First 2-3 minutes: Introductory activity- Class will sit in circle and discuss the definition of culture.
10 minutes: Message Moment Students will share examples of culture they already know.
5 minutes: I will explain the next activity, split children into groups and give them a small text about a
particular culture.
8 minutes: In their groups the students will take turns reading the text, while the aid (If I have one) checks up
on each group to make sure they are not having problems reading. I will put up a curtain/sheet around me and
arrange chairs into an airplane interior.
5 minutes: The students with go inside the airplane and I will explain that we are going on an adventure and
visit places all over the world.
40 minutes: Students will sing the Airplane song, While I pull up the destination on Google Maps, Street View,
and arrange the area with cultural props. When the song is over I will bring the students out and they will
explore the destination. The students who read the text on the area will present to the class what they have
learned about the culture and I will add on key points if necessary. This will be repeated until each destination
is reached and we return home.
Day 2:
First 10 Minutes: Message Moment activity where students will share experiences they have with their home
culture.
5 Minutes: I will give directions, split class into groups and hand out another text about cultural diversity in
America.
10 Minutes: In their groups they will take turns reading their text. I will be between each of the groups to
check on them and help them with reading.
10 Minutes: Each of the groups will be given a posterboard, craft supplies and images relating to their topic
they will create a poster that explains their topic
20 Minutes: Each of the groups will present their poster to the class, I will add details if necessary.
Pre-Assessment:
When I go to explain things I won't just say This is This I will ask them what something is before I explain it
formally and students will have a chance to explain their knowledge in Message Moment.
Scoring Guidelines:
How I will decide their previous knowledge is just how many kids and which kids answer questions or
share a message.
Post-Assessment:
I will ask questions about what they have learned in class, during the days following until a short multiplechoice quiz.
Scoring Guidelines:
I will have a score for my reflection, but the students will receive a pass/developing grade. Students
with developing will be worked with personally until they pass the quiz.
