Objective of Energy Audit Exercise

The objective of Energy Audit is to promote the idea of Energy Conservation in my home.
The purpose of the energy audit is to identify, quantify, describe and prioritize cost saving
measures relating to energy use in the home. The identified energy conservation opportunities
should be analyzed in terms of the costs of implementing the project versus the
benefitsthatcanbegained.
The purpose of an energy audit is to determine how energy is used in an existing facility, and
to quantify it. This helps to identify opportunities to improve the effectiveness with which
energy is used.
Energy audits can be done for all kinds of installations such as industries, utilities,
commercial or office facilities, and homes. This guidance briefly introduces energy audits
relevant to office facilities, which is most relevant for INFM members

ENERGY MANAGEMENT STRATEGY

The energy management

strategy could vary from site
to site. A broad strategy is
depicted in the figure below.

Step 1: Energy
demand reduction or
avoidance

ENERGY DEMAND AVOIDANCE OR REDUCTION

EFFICIENCY IN ENERGY PRODUCTION, DISTRIBUTION AND USAGE

The first priority would be to

ENERGY GENERATION OPTIONS
reduce or avoid demand for
USE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY
energy. For example, the
possibility for designing a
building with optimum level
of daylight, thereby reducing use of electricity for lighting.

Step 2: Energy Efficiency

The next step is to consider how to improve energy efficiency in energy
generation systems (eg, diesel generators) and energy end use systems
(eg, air conditioning system).

Step 3: Energy production options and use of Renewable

Energy
The first 2 steps will help to minimize the energy requirements of the
facility and identify all energy flows in the system. This will be the right
stage to decide on any further changes for the energy supply and
production options. This might include looking at options for:

Increasing or decreasing the size of existing energy production

systems (eg, adding or removing a diesel generator set)

Use of renewable energy

Co-generation

Fuel substitution

Recommendations for Better Energy Efficiency

Recommendations for Better Energy Efficiency

Based on the analysis of the power consumption data, certain steps
have been recommended for improving energy efficiency of the
home. Described below are some important recommendations for
better energy efficiency:
1. Replacing Conventional bulbs with CFL or LED bulbs
2. Replacing Resistance Regulator of Fans by Electronic Regulators:
Most of the room are very old and so are the fans. Fans here have
resistance regulators, saving of 8-10W per fan can be obtained
by replacing resistance regulators by electronic regulators.
3. Geyser is the device with highest consumption. It is the appliance
where maximum power is wasted. Heating water by electricity is
the most inefficient way to heat water. Alternatively, heating
water for bathing can be accomplished by solar water heating
system.
4. Some guidelines for most efficient use of ACs:
Proper

Insulation

must

be

maintained in the air conditioned rooms by keeping all doors

and windows closed properly so as to prevent cool air go out
and hot air come in.
Always keep curtains on windows to prevent direct sunlight
inside the room to avoid heating of cooled air. This reduces AC
load significantly.

Proper maintenance and cleaning of ACs is required at regular

intervals to make it work at highest efficiency. Any dirt in filter
may reduce efficiency of ACs very significantly.
The ACs should be switched on 15 minutes before actual use
and should be switched off before leaving the room.
5. Installation of a master switch outside a room can make it easy
for a person to switch off all the appliances of a room in case
someone forgets to switch off while leaving the room. This can
help improving energy efficiency.

CONCLUSION
The energy audit was useful in identifying energy consumption. The
implementation of energy efficient measures, without compromising
comfort

level

of

occupants,

can

significantly

reduce

energy

consumption in buildings, the energy bills and the correspondent

greenhouse gas emissions. An energy audit is the procedure
undertaken to identify what, when, and how energy is used in a
building and it is the first step to improve the energy efficiency of
buildings

by

identifying

opportunities

to

reduce

energy

consumption. Proper integration of daylight with artificial light will

help in optimizing the energy consumption and thereby reducing the
overall cost. To look for possibilities to reduce energy usage by
incorporating energy efficient lighting system, equipments and
layout changes.
