My Dear Friends in Christ:

It is a great joy to welcome you to our 1991 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
CONGRESS! This year's theme, "WATERS OF THE EARTH," is drawn
from reflections on the Book of Genesis 9:8-15. Here we are reminded of
God's promise that "the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy,"
rather, "the bow in the sky shall be a sign of the covenant between God and
the earth."
It is appropriate that as we celebrate the lOOth Anniversary of the first
major Social Encyclical, Rerum Novarum of Pope Leo XIII, in which themes
around "water" and "earth" are highlighted. We are called again and again
to have great reverence for the earth and all its peoples.

As teachers of our Catholic Faith and Tradition we are called to renewal

and transformation in all that we are and all that we do: in our reflection
on the life of Jesus Christ, in our preparations for passing on the Faith, and
in our reaching out to all members of our communities.
As we come together for the 1991 Congress, let us respond to God's call to
be at the service of His Kingdom as we seek to build a world of justice,
peace and love.
Asking the Lord's blessings upon you and all your efforts in catechetical
ministry, I am

Dear Friends
It is with great joy that I and the Staff of the Office of Religious Education welcome you

to Congress 1991. Our annual Congress gives us the wondrous opportunity to gather as
Church, and be strengthened and renewed, as we listen to some of the most respected
leaders in the catechetical field.
Our theme 'WATERS OF TI-IE EARTil" is particularly appropriate in a year when we also
celebrate the lOOth Anniversary of the first social encyclical, Rerum Novarum. The earth
and all its people deserve our care, attention, love, justice and peace. As religious
educators, we give witness that it is possible to open our hearts to the transfonning power
of God, and in turn, help transform the earth and make it new. This is our challenge and
responsibility.
So, it is with gratitude that I welcome all of you to these graced days. I hope that the
many workshop opportunities, Liturgical celebrations, music and times for renewing
friendships will be sources of energy and renewal for all of you.

Sincerely,

Sr. Edith Prendergast, R.S.C.

JESUS AND YOUR RELATION TO HIM IN THE
GOSPEL OF JOHN
John's Gospel teaches that, as God's unique Son,
Jesus possesses eternal life from his Father and can
give it to all who encounter and believe in him. The
Gospel works this theology out in lengthy, dramatic

insists that this account of past events is written so

Dear Friends,

"WATERS OF THE EARTH"

Water is such an important part of
being alive. Each day we drink it and
cleanse ourselves in it.
We are
nourished not only by the water we
consume, but also by the water that
surrounds us at the beach, river,
stream, lake, or pool. As essential as
water is, it can go unnoticed and unappreciated until it is
scarce or gone. YOUTH DAY '91 will be an outstanding
celebration of the energy and enthusiasm of youth! This
day we will focus on God's loving promise to us and our
response. Uke the living water God gives to us, God's love
can go unnoticed, but if we drink of this love, our lives
cannot go unchanged. Within this celebration of Youth
Day we will take the time to allow ourselves to be
challenged: If we are connected by the waters of the
earth, how am I responsible for the lives of my brothers and
sisters? How am I taking care of the earth that God has
entrusted to all of us? How do I allow the living water of
God's love to cleanse me and sustain me that I may
become all that God has planned?
It is in this spirit of wonder and challenge that I invite you
to join us for YOUTH DAY '91. It is your participation that
brings this day alive!

Tom East
Director of Youth Ministry

WEARING THE MASK (6A)

Youth and young adults show us who they
are behind the masks that they wear. catechetical ministers need
to look at these masks in order to effectively evangelize youth and
young adults.
Rev. Tom Allender
Fr. Tom entered the seminary at 17 and
was ordained a priest at 30. In addition to
his parish and teaching experience, he
created a plan to bring higher education to
rural areas. His work continued in the
ghettos of Chicago where he created a teen
center for black youth. Today he is the very
backbone of Ufe's Journey.

ANGER AND FORGIVENESS (IA)

Anger, even hate, can easily coexist with
love. Often we have been hurt over a long
period of time by someone we love, even though the pains may
have been unintentional. We may love our husband's big heart,
but hate his put downs. This dynami~ occurs in many of ~>Ur
significant relationships: Parents & Children, Husband & Wife,
Brother & Sister. This session presents a concrete program for
spiritually healing our angers.
LETTING GOD TURN OUR WEAKNESSES INTO
STRENGTHS (68)
We often find ourselves with habit systems that cause grief. We
want to change, but we don't know how. The conditioning that
created these habit systems is deeply Ingrained within u~. Th~re
are moments in our lives when we are overwhelmed with pain;
during these moments, with God's help, we can create new habits.

MONSTER (9A)
Come and experience songs kids and people
of all ages actually like to sing. Find out
that everyone can sing and that instead of
music being a technical monster, it really is
the most powerful natural language God
gave us. Experience the joy of letting the
child-side come ollt through song. Learn techniques that can get
folks participating in music without even using guitars or

keyboards. Experience the kitchen-utensiVkey chain rhythm band.

Bring instruments if you have them with you and be prepared to
sing "Matilda The Gorilla"!

ALTERNATIVE MODELS OF PARISH

CATECHESIS (28)

DON'T 'RECEIVE COMMUNION' IF YOUR FAMILY ISN'T A
COMMUNION (4C)
Perhaps the most revolutionary addition to any catechetical
program would be to turn part of the parish's efforts into systematic
training in marrige enrichment, parenting skills, and blended family
skills. Though apparently secular, it Is among the most spiritual
things that could be done to evangellze the family.

THE CHURCH'S THREE FAVORITE

STORIES r='ROM JOHN'S GOSPEL (4D)
For some 1600 years, the Church has given
a special place in Lent to three dramatic stories of individuals who
encounter Jesus in the Gospel of John: the Samaritan Woman
(chap. 4); the Man Born Blind (chap. 9); Martha and Mary and the
Raising of Lazarus (chap. 11). These are meant as parabolic
examples of coming to faith and being baptized, and living out that
faith amidst adversity. Suggestions for using these in Lent today.

SPIRITUALITY AT THE END OF THE

CENTURY (4L)
This talk will be focused on the need for
individual and personal reform as a response
to the genuine religious seeking of our
contemporaries. People are looking to the Church for some
guidance in their search for transcendent meaning. The message
of the Gospel personally applied and lived is the best and most
effective answer.
SPIRITUALITY AND OUR RESPONSE TO OTHERS (7H)
Individual personal reform cannot be acceptable without a deep
and individual response to the needs of others. This response
cannot merely be on the level of personal involvement but must
also relate to social and communal responsibilities. Examples of
this response are found everywhere in the history of the Church.

THE BALANCING ACT: CONNECTING
WORK AND FAITH (3J), (5F)
Young Adults spend most of their time at work and developing
their own relational lives. This workshop will focus on the world
of work and its implication for pastoral ministers. This workshop
Is for people who dare to come out of their parish cocoons and

Adults spend a significant portion of their lives in the workplace.
What is work doing to people and what are catholics doing in the

HEY CATECHIST! EVERYONE'S

DIFFERENT (2H)
We catechists often forget that those with
whom we share faith have their own
preferred learning style. We need to know
and respect these unique ways of appropriating information and

responding to formation. This workshop will look at the different

ways youth and adults learn and practical ways these learning
styles can be supported in our catechetical sessions.

GOD AND THE MYSTERY OF SUFFERING (4N)

Classical theology argued that God permitted suffering, for various
reasons. The experience of the holocaust and other massive

sufferings of this century have made that

idea highly questionable. Theology today
proposes that God participates in the
suffering of beloved creation. Does God
suffer? and even if so, does this help?
What does the cross have to contribute to
this search for a meaningful God? This
session will explore our idea of God in the
face of the mystery of suffering.
WOMEN AND THE IMAGE OF GOD (SK)
Until recently the theological tradition denied
that women were fully in the image of God
in their own right, but only when seen as men's helpmates.
Affirming women as fully and equally images of God has farreaching consequences for the identity of women, the shape of
human community, and the idea of God who may now be thought
in the image of women. This session will explore our idea of God
in the light of women's dignity as images of God.

RECONCILIATION: WITH WHOM? FOR WHAT? (SS)

The new Rite of Reconciliation has found only modest acceptance.
What is wrong and what can be done? The forming of conscience
is key, but so too is an understanding of forgiveness.

Rev. Timothy O'Connell

An internationally known moral theologian,
Fr. O'Connell is Associate Professor at
Loyola University in Chicago, IL, where he
is also Director of the Institute of Pastoral
Studies. He is the author of six books,

Morality", in a revised edition. Today's
presentation marks O'Connell's third return
to the LA. Religious Education Congress.

SIN AND RECONCILIATION (7Q)

"Catholics have lost their sense of sin. So
they say! Actually, the catholic tradition offers a theology of sin
that is biblical, perennial, and deeply connected to the experience
of people today. This understanding will be retrieved. And its
implications for a liturgical theology of reconciliation will be noted.
This session should provide useful guidelines for religious educators
Involved in preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation as well
as for catholics seeking to develop their own faith.

THE WAYS OF MORAL INSIGHT (9N)

How do we come to understand what Is right and what is wrong?
What is the source for our moral insights? And how can we more
effectively share them with others? The .session will show how
moral knowledge is both objective and deeply personal, how It Is
rooted In the experience of the Individual and the community, and
how It can be shaped and enriched as time goes on. An overall
strategy for religious education In morality will result.

AFRICAN-AMERICAN SPIRITUALITY (4T)

The waters of Atlantic Ocean and the Mississippi have been
blessed by the blood of our African and African-American
Ancestors. African-American Spirituality was born in the suffering
passage of Africans from their Spirit centered universe to their
Biblical centered Christianity. This workshop will discuss the
context and characteristics of Afrtcan-American Spirituality today.
What lmaies of God and understanding of Christ and Christian
living have emerged among a people who are marginalized and
suffering in an affluent Society.

THE MISSION OF THE CHURCH IN A MULTI-CULTURAL,

MULTI-RACIAL, MULTI-CLASS SOCIETY (6T)
This workshop will focus on the role of the religious educator as a
missionary in a racially, culturally and class diverse Church. We
will discuss the mission of Jesus Christ and the Mission of the
Church as continuing that mission. What are bishops, scripture
scholars and theologlans saying about the mission of the Church
In the 21st century.

Joan Ensor Plum

NEW MUSIC FOR GRADE SCHOOL CHILDREN (2Q)
Fr. O'Connor will present music written for 1) thr ,different levels
of children (K-3, 4-6, 7 & higher) and with desire to integrate adult
singers; and 2) show how the music works with these groups.

iNTEGRATJNG CHILDREN AND ADULTS IN SONG (8Q)

Fr. O'Connor will present music for an a plan for integrating adult
and chlldren's choirs. Children's choirs often make cameo
appearances at liturgy - here's a way to make the two kinds of
choir more integral to the celebration.

Joan Ensor Plum, M.Ed. has 21 years of

teaching experience in both Public and
Catholic Schools.

FOCUS ON THE WHOLE CHILD IN EARLY

CHILDHOOD RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
(3Q)

Rev. Kenan Osborne, O.F.M.

Fr. Osborne has been at Franciscan School
of Theology/GTU, Berkeley, CA for 22 years.
He was president of FST for 15 years. He
has authored several books on the
Sacraments.

This session will focus on two major areas:

1) The basic characteristics and needs of young children which
reflect their openness to religious education; and, 2) Effective
teacher qualities and strategies which help facilitate the learning
process for young children.

PRAYER CELEBRATIONS WITH YOUNG CHILDREN (SU)

THE CHURCH: SACRAMENT OF UNITY
(6S)

The church was called a "Sacrament of

Unity" first by St. Cyprian, and in our day by
Vatican II. What does this mean? How is
it Incorporated into Baptism - Eucharist Reconciliation - Ministry?

Prayer celebrations are special occasions for young children to

celebrate God's goodness in prayer and song at their level of
understanding and participation. The preparation and experience
of prayer celebrations provide opportunities for meaningful
interactions with teachers, peers, and parents. These occasions
help build positive relationships which influence the children's self
esteem and their ability to relate to others.

Dr. Ruth Reese

COMMUNICATING WITH JR. HIGH YOUTH (6U)

Dr. Ruth Reese has been a psychotherapist

in private practice for the past 18 years.
She has worked extensively with couples
and families and is currently conducting
research on how people cope with traumatic
experiences.

Parents and Catechists have many questions about how best to

relate to young adolescents. What do Jr. High Youth look for from
parents? How much do adults influence their decisions? How can
we keep communication lines open? This session will examine the
joys and struggles that are working with and being part of families
with young adolescents.

DIVORCE IS NOT THE END OF THE

FAMILY (SW)

ARE WE SINGING THE SAME SONG? (7T)

Over half of today's children will experience

the divorce of their parents and the loss of
living in the family structure of their birth.
For middle class children divorce is often the most traumatic
incident of their childhood, and for poor and disabled children, it
can be one of several major tragedies. In this workshop we will
examine some of the critical challenges of the divorcing process
and how parents and children negotiate these challenges. We will
discuss specific implications for religious educators, such as how
they might respond to children's questions and needs.

MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS: A UNIQUE RELATIONSHIP (7S)

In this workshop we will explore major developmental tasks that
are negotiated between mother and daughter over the life span.
studies In human .development and family therapy have
demonstrated some ~ey crltlcal tasks that need to take place
between mother and daughter so that both may grow to their
fullest psychological and spiritual potential.

Religious Education, Confirmation, Youth Ministry, Catholic High

Schools, may share in the same mission, yet are often seen as
competing partners. This session will provide an opportunity to
examine and discuss the contributions of each of these ministry
settings. The variety in approaches may lead to creative
opportunities or challenging conflicts. Is collaboration necessary?
beneficial? possible?

Bay. Mr. Reichert has taught at all levels arade school through college, and has
authored over 20 Jr. High/Sr. High texts in
religious education, plus several monographs

MORALITY AND JR. HIGH YOUTH: WHAT

AND HOW (2S)
This presentation will describe the strengths and limits of this age
group, and then proceed to apply these to the development of
appropriate content and methods for nurturing moral growth.

PARENTING AND YOUR JR. HIGH YOUTH (ST)

Presentation will identify critical characteristics of the age group
necessary for understanding them. It will offer suggestions to
parents on how to effectively communicate with and guide them
during these challenging years.

through the United States and Canada.

WHEN A RELATIONSHIP ENDS:

GROWING THROUGH THE GRIEVING (lU)
This workshop will deal with the many feelings that accompany the
loss of a significant relationship through death, divorce or failed
friendship. Because we Invest so much of ourselves in a
relationship, the process of healing is lengthy and difficult. Without
the support of good friends and the reassurance of a place in the
Christian community, a person Is less likely to come to a place of
greater life. We are called to be water bearers for each other.

GROWING STRONG AT BROKEN PLACES:

LIFE'S UNHEALED HURTS (4U)

DEALING WITH

Each of us carries' a personal history that has not been pain-free.

sometimes the untlealed hurts from the past are so significant that
they interfere with our present life ... ln this workshop we will
explore the place of pain in human life. We will reflect on some
of the roadblocks to our healin& as well as some of the stepping
stones. Since we do not heal in isolation, we will look upon ways
that we may be as water bearers to one another.

RESTRUCTURING YOUTH MINISTRY

PROGRAMMING FOR THE 90'S (6W)
What are the practical implications of the ever changing national
and global social-cultural forces which impact ministry with youth

today. What are the practical implications of contemporary

developments in theological thought and ministerial development
for ministry with youth? How will youth ministry respond to this
ever changing agenda? This presentation will develop a new style
of youth ministry programming that responds to the changing scene
of the 90's.
DISCIPLESHIP: A WORTHY ADVENTURE FOR YOUTH (9P)
An important part of youth's dissatisfaction with the church stems
from an absence of a spiritually challenging and world-shaping
vision that meets their hunger for the chance to participate in a
worthy adventure. How do we challenge young people to become
disciples of Jesus Christ? How do we present a world-shaping
vision. This presentation will explore the tasks and approaches for
addressing this challenge.
Rev. Theodore Ross
Fr. Ross has done extensive work in the life
and thought of the Modern Church and has
used much of the theology of Cardinal
Newman as a base.
He has lectured
extensively throughout the Western World.

REMEMBERING CARDINAL NEWMAN:

THE PROPHETIC FIGURE OF THE
CONTEMPORARY CHURCH! (2T)
The Religious Education Congress joins the
whole Church in celebrating the centenary of
the death of John Henry Cardinal Newman,
whose life and writing pioneered the movement for the laity, the
development of doctrine, Scripture scholarship, and ecumenism.
MOVE FORWARD TOGETHER (5X)
Why are there so many hurdles and obstacles to lay ministry in
today's Church? This presentation will give a very interesting
explanation as to how and why the clergy dominated Catholic
ministry: the social forces, the expectations, the economics. And
how and why this picture has changed and must change.

GROWING
SPIRITUALLY
THROUGH
CHANGE (3S)
We are constantly being challenged by the
transitions which we experience. Aging,
work, relationships, illness, the death of
loved ones, and many other life events often influence our
relationship with God and how we pray in time of struggle. Joyce
Rupp, author of "Praying Our Goodbyes will offer insights and
Processes to help one grow through the changes which are so
much a part of our lives.
ALL OF LIFE IS A HOLY FESTIVAL (9Q)
In a culture that promotes busyness, it is oftentimes difficult to
recognize the God-moments that permeate our day. Mindfulness
and awareness are key to this experience of connecting with God
In our busyness. Joyce Rupp, author of "Fresh Bread", will explore
ways of experiencing God using our five external senses as well as
our Inner senses.

SELF ESTEEM: THE KEY TO

COLLABORATIVE MINISTRY (7W)
As a Church we are called to be
collaborative. Self-esteem is the key issue in
accomplishing this. We will explore what
self-esteem is and how it develops.
ANGER AND CONFLICT: OBSTACLES TO COLLABORATIVE
MINISTRY (9S)
While most people espouse the concept of collaborative ministry,
it is the inability of many ministers to deal with anger and conflict
which interferes with their ability to be collaborative. We will

TRANSFORMING INITIATIVES FOR

JUSTICE AND PEACEMAKING BY THE
PEOPLE (6X), (SW)
Connecting the tradition since Rerum Novarum and the Sermon on
the Mount not as a guilt trip or unreachable high ideals, but
empowerment that delivers us from vicious cycles into participation
in the grace of specific steps of peace and justice.

THE COLLABORATIVE MIND (2W)

Collaboration is collective genius! Collaboration is an act of shared
creation and/or shared discovery! Collaboration works when you
are more interested in what the answer or solution is rather than
doing it alone. This session defines the structure, characteristics
and disciplines required to experience and work constructively the
collaborative model of ministry. It challenges potential and creates
the desire for better ways to work together for a common purpose.
CONFRONT SOLVE RESOLVE (8X)
Problems and conflicts are the cutting edge that distinguishes
between success and failure. Problems and conflict call forth our
courage and our wisdom and give life its meaning. It is only
because of problems and conflict that we grow mentally and
spiritually. It is through the pain of confronting and resolving
problems that we learn. For this reason wise people learn not to
dread but actually welcome problems and conflict and the pain it
involves. This particular seminar is designed to assist people in
recognizing and understanding the difference between
confrontation, problem solving and conflict resolution.

TijROUGH "SPANISH" EYES: A LOOK AT YOUTH MINISTRY

C3ll>
A total parish 9outh ministry is in tune with the life experiencescelebrations, needs, and concerns of youth. Hispanic youth
celebrate a rich life experience rooted in family, faith, tradition and
God. However, are we responding to their very real needs and
concerns? Who are our Hispanic youth? Our challenge is to
journey together sharing our unique human experiences
(celebrations, needs AND concerns) leading us to a sacramental
experience as a Community In Christ.

SEEKING PERSPECTIVE (2X)

By weaving spirituality and psychology
together in the search for clarity, Dr. Wicks
points out practical ways to deal with the
major enemies of perspective.

Rev. John Walsh, M.M.

He has
lectured in various places on six continents.

MAKING SCRIPTURE COME ALIVE

AVAILABILITY: THE PROBLEM AND THE GIFT

(9W)

Drawing upon his writings on the integration of psychology and

spirituality, Dr. Wicks demonstrates how today's adults can-and
should-be Involved in the pastoral care of themselves so they can
reach out to others without being pulled down int he process.

(3W)

We can no longer "do" scripture in isolation.

It must be done in the context of the Primal
Christian Experiences. These experiences
are the Primal Cry for More (uncovering the
deepest longings of the human heart), the
Primal Religious Experience (necessary for all other religious
experiences), and the Primal cry for help (to have love encounters
with Christ and others.)

MAKING THE SACRAMENTS COME ALIVE

(4X)

The Sacraments must be approached in the context of the fullness

of the good news of God among us (Christ as Liberator and
Encounter-Causer) and the fullness of the good news of Church
(Church as Easter-Pentecost Process). The sacraments then
become love encounters leading to evangelizatlon and justice.

What does It mean to "work with our own Codependency? Let us

get out of the Jargon, and into the real world and work of living and
loving and working with other women and men who are not
perfect! How are we our own worst enemies? How can we
recognize co-dependent behaviors, and how can we learn to be

then explored.

TEACHING CHRISTIAN SEXUALITY DO IT TODAY! (9Y)

Education in Christian sexuality should focus on sexuality as a gift
from God - a gift that is meant to help us experience the goodness
of ourselves, others and all of creation. Am I afraid to teach
Christian sexuality? How should I deal with sexual terminology and
~haviors exhibited by children and adults today?
How do I
answer questions about sex and related issues. This presentation
will help parents and. teachers understand how they can work
together when teaching Christian sexuality.

Dear Catechist,
Just as the parched earth needs water for life, so is our
need as catechists to be refre shed and renewed by life
giving words in a nurturing atmosphere. I hope that this
year's Congress provides that for you.
As you begin to select your workshops, I would like to
remind you that certain sessions are designated for
recertification. This does not necessarily mean it's a better
workshop, only that the content is in accord wit/1 the
requirements for recertification. In choosing your workshops
the criteria for you should be: Which workshop will
contribure to my personal spiritual enrichment and lo the
challenge to grow as a catechist?
May the time you spend at Congress be
a period of growth and fruitfulness as
you continue your ongoing formation.
Sincerely,
Adela Franco

i.QUIEN DICEN USTEDES QUE SOY YO? (952)

o aceptar: ira, tristeza, desilusl6n, rechazo, soledad, etc.
