people can change and transform multiple times throughout their
lifetime? In what ways can one do that? Discuss.
13. Do you sympathize with Evie as a character? Can you understand
the motivations that lead to her self-destructive behavior? Why or
why not?
14. There is going to be a sequel to Invincible from Marcus’s point of
view. Based on the ending of this book, what do you think will
happen to Evie and to their relationship?
