Week 2

LESSON PREPARATION

Pennsylvania Academic Standard(s) addressed during this lesson:

(Provide Standard number and statement)
2.5.A2.A: Develop a plan to analyze a problem, identify the information needed to solve
the problem, carry out the plan, check whether an answer makes sense, and explain how
the problem was solved in grade appropriate contexts.
Lesson Objective(s)
(Stated in observable and measurable terms)
Students will be able to:
 Apply previously learned algebra techniques in order to understand
exponential growth and how to apply it
 Make real world connections to algebra through problem solving

Assessment Plan
(What will be done to determine if lesson objectives have been met?)
Students will create a poster using Glogster to illustrate an understanding of
exponential growth
Students will submit exit slips on which they will answer various questions
pertaining to the day’s lesson.

Materials:
Computer with internet
YouTube video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjlEJNfsOKc&feature=player_embedded
Glogster.com

Inclusion Techniques for Students with Special Needs:

The teacher will assist students individually during class.

Enrichment Techniques:
Students will apply algebra topics to solve real world problems,
Students will create a poster to illustrate an understanding of exponential growth.

Lesson Differentiation (What modifications/accommodations will be made to ensure that ALL students
have access to and are able to participate in the lesson):
The teacher will move throughout the room to assist students as necessary.
Teacher will be available outside of class to help students as needed.

LESSON PRESENTATION

Introduction/Motivational Activities/Anticipatory Set:

Discuss, as a class, what students know or have heard about exponential growth

Detailed Teaching Sequence:

(Provide sufficient detail that would enable a substitute to effectively present this lesson. Bulleted
statements are preferred)
Discuss, as a class, what students know or have heard about exponential growth,
writing down contributions on the board
Show YouTube video using mousetraps and ping-pong balls to illustrate
exponential growth
Ask students to summarize what they noticed about the mousetraps/ping-pong
balls in the video
Give students real world examples of exponential growth problems, asking
volunteers to solve the problems
 Assist students as needed
Assign students homework: Create a poster using Glogster that illustrates an
understanding of exponential growth based on the video and what was learned in
class. Include minimal text, pictures, and a video different from the one used in
class.
 Due two class periods from day assigned
Require students to submit exit slips on which they will be asked to give an
example of exponential growth.
Guided Practice/Independent Practice/Assessment Activities
Students will create a poster illustrating an understanding of exponential growth
based upon the YouTube video and in class examples on exponential growth

Closure:
Go over what is due for next day’s homework
Require students to submit exit slips on which they will give an example of
exponential growth.
