GOAL
To determine if there is a connectivity issue and where that issue resides

SOLUTION
DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT SKILLS DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED?: knowledge of Oracle Solaris SAN connectivity
TIME ESTIMATE: 30 minutes
TASK COMPLEXITY: 1
FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS:
PROBLEM OVERVIEW: There is a connectivity issue between the server HBA and the SAN
WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?: System needs to be online until its been determined that
the HBA needs to be replaced
WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE?:
1 - Info needed from Oracle (SAN/Connectivity) TSE
1a - fc hba card slot location and which port on the card (dual port cards only) needs to be tested based on explorer or other command outputs.
1b - confirm based on explorer or other command outputs that the fc hba port is using Oracle FC HBA Driver and is not connected/offline/not seeing storage
1c - confirm based on explorer or other command outputs whether the fc hba card is a Oracle Branded card or not
1d - confirm based on explorer or other command outputs the Oracle FC HBA card part number, so a spare card can be present if needed
2 - Verify FC HBA port has a cable inserted into it
1a - if no cable in fc hba port, issue resolved - that is why fc hba port is not connected/offline/not seeing storage
1b - if there is a cable inserted into port note FC HBA port LED pattern
1c - have customer run fcinfo hba-port and verify port still listed as "Offline"
3 - Perform Loopback Plug Test
3a - properly label cable for easy reconnect
3b - remove cable
3c - insert Loopback Plug
See doc How to Create an FC Loopback Plug From a Standard FC Cable [Video] [ ID 1410085.1], if needed
NOTE #1: If a Loopback Plug can't be easily configured, in the interest of time, the Customer/FSE can do a 'loop together' test which is connecting one HBA FC
port to another using a simple FC cable. If the ports are alive then luxadm -e port reports 'CONNECTED' and fcinfo also reports link online/speed etc. This may
be easier to perform then making a loopback cable.

3d - note any change in FC HBA port LED pattern

3d - note any change in FC HBA port LED pattern

Document 1563045.1

3e - have customer run fcinfo hba-port and check if port still listed as "Offline"
3e.1 - if fcinfo hba-port list port as "Online" then issue is outside the server. Have customer check cabling, FC Switches, and storage. Refer customer to
following docs:
Checking Interconnecting Elements (IEs) in a SAN/Fibre Channel (FC) path (Doc ID 1400156.1)

SAN: Troubleshooting Solaris[TM] 10 (not for Solaris[TM] 8 & 9) Fibre Channel (FC) HBA list in "NOT CONNECTED" status. (Doc ID 1303745.1)]
3e.2 - if fcinfo hba-port still lists port as "Offline", replace the fc hba card, assuming it is a Oracle Branded FC HBA card, then go to step 4
4 - Confirm replacing Oracle FC HBA card resolved issue
4a - insert Loopback Plug
See doc How to Create an FC Loopback Plug From a Standard FC Cable [Video] [ ID 1410085.1], if needed

See NOTE#1 above if FC Loopback Plug is not available

4b - note any change in FC HBA port LED pattern

4c - have customer run fcinfo hba-port and verify now listed as "Online". If still listed as "Offline" engage Oracle (SAN/Connectivity) TSE and provide explorer
NOTE: In some cases the connectivity issues can be related to HBA driver/firmware, consult the doc below for instructions to update driver/firmware (fcode)
Solaris[TM] 10 SPARC (not x86) Oracle Fibre Channel (FC) HBA Driver and Firmware Matrix [ID 1311825.1]
Solaris[TM] 10 x86 (not SPARC) Oracle Fibre Channel (FC) HBA Driver and Firmware Matrix [ID 1311817.1]
Explorer instructions can be found in the doc below:
SAN: How To Collect and Send Explorer Data to Oracle SAN Support

[ID 1273941.1]

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE FIELD ENGINEER/ADMINISTRATOR NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE?: verify the state of the HBA
has returned to "Online" (see step 4c)
