Using GPRS

Introduction

Keeping in mind the nature of MIS activities it is necessary for all provincial MIS staff to remain
connected with central MIS office, thus internet is the best medium of communication between central
MIS office and provincial MIS staff, but unfortunately it seems difficult to arrange standard internet for
our provincial staff in shorter time, thus as interim solution we are providing our provincial staff with
EDGE -GPRS Modems to enable them use their mobile internet to communicate with central MIS.
This document is a short manual which describes how to connect to internet with EDGE-GPRS Modem
using internet from active GSM operators in Afghanistan.

What is EDGE-GPRS Modem:

It is a plug and play USB device with a slot for GSM sim card, a user can connect to internet using
this device and his internet enabled GSM sim card.

How to enable internet services in a sim card?

In order to use EDGE-GPRS Modem to connect a computer to internet, the services should first be
activated for the GSM sim card which will be used with the modem, following describes how to
enable internet for Afghan GSM Operator sim cards.

a. Afghan Wireless
1. Fill your mobile with 1000 AFS credit
2. Using sms send your mobile phone model to 999

3. You will receive a message confirming that your internet will be activated in next 24
hours
4. Within 24 hours you will receive configuration message,
5. Save/install the configuration,
6. Restart your phone
7. Internet is activated in your sim card
b. MTN
1. Send an SMS with text MTN to 667

2. After sometime (6 hours) You will receive a message confirming internet activation in
your sim card
3. You will also receive configuration message
4. Save/Install the configuration
5. Restart your phone

b. Roshan Telecom
1. Send an SMS with the text GPRS ON to 167

2. Retrieve your phone settings by sending your phone model to 167.

3. You will receive a message confirming internet activation in your sim card
4. You will also receive configuration message
5. Save/Install the configuration
6. Restart your phone
c. Etisalat
1. Call 888 for activation of internet in your sim card

Using EDGE-GPRS Modem

a. Installation
1. Insert the sim card in the slot which is available in back side of the device

2. Plug the modem device to your computer

3. Wait for window to appear

4. Select the first option

5. The EDGE-GPRS Modem software installation will start

6. Keeping pressing next button until following window (driver installation) appears

7. Wait until the driver installation is complete

8. Press finish button

9. The software and driver is installed, now you will find following software icon in your
desktop ( you can also find this in start menu > programs > Edge Modem)

b. Creating connection profile

1. Run the EDGE Modem software from desktop or start menu

2. Above is the main screen of EDGE Modem software, wait until the sim card is registered
3. Once the sim card is registered the upper right corner of the window will show ta signal
indicator and name of your GSM operator as shown bellow

4. Now it is time to create your connection profile to do this follow the steps bellow
5. From tools menu select settings

6. Based on your operator fill the required information as shown below

7. Once you filled the required information click the apply button to save the profile

9. And click the traffic button to return to home screen

10. Now from the network connect dropdown box select the profile name which your
created for your sim card

11. After selecting the profile, click the connect button

12. Wait until the connection is established

13. Once connected, a small message will pop up from the right lower corner of the
window confirming the connection

14. You will see the connection progress in graph chart as following

15. Now you are connected start surfing internet
