Lesson Plan Outline for Teaching with Technology (Games)

Your Name: Jamie Swain

Academic Subject: Mathematics
Standards: State and/or Common Core
1.OA Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Understand and Apply Properties of Operations and the Relationship Between Addition and
Subtraction
Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract. Examples: If 8+3=11 is
known, then 3+8=11 is also known (Commutative property of Addition)
Subject(s) of the lesson
1. Addition
Turnaround Facts
2. Subtraction

Prerequisite Knowledge: What do they need to know? What will

you have them recall?

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Some strategies taught in previous mini lessons include:

Writing related subtraction facts (when given a picture)
Writing related addition facts ("turnaround" facts)
Relating Addition and Subtraction
Creating Addition and Subtraction stories
Completing a fact family when the numbers are given

Content Describe in a paragraph. You can also add an outline.

In this lesson, students will take from what they learned in the previous fact family lessons and
apply a new strategy. I will make this lesson a little trickier by leaving out one of the parts for
the addition number sentence and have them first complete a missing addend story problem.
Then once they have there addition sentence filled out properly, I will have them finish the fact
family.

List the objectives for this lesson. They should include what the students will learn from your
instruction
1. Students will understand the relationship between addition and subtraction.
2. Students will write a family of facts for situations that show the total and one part.

How will you teach the content? Details help. Include the game(s), what do you do before the
games and how do you follow-up.
Initiation:
As a whole class (at their seat/on the carpet) (15 minutes)
Lesson Development:
1. Draw a domino outline on the smart board and place one counter on one side of it. Write on
the board: 1+__=__
2. Ask, How many dots are missing on the domino? What extra information do you need?
If I tell you the total number of dots, will you be able to figure it out?
3. Tell the children that the domino has 9 dots in all. Have a child fill in the number 9 in the
appropriate space in the addition sentence. (1+__=9)
4. Ask, How many dots are hidden? How do you know?
5. Once you work with the children to find out that 1 plus 8 is 9, then ask What other facts do
we know?
6. Call on volunteers to write the turnaround facts and related subtraction facts. Encourage
them to explain their thinking.
7. Have a student draw the 8 other dots on the domino.
8. Repeat the activity for:
2 dots showing, 8 dots in all
3 dots showing, 10 dots in all
Lesson Development:
As a whole class (on the carpet) (20 minutes)
1. Once the students understand that you can still do a fact family even when you only know one
part of the equation and the total pull up the new fact family house game
2. In this fact family game the only difference is that the students have the dice in different spots.
They know one of the parts is missing and they have the total. They will need to figure out the
missing part and then still complete the fact family.

Closure/Assessment:
Students will return back to their seats
1. After the smart board activity, children will be called to their seats to take out their workbooks
and take out page 232
2. Once their workbook page is completed, they will get with a partner to play the fact family
game with an actual game board and dice.

Additional materials you will use and how will you use them.
1. Smart board
2. Workbook page 232
3. Fact Family board game
4. Dice

Evaluation Strategies
1. Students will be evaluated by how independently they can complete their workbook page and
independently play the fact family game.
2. See attached rubric
