Dear Friends
It is with great joy that I and the Staff of the Office of Religious Education welcome you
to Congress 1991. Our annual Congress gives us the wondrous opportunity to gather as
Church, and be strengthened and renewed, as we listen to some of the most respected
leaders in the catechetical field.
Our theme 'WATERS OF TI-IE EARTil" is particularly appropriate in a year when we also
celebrate the lOOth Anniversary of the first social encyclical, Rerum Novarum. The earth
and all its people deserve our care, attention, love, justice and peace. As religious
educators, we give witness that it is possible to open our hearts to the transfonning power
of God, and in turn, help transform the earth and make it new. This is our challenge and
responsibility.
So, it is with gratitude that I welcome all of you to these graced days. I hope that the
many workshop opportunities, Liturgical celebrations, music and times for renewing
friendships will be sources of energy and renewal for all of you.
Sincerely,
Once again I am afforded the privilege of being able to extend my personal invitation to you
to join us in experiencing one the finest catechetical events the local Church offers - - the
annual Los Angeles Religious Education Congress!
During the four days of Congress '91, you will be given the opportunity to be enriched in
faith, morality and theology by our outstanding slate of speakers. Your spirit will be refreshed
as you pause to pray at several worship services throughout the days and at the various
Eucharistic Celebrations. The Congress will also be an opportunity to nurture one another by
sharing what and how we believe.
This Guidebook contains all the necessary information to aid you in planning your days with
us. Please feel free to contact me with your special concerns or to order additional books.

OVERVIEW
Youth Day '91 will truly be a celebration of the giftedness of youth! We will kickoff the day featuring music and movement of youth directed
by TOM RATTO. Our opening session will feature JERRY GOEBEL who will combine song and laughter to challenge us in his message about
"WatetS of the Earth".
Following the opening session, participants will attend their morning workshops. After the first round of workshops, Archbishop Roger Mahony
will celebrate mass in the Arena and Bishop Patrick Ziemann will celebrate mass in the Anaheim Room. Both of these liturgies will be
enlivened by the voices and gifts of youth! Participants will attend their afternoon workshops following the lunch break. Our celebration will
then close with exciting rallies! This year, the rally in the Arena will feature the voices of our own Los Angeles area youth. TOM RA TTO will
direct our youth as they sing their songs, dance their dances and speak from their hearts about their experience of God's loving message alive
in their daily lives. In the Anaheim room, a second rally will feature a concert by TOM FRANZAK, a Youth Day favorite whose music has
entertained and challenged youth throughout the countty!

Youth Day '91 features something for everyone. Come and join in the celebration!

VIOLENCE OR PEACE IN MY
HEARTNIOLENCE OR PEACE ON MY

Violence - in the heart or on the Earth takes many forms. Many of these revolve around needing to be in

GRASSROOTS CATHOLICS: A VOICE FOR CHRISTIAN
EVANGELIZATION AND RENEWAL (4P)
Lots of people speak for the church. The media focus on
institutional spoke persons, hierarchical and movement
representatives. The sturdiest of Catholic institutions is the
parishes. What do we have to say to one another about
evangellzation, catechesis, celebration and mission? Why is it
important to others that we network and speak creating a voice
that may be heard.

A total parish 9outh ministry is in tune with the life experiencescelebrations, needs, and concerns of youth. Hispanic youth
celebrate a rich life experience rooted in family, faith, tradition and
God. However, are we responding to their very real needs and
concerns? Who are our Hispanic youth? Our challenge is to
journey together sharing our unique human experiences

experience as a Community In Christ.

Dear Catechist,
Just as the parched earth needs water for life, so is our
need as catechists to be refre shed and renewed by life
giving words in a nurturing atmosphere. I hope that this
year's Congress provides that for you.
As you begin to select your workshops, I would like to
remind you that certain sessions are designated for
recertification. This does not necessarily mean it's a better
workshop, only that the content is in accord wit/1 the
requirements for recertification. In choosing your workshops
the criteria for you should be: Which workshop will
contribure to my personal spiritual enrichment and lo the
challenge to grow as a catechist?
May the time you spend at Congress be
a period of growth and fruitfulness as
you continue your ongoing formation.
Sincerely,
Adela Franco

Estimados Amigos,

ilustraciones ayudaran planificar liturgias Eucarfsticas y otras
