Ballast water treatment system for use in potentially explosive environments

Designed for use in potentially explosive environments, Alfa Lavals compact PureBallast 2.0 EX system effectively neutralizes organisms in ballast water.

Application
The introduction of invasive species via ship ballast water is
one of the four greatest threats to the worlds oceans. To
combat this threat, the International Maritime Organization
(IMO) Convention for the Control and Management of
Ships Ballast Water and Sediments is gradually being
phased in over the coming years. All vessels, including
those carrying volatile cargo and having potentially
explosive areas onboard, will be required to meet more
stringent requirements for ballast water treatment.
According to the IMOs Ballast Water Convention, vessels
must install a ballast water treatment system on board to
prevent the transportation of microscopic organisms, eggs,
cysts and even the planktonic larvae of larger organisms
from their native seas to new environments. If the ballast
water treatment system is located in a potentially explosive
environment, an explosion-proof treatment system must be
installed.

PureBallast 2.0 EX from Alfa Laval

PureBallast 2.0 EX is an explosion-proof version of the
proven chemical-free ballast water treatment system
PureBallast 2.0 from Alfa Laval. Engineered for installation
aboard most types of tankers that carry potentially
flammable or explosive substances, PureBallast 2.0 EX
has Ballast Water Type Approval in accordance with
procedures established in the IMO Ballast Water
Convention.
Certification
PureBallast 2.0 EX is designed for use in zone 1 hazardous
areas in accordance to the IEC 60079 series of standards,
explosion group IIC and temperature class T4 (135 C). It
fulfils the European Directive ATEX 94/9/EC recommended
by the IMO for use in marine applications and on the international market. Alfa Laval also employs quality management
systems according to ISO 9001 and EN 13980.

Features and benefits

Designed with the extensive resources of Alfa Laval and
insights from the shipyards, ship owners and ship
operators that Alfa Laval has worked with all over the
world, PureBallast 2.0 EX features all of the benefits of the
standard system.
System design
PureBallast 2.0 EX has the same system components as
PureBallast 2.0. However, these components have been
specially engineered to meet the requirements of
explosion-proof equipment.
Wallenius AOT
The AOT unit is designed to prevent gas from the
surrounding atmosphere from entering the space inside the
quartz sleeves, thereby creating a barrier against
uncontrolled gas leakage. Should this barrier fail, there is
no risk of fatal failure because the AOT unit is an ATEX
Certified Flameproof Enclosure (Exd). This robust unit is
able to withstand an explosion inside the quartz sleeves
without transmitting energy to the surroundings. Ballast
water also serves as a flame arrestor.
The unit must be filled with water when the lamps are lit.
The elimination of ignition source protects against potential
explosion of gases in ballast water. A ballast water flow rate
of at least 5 m3/h is sufficient to cool the sleeves to a safe
temperature.

A non-return valve ensures the unit is always filled with

water. An extra level indicator and an extra temperature
switch provide redundancy, to ensure safe water level and
temperature.
Lamp drive cabinet
The lamp drive cabinet is designed to prevent explosive
gas from entering the cabinet. Before startup, the cabinet is
purged with instrument air. It is pressurized (2 mbar) with
leakage compensation. Equipped with a sign and a lock,
the cabinet door should not be opened until the cabinet
has cooled to a safe temperature. Should the overpressure
disappear, PureBallast 2.0 EX will automatically shut down.
Control cabinet
The control cabinet must be located in a non-hazardous
area. It is equipped with an extra circuit breaker, which
makes it possible to cut all power to equipment installed in
the hazardous zone.
Filter, CIP unit and ancillary equipment
The filter, Cleaning-In-Place (CIP) unit and ancillary
equipment installed in the hazardous zone, including valve
actuators, flow meter and sensors, are designed to provide
Increased Safety (Exe). Additional measures further
increase safety levels, thus preventing the possibility of
excessive temperatures and the occurrence of sparks or
electric arcs within the enclosure or on exposed parts of
electrical apparatus.

Operating principle
PureBallast 2.0 EX generally operates in the same way as
the standard PureBallast 2.0 system with the following
exceptions:
Before the power is turned on, the lamp drive cabinet

must be purged at system startup with instrument air.

The lamp drive cabinet door should not be opened until

the components inside the cabinet have cooled to a safe

temperature.
If the ballast tanks are equipped with gas detectors,

the detectors can be connected to PureBallast 2.0 EX

for automatic shutdown of the system. PureBallast
2.0 EX is designed to withstand operation where
explosive gas or even flammable liquid is mixed with the
ballast water, but it is good practice not to operate the
system under such conditions.
Installation
Installation of PureBallast 2.0 EX is, to a great extent,
similar to that of the standard PureBallast 2.0 system.
However, the AOT unit, filter, CIP unit and ancillary
equipment are designed for installation in zone 1, explosion
group IIC and temperature class T4 (135 C). The control
cabinet must be installed in a non-hazardous area.
The lamp drive cabinet must have a supply of compressed
instrument air for purging and pressurization. Cooling water
for the cabinet must be supplied in a closed circuit. Piping
must not penetrate the engine room or pump room
bulkhead.
Ballast water from tanks not located in zone 1, such as
after-peak tanks, is not permitted in a zone 1 pump room,
and therefore cannot be treated in the main ballast water
treatment system. Ballast water from these tanks must be
treated by a separate PureBallast system.

entering the unit.

Capacity range
The modular design of PureBallast 2.0 EX accommodates
a wide range of ballast water capacities, from 250 m3/h up
to 3000 m3/h. One Wallenius AOT unit handles a system
flow rate of 250 m3/h. For larger capacities, several AOT
units are installed in parallel. One CIP unit is all that is
needed for a PureBallast 2.0 EX system up to 3000 m3/h.
The size of the filter corresponds to the system flow rate.
