Gene McAvoy Honored

During the Florida Farm Bureau’s Annual Meeting Gene McAvoy was awarded the 2009 
Excellence in Crop Advising Award.  He was presented the award by Mary Hartney and 
she commented that Gene epitomized the way Certified Crop Advisers help build strong 
family farms.  He is the Hendry County Extension Director and has been a multi­county 
extension agent for UF/IFAS for the past twelve years.  We would like to extend our 
congratulations and thanks to Gene for all of the wonderful work he does on behalf of

Congratulations to Marcia Lightsey of Lake 
Wales for being named “Woman of the Year in 
Agriculture” for 2009.  Her family owns several 
central Florida cattle ranches and is known for 
their progressive environmental practices.
 The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has opened 
their new small plant help desk.  The new help desk will provide operators of small and 
very small meat, poultry and processed egg products establishments answer questions 
about agency requirements and will also to provide assistance to state and local food 
regulatory agencies. The help desk will also serve as a one­stop­shop for plant owners 
and operators with questions.  The FSIS staff will assess callers’ requests and provide 
information and guidance materials that best meet their needs.  The help desk can be 
reached Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 877­374­7435.  You can reach 
them via e­ mail at InfoSource@fsis.usda.gov.
