On March 24 Wheatland County Councillor Brenda

Knight was censured by council and asked to write a formal apology to the communities of Strathmore, Hussar,
Rockyford and Standard.
Council discussed discretions and breaches of councillor code of conduct by Knight, and a motion states that
this conduct has created significant concern for Wheatland
County Council.
In addition to writing the formal apology, Knight has
been directed to adhere to her obligations as a councillor
under the Municipal Government Act (MGA) and Wheatland County code of conduct.
She is not to communicate the countys position on any
matter to third parties, including municipalities, the provincial government or other entities and individuals without
specific authority from council.
She is not to interact or communicate with county staff
without Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) approval, nor
interfere in the administrative functions of the county, negotiations between the county and other third parties, including other municipalities and the federal and provincial
government.
A recorded vote was requested and saw Councillors
Knight, Alice Booth and Don Vander Velde oppose the censure, while Councillors Rex Harwood, Berniece Bland, Ben
Armstrong and Reeve Glenn Koester were in favour.
When contacted Knight said she was unable to comment
on the matter.
While Booth confirmed that anything in camera could
not be discussed, she was able to comment on why she
voted the way she did.
My reason for voting against it was there was no evidence before me for me to censure any councillor, and in
my opinion this is a tactic to muzzle council, said Booth.
Thats my opinion, this is what that kind of conduct is
doing, its not conducive to good leadership.
Recently reports of mayors and councillors being censured have been popping up all over the province, including here in Strathmore.
Its unfortunate stuff like this has to happen, said Koester.
Its something that council doesnt like to do, its not
done very often, and it was councils I would have to
say they didnt come to this decision very lightly or easily.
Koester explained that the discussion being held in camera was typical of a labour discussion. Usually councils go
in camera to discuss labour, land and legal. For legal, negotiations will go in camera and discuss issues with a lawyer;
if youre trying to buy land, you dont want to give your
position out, said Koester, and same with labour issues
with employees, its so people can have a frank discussion
without fear of it being made public.

Campaigning begins
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Wildrose Party Leader Brian Jean was in Strathmore following Premier Jim Prentices election announcement on
April 7. This was the first stop on the campaign tour, and
was done because Strathmore is the heart of Wildrose country, said Jean. The next few weeks will see candidates from
across the board vying for your vote, and the decision on
who to vote for will be a tough one for some.
When asked why constituents in Strathmore-Brooks should
vote Wildrose, Jeans response was that they offer a clear alternative to whats been happening over the last 44 years and
especially the last 10 years. One example is the 59 new taxes
that were brought in late last month.
Thats why they should vote for us because we actually
are making it possible for people to have a different option
than to have an option that isnt a better quality of life, said
Jean.
Thats what its all about, politics is not about social issues, its about making sure people have jobs, making sure
people have a better quality of life, making sure they feel
safe and secure in their homes, thats what its about, and
thats why it is called public service.
On April 9 Jean released the Wildrose budget proposal,
which can be found be found by going to www.wildrose.
ca/standing_up_for_albertans_jean_releases_wildrose_balanced_budget_and_savings_plan.
Its a good plan, and a plan where we will see less hurt,
a lot less hurt than what the Prentice PCs are providing to
Albertans, said Jean.
Wildrose will restore accountability and transparency, they
will clean up the health care system, will restore world-class
education to schools for future generations, protect property
rights appropriately, stand up for the environment and stand
for all things near and dear to Albertans, said Jean. His plan
is to fight for it every step of the way, whether as the govern-

ment or opposition.
We believe opposition is exactly what the PCs need and if
Albertans decide thats the right thing for us to have, to be in
opposition, were honoured to be there for them, and well
make sure we fight for them, said Jean.
Here in Strathmore-Brooks and everywhere in between
Derek Fildebrandt plans to continue campaigning, and said
he will run like Wildrose is 10 votes behind, right up until
the election.
Were not taking anything for granted, but what Im hearing at the doors is people are fed up with PC entitlement,
and they want change and at the very least they want a
strong opposition that can hold the governments feet to the
fire, said Fildebrandt.
People here do not want to give Jim Prentice a blank
cheque to continue the cronyism and entitlement and tax
hikes of the PC government. We need real, fiscal conservatives and theres only one fiscally conservative party in Alberta.
The election will be held on May 5. Head to Page 8 for

I will be playing some new

Last fall she won the ATB

For any service, there will be charges for
professional services, the use of facilities
and equipment, and for a casket or cremation
receptacle. These costs will vary depending
on the type of service you choose. Other costs
include placing obituaries in the newspapers,
flowers, honorariums for the church, clergy,
and musicians, cemetery charges, burial
receptacles, cremation charges, cremation
urns, embalming, viewing and visitation,
slideshows, and funeral service videos.
As well, there may be additional costs for
custom service folders and other merchandise,
though many of these are completely optional.
While some of these items have an assigned
value, for most of them the cost will depend
entirely on what the family decides.

Research is rampant in trying to find new anticancer drugs. They are even looking at an old
over-the counter drug, cimetidine, as a possible
candidate for cancer treatment. The drug has been
around since the early 70s to treat peptic ulcers by
decreasing acid production in the stomach.
Social media is helping people remember to take
their medications. Work is being done on sending
people text messages to remind them to take their
meds. If they dont respond to the message, they
receive a phone call. This was a research study but

to take medications. Now its easy to remind.
April is Cancer Month in Canada. Each year
about 191,000 people are diagnosed with cancer and
almost 40% will die from it. It bears remembering
that about 70% of the deaths are from preventable
factors: smoking, diet, obesity, sedentary lifestyles,
alcohol and sun exposure.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Every vote counts

To the Editor
It is here - the election that few in Alberta wanted.
So now we get to weigh in, deciding if it is time for
change or time to continue with things as they are and
have been for 44 years. Early results indicate that this
time round it might not quite be what the governing
party was anticipating.
The conversations at morning coffee, around the
water cooler, over evening refreshments or wherever
people gather are not going to create change. Kathleen Smith, a Huffington Post contributor says, If you
really want to change things, youve got to do more
than vote. Youve got to get others to vote. That un-

seats governments.
The question is do Albertans really want change
and are they willing to act to accomplish it?
Reasons We Choose Not To Change & Perhaps Why
We Should
Its too radical/extreme
Albertans are after all moderate traditionalists uncomfortable with extremes. Prentice is pummeling
this point hoping to generate an emotion, action or inaction in enough people that the status quo remains.
Its too expensive
Someone recently told me they believed Albertans
are likely to vote for anyone that did not increase their

taxes. The Budget released on March 26 puts a lot of the burden

for offsetting the deficit on the average Albertan, without asking
its corporate citizens to assist.
The Alberta Federation of Labour suggests finance problems
began approximately 20 years ago when the PC government decreased revenues in the following three ways:
Taxes on corporate profits were dropped from 15 per cent to
10 per cent (creating a $2 Billion annual loss)
Progressive income tax was changed to a flat 10 per cent tax
(another $2 Billion annual loss)
Resource revenues were also slashed. In the 80s Albertans
received 35 per cent of Energy sector revenues in the form of
royalties. Today that figure is 10 per cent, the lowest in Alberta
history and significantly lower than other oil producing regions
(an additional $3 Billion annual loss).
Added together this equals a total annual loss of $7 Billion,
which is the same as the current deficit. It appears they are favouring 10 per cent in more ways than one. Maybe it isnt a tax
problem but a revenue problem. CIBC Economics recently reported that Canadian corporate profit margins were at a 27-year
high in the fourth quarter of 2014 and likely to stay there.
Its hopeless
Margaret Mead wisely advised us to Never doubt that a small
group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world;
indeed, its the only thing that ever has.
We cant take the chance
Reluctance to take a chance exists as it brings change, which
is scary and uncomfortable at first; especially, if things have been
the same for a long time. Frequent change increases our ability
to adapt to new situations, new environments and new people,
something consistently occurring in the world today. Why fear?
The sky hasnt fallen in other Western provinces when a different
party is elected.
Weve always done it that way
This is indeed the experience of most native-born Albertans, if
not for their entire life at least for the majority of it. Perhaps it is
time for things to be done differently or not.
Before you vote, know why you are choosing any particular
person or party. Be polite and ask the difficult questions. Become
informed. Encourage others to take part in and enjoy reasoned
discussions. Urge everyone to get involved. It is amazing what
youll learn if you are willing to listen.
Finally exercise your democratic right and vote on May 5.

Bottled water meets and exceeds Health Canada regulations

Lets get the facts straight about bottled water

To the Editor
I read with interest the article written by Justin
Seward that appeared in the April 10, 2015, edition
of the Strathmore Times, entitled, Wheatland County
supports changing water regulations.
In the piece, Mr. Seward quotes Wheatland County
Chief Administrative Officer Alan Parkin as stating
that bottled water has no regulations and you can
put anything in there and sell it. Unfortunately, this
is incorrect.
By law, Health Canada regulations for bottled water must be as strong and protective of public health
as provincial regulations for tap water. Bottled water
is regulated as a packaged food product by Health
Canada through the Food and Drugs Act. Our domestically-produced natural spring waters meet or exceed

To the Editor
Bottled water is highly regulated and safe to drink. As the
national beverage association representing 1,500 workers in Alberta, we were concerned to see the Wheatland County Chief
Administrative Officers quote, which suggested otherwise.
Bottled water is regulated by both Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Members of the Canadian Beverage Association (CBA) must comply with these safety standards
set by Health Canada, adhere to labeling policies related to health
and nutrition, and water produced by members of the CBA meet
or exceed all Canadian requirements.

Water Quality.
Bottled water is used exclusively by the Canadian
military as well as by emergency personnel across
Canada, including ambulance, fire and police services.
Last year, we donated about one million bottles of
water to the Canadian Red Cross to assist Canadians
in crisis during flooding, forest fires, hurricanes and
municipal boil-water advisory emergencies. In Alberta, we came to the aid of the residents of Lethbridge
in 2014 and the citizens of Calgary in 2013.

Changing Canadas military involvement

To the Editor
This is an open letter to the Honourable Kevin Sorenson:
I am writing to advise you and parliament that I do
not support Canadas involvement in the war against
ISIL. Rather than expanding the commitment I would
like to see Canadas military involvement be changed
from active service.
Historically Canada operated and is known globally
as peacemakers. This is our heritage and one that I
am proud to pass on to my grandchildren. It is important that the perception of Canadians and our role as
peacekeepers not be altered by governments current
decisions and actions.
Additionally, financial costs and the potential loss
of lives are too high. Tax dollars need to be spent
at home rather than on a war where we dont be-

long in or cannot sustain. Canadians are more likely

to be killed by a moose than radicals operating in
Syria. Further, funding could be used at home to aid
in building relationships that diminish the possibilities of radicalization. This should be a greater priority.
Id rather my taxes pay for benefits for veterans who
have served Canada valiantly, single parents (primarily women) living below the poverty line, healthcare
and education. Not one cent more on manufactured
wars to redirect the populaces focus away from the
diminishing services we are receiving from the federal government and the increased deficit.
I am proud of my Canadian heritage. This is where
I stand.
Respectfully,
Marcy L. Field

Great news for Alberta

To the Editor
Alberta is the last to join the Have Not Provinces. Why? Albertans will no longer have to pay equalization
payments! The PC Party put Albertans billions of dollars in debt!
Albertans paid $18.9 billion in equalization payments in 2011 (latest stat from Finance Alberta). That is
$5,012 per person or family of four at $20,048. What family couldnt use this money now?!
$19 billion a year would be kept in Alberta if dictator Prentice and his spendaholic government is defeated
in the budget election.

Election 2015
With an election called for May 5, we are asking the candidates questions to help you get to know them better. The
first question is what the major issues facing StrathmoreBrooks and how do you propose to fix them?
One column cannot effectively discuss all the issues facing StrathmoreBrooks. However, in Strathmore and
Wheatland a big issue is our hospital.
The fact that our hospital serves in
the surrounding area, a population of
roughly 35,000 people and is still the
same size as when Strathmore was
3,500. There are only 24 beds in acute
care! The 25 beds in the Continuing
Care Unit have been closed and empty for two years.
The government has promised to use the empty space to
enlarge the emergency room and make room for diagnostic
services. The new continuing care unit promised for the hospital is an example of the value of Progressive Conservative
(PC) government promises. Except when there is an election
on! Mr. Prentice stated there was a shortage of 400 continuing care beds in Alberta, well we all know where 25 empty
continuing care beds are.
There are two things we should do and I will work hard
with fellow constituents to accomplish. The first is long-term.
Strathmore needs an expanded hospital, something better
suited to the population it serves. It should have a larger
emergency room and better diagnostic services. We should
also bring back a continuing care function at the hospital
for those seniors who are medically at risk and require better medical supervision than they currently get. This would

ensure that beds that are currently being taken

up by continuing care patients; who come from
outside facilities or just entering care will not take
up acute care beds. Mr. Prentice stated there was
a shortage of 400 continuing care beds in Alberta.
Well we all know where 25 empty beds are.
The second thing is immediate. By converting
the former continuing care beds into acute care
beds we would effectively double the beds available. Obviously there is a cost to this, but for most
part I believe this would fall under operational
funds and not capital funds. This provides a quick
though temporary solution. However the PC government has created a huge bureaucracy in Alberta Health Services and like the Titanic this ship

doesnt turn very fast. Front line management at

the hospital should be making operational decisions and not a senior bureaucrat in Edmonton.
Finally there is always a threat that our hospital may be turned into an urgent care facility like
what exists in Airdrie. It is important that our
next Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) promotes our hospital development and ensures it
stays a hospital. Thank you.

Einar Davison

Issues facing constituents

in Strathmore-Brooks can
be separated into categories. Ongoing ones such as
the renovation of an existing
vacant wing of the Strathmore District Health Centre,
growing needs for seniors
supports and housing, and
keeping up with an increasing student enrollment are not unique to just our
area.
All of these items require financial support,
which can only come through a careful look at
how money is spent in Alberta so that wise, fiscal
decisions are made to put resources at the essential level. Management and administrative costs
must be properly balanced with what is most critical, that being patient care, services to seniors,
and student learning. Any and all ideas from innovative to old fashioned particularly from front
end staff need to be considered as well as copying what works well in other provinces and countries. My 25 years in education taught me that by
listening and asking questions, creative, sound solutions often could be found within the building.
To be mindful of the many successes within our
systems cannot be understated because we do
have much of which to be proud.
Because we are in the fast four weeks leading
up to the May 5 election, another issue for ratepayers is sorting facts from fiction as presented
by candidates. Good decisions should rely on

facts. Everything you read or hear is not accurate!

It never hurts to do some research. Choosing a
candidate with an understanding of our local area
and its pillars of agriculture, irrigation, energy
resources, tourism, and small business, and who
has lived in our Strathmore-Brooks constituency
would be wise.
The ongoing viability and sustainability of our
small rural communities, as contrasted to others
that grow too rapidly due to location near urban centres, is also something on the minds of
residents. Realizing that our hamlets, villages and
small towns provide needed services to our rural
residents puts all of us together in this struggle to
help keep these communities alive. Raising property taxes to pay for residential services definitely
has its limits. The attraction of a commercial/industrial base is not always successful. On the flip
side is the demand that too rapid of growth puts
on expanding towns like Strathmore and Brooks
for services such as recreation and paved routes.
As a greater community, working together for
what is best for our taxpayers, needs to be the
goal.
Important issues rarely have magical answers.
However, open, honest, and respectful communication along with the desire to reach solutions
for you, the taxpayers whom government serves,
must be the guiding belief.
Molly Douglass
PC Candidate
Strathmore-Brooks
(https://mollydouglass.pcalberta.com)

After 44 years in power, its

time for a government whose
first priority is Albertans. In
Strathmore-Brooks, many issues are unique to us, and
some are shared with other
Albertans.
I believe that there are five
major issues facing Strathmore-Brooks right now: 1)
the economy and taxes, 2) health and long-term
seniors care, 3) education, 4) rural issues, and 5)
accountability from government and politicians.
1) Having already spent the $17 billion Sustainability Fund and now planning a debt of $30 billion, Jim Prentice has left Alberta economically
vulnerable. With depressed oil prices, our local
economy is hurting, badly. When rigs arent drilling, the entire local economy sags.
The last thing that we should do in a recession
is to raise taxes on everyday Albertans. However,
thats exactly what the Jim Prentice budget does,
raising 59 taxes that will cost the average Alberta
household $2,500 every year. Coupled with his
weekly flip-flopping on whether to impose a Provincial Sales Tax (PST), this is very bad news for
the economy and families.
Just as the first rule of medicine is to do no
harm to ones patient, the first rule for government should be to do no harm to the economy.
The Wildroses detailed balanced budget plan
would prioritize spending towards frontline services by cutting waste, excessive management and
corporate welfare subsidies to balance our budget
by 2017.
We will roll back the $2,500 in PC tax hikes, reject a PST, pay down the debt, and save money in

the Heritage Fund once again.

2) For nearly two decades, four successive PC
premiers have promised to fix seniors care in
Strathmore and Brooks, but all weve seen are
photo-ops. The Wildrose will reallocate funding
from lesser priorities to ensure that we get proper
long-term care for our seniors. Now.
3) Alberta once had the best education system
in the English-speaking world. Now, we dont even
have the best in Canada. The Wildrose will refocus
our education curriculum on essentials, and scrap
discovery learning math. Parents will see a simple letter grade on their childrens report card;
teachers in Strathmore-Brooks will see resources
shifted to them instead of Edmonton bureaucrats.
4) For far too long, rural Alberta has taken a
back seat in this government. The Wildrose platform makes rural Alberta one of its top five priorities. We will start by protecting the rights of
property owners, repealing legislation that has
trampled on those rights over the last decade.
5) Finally, the issue that triggered the election
itself: accountability. The Wildrose will ensure that
we do not waste another $28 million by breaking fixed election date laws, and make it illegal
for MLAs to cross the floor without a by-election.
We will also roll back the huge pay increases that
PC MLAs have voted themselves in recent years.
Politicians should never get a raise while raising
peoples taxes.
These are five big priorities for the five big issues facing Strathmore-Brooks. I want to get to
work on them right away.

Shop around
PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
Shopping takes many forms, and also has many
experiences some good, some strange, and some
distasteful. Recently, I was at a famous juice establishment.
I was looking at all the signs on health and nutrition, and was reading one on wheatgrass.
One of my students working there said, you
should really try it, Mr. Fule. Its an acquired taste,
but once you get used to it, its okay, and its awesome for you!
I foolishly said okay, and she whipped up what I
thought was a fairly large taste sample (thats when
I knew I must have done something wrong, and that
this was payback!).
So, I sipped. Now, you should never just sip wheatgrass, just like no one I know, sips Tequila! You throw
it back, and pray it doesnt kill you. Thats what
juiced wheatgrass is like. Pretend youve scraped the
inside of your lawn mower out, made a big, sloppy
clump of it, and then squeezed all that goodness into
a glass. Mmm, mmm, refreshing!
However, it was not good, it was horrible. I wanted
to gag, and for brief seconds, punch that young girl!
I still hadnt finished it all, so I felt I had to throw
down the last bit. It really did taste like I had drunk
somebodys lawn clippings! I turned to Deb, and
gave her a green sludgy smile, praying I wouldnt
hurl!
Speaking of gross, one of my favorite things to
do in the Co-Op is when I see a teacher pal at the
till I like to ask, good-naturedly (I might add), if
hes found the ointment for that bad rash hes had?
Yep, it warms my heart for other shoppers (and him)
to know that I worry about his oily discharge and
that I hope it stops weeping soon! Just seeing his
reaction, is thanks enough for my care and concern!
Karma can be a you know what though. Last fall,
I made the mistake of shopping at the Co-Op with
my son, Brennen and his girlfriend. I sent him off to
get one thing, one thing frozen French fries. At
the till, where a former female student was working, Bren placed the bag of fries down. The cashier
looked at me with a mix of laughter, and probably

disgust! Thats when I saw what was so wrong.

Thats not mine, I dont know where that came
from Brennen, you jerk!
He was nowhere to be seen. There, beneath
the frozen fries was a certain lubricant product! I
scanned all around the area, and saw him laughing
next to Abbey! I think I was able to get out of that
one, but she did mumble, sure, Mr. Fule, sure!
Deb and I were recently on another shopping extravaganza at West Ed. Boy, thats a fun place! You
take shopping, which I hate, and place every possible store in one massive location where you have
to use a map to trek back and forth. Luckily, Deb
let me bail, and camp out at Sherlock Holmes Pub.
Thats where the strange part of shopping entered.
A young couple at the pub asked me if I could
watch their shopping bags while they had a smoke.
I said, Ill guard it like a pit bull.
They laughed, and off they went. The waitress was
confused when she brought drinks, and I explained.
There was an older couple next to me, and the husband piped up, well split the stuff with you!
I laughed and said I couldnt run as fast as before,
and that someone may have to take the fall. Thats
when he pointed at his wife on her cell phone, and
she, not knowing what was going on, gave me the
thumbs up!
After a while, the young couple returned and
thanked me. I replied that I had to fight off this
other couple for your stuff!
The older man said, hey, I was gonna shove her
off the stool we couldve made a clean getaway!
His wife gave me another thumbs up and kept
talking on her phone! Whether youre shopping for
a healthy drink, French Fries, or worst of all, clothes,
shopping can definitely be an adventure. Somehow
there are ways to make it more fun and you can meet
some really cool people (maybe not my son, but
others!). Oh, and dont forget to try the wheatgrass
shooters! Weve got to recycle those lawn clippings!
(Fule for Thought is a slice of life humourous column that appears in the Strathmore Times, written
by long-time resident, town councillor, high school
teacher, coach, husband and father of two Pat Fule.

de Graaf plays the banjolele (a combination of banjo and ukulele), and Hamm plays guitar and mandolin. After Cowman
won a recording scholarship with Rosebuds doGhouse Studios, the three recorded together. They hadnt intended to continue, but enjoyed working together so much they just didnt
stop. Their self-titled album was released in October 2014.
Cowman learned about the Searchlight competition by
fluke, she says, and decided it was a perfect opportunity to
help The Dearhearts achieve their goal of reaching a wider audience with their music and broaden exposure to their album.
Its certainly working their Facebook page gained more than
40 new likes within the first week, and their music was featured on both CBC Saskatchewans The Afternoon Edition and
CJLO Montreals The Best of the West.
The Searchlight is at the end of the regional competition
phase, when Canadian music fans could vote online for the
Dearhearts or a total of 10 entrants daily. The voting officially ends at 1 p.m. - on April 20. On April 21 the finalists
will be revealed, and will only be one step away from making
it into the national round.
If The Dearhearts are one of the Top 10 groups in their
region, based on online voting, theyll be entered into the
second phase, the national contest. National winners will be
chosen by a panel of judges, with online voting as one of the
judging criteria.
You can listen to the Dearhearts Searchlight entry, July,
at http://music.cbc.ca/#!/artists/The-Dearhearts. Follow their
competition progress and their other activities by liking their
Facebook page.
In the meantime, The Dearhearts who just returned from
a month-long tour of house concerts in Alberta and Saskatchewan -- will continue singing for audiences around the province. This spring, Cowman and de Graaf will sing and act together in the play Wildwood Fire, on Rosebuds BMO Studio
Stage. In July, The Dearhearts will perform at the Alberta 55+
Games in Strathmore.

particularly stands out in the key role of the mischievous Puck.
Watching RSA student productions gives me the
delight of seeing students grow in confidence and
skill, and of observing that theyre taught well. For
most of these students, Midsummer Nights Dream
is only their second Rosebud performance, but this
doesnt feel like an amateur production. Beginning
with the musical prelude from Vivaldis Four Seasons, through the costumes, set, choreography,
props, Barrys original fairy music, and the closing
nonsensical play-within-a-play, it is a quality show.
Children and adults who are avid Shakespeare

The Screaming Eagle, a one-of-a-kind
car created by Jack Holt, is selling unreserved this weekend through Wheatland Auctions. The vehicle is perfect for
the collector of the unique.
The Screaming Eagle was a project
of his and its quite the unique piece,
said Cody Hayes, co-owner of Wheatland Auctions.
The vehicle features quarter-inch
armour plated steel; the front axle is

out of a coach bus, the rear axle from

a freightliner truck. It weighs around
18,000 pounds and gets a stunning eight
miles a gallon, approximately. It has a
hydraulic hatch for the engine compartment, and rear sleeping quarters.
Its a one-of-a-kind piece, theres no
other Screaming Eagle in the world, so
thats cool, said Hayes.
Holt, a Red Deer man who created
Holt Tree Spade, had been contracted
by a stuntman to make the vehicle in
99. The stuntman had wanted a bulletproof car that he would be able to drive

through just about anything. After Holt

designed the vehicle, did the engineering and looked into parts and supplies,
the stuntman wasnt able to come up
with the money to build it. And so, a
few years later, Holt decided to build
it himself. Before selling, Holt had the
Screaming Eagle appraised at $166,000.
Since that time the buyer has put additional money into it, and now in his
70s has decided to get rid of a few of
his toys.
Another one of the toys the consigner
is looking to re-home is a Port City Race
Car built for NASCAR racing. Its an ASA
regulation race car - ASA is a division
of NASCAR - has a $25,000 engine in
it right now, which is currently set at
600HP and could go up to 2,000 HP.
If a person wants to start racing all
they would need to do is buy that outfit, said Hayes.
The cars arent the only things that
will be for sale at the Cheadle location
this Saturday.
The fun thing about the consignment
sale is it literally has something for everyone, we have log cabins we have
trees, we have tools, we have antiques,
theres big construction equipment,
theres farm equipment, theres skid
steer attachments, horse shelters and
tack, theres quite a variety, said Hayes.
The spring sale is generally the largest of the year for Wheatland Auctions,
and Hayes anticipates 3,500 people to
be there the day of. The action begins
at 10 a.m.

Remembering Vimy
ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Reporter

The Battle of Vimy Ridge is a name
that should strike pride in a Canadians
heart as it is considered by many to
be the defining moment for Canada
and our military. This is moment during World War 1 when Canada showed
their military strenght.
Vimy Ridge is a seven-kilometre
ridge in France that the Germans held.
This gave the German forces a distinct
advantage as they had the high ground
and were able to see the Allied forces
sneaking up to try to take the ridge.
The Canadian Corps were ordered to

take the ridge, and so along with the

English forces they used their artillery
to shell the ridge which killed many of
the Germans. On April 9, the Canadians attacked. The battle ended as the
Canadians took the ridge on April 12.
Around 3,598 Canadian soldiers were
killed and 7,000 wounded.
The reason why this was considered such an achievement for the Canadian military is because for the first
time Canadian soldiers came together
to work together and were victorious where the other allies were not.
Brigadier-General A.E. Ross said about
that battle in those few minutes I witnessed the birth of a nation.

Members of the Strathmore Legion gathered together to remember

COME AND REST

Ever get tired? Ever feel a need
for rest? We are a weary people
because we rush from one activity
to the other. We work long hours
and fill our calendars with too
many obligations. The fact that
we need rest makes the invitation
from Jesus in Matthew 11:28 so
very appealing. While people
run here and there trying to find
peace, Jesus says, so simply and
so calmly, Come to Me, all you
who labor and are heavy laden,
and I will give you rest.
Many are troubled and agitated
today, and they try to find rest in all
the wrong places. Some look to a
mate, a bottle, a pill, friends, pleasure, entertainment, job, or money.
People look everywhere and try
everything in the effort to find rest.
But no thing and no one in this
world can give you the peace and
rest you seek.
The exhortation of Christ is to
come to him! Nowhere else can
we have our needs met like we
can with Jesus! The invitation that
Jesus is giving here to us is a call
to salvation. This invitation is the
essence of salvation. Salvation is
coming to Jesus! It is not coming
to a church, a set of doctrines,
a person, a denomination, or a

new way of living. While God

uses churches, people, and a set
of doctrines, Christianity is an
intimate and personal relationship
with Jesus.
The invitation of Jesus is all-inclusive. He does not invite just some
people; He invites all. Jesus invites
all those laden with financial
burdens; all those laden with
physical burdens; all those laden
with emotional burdens; all those
laden with sorrow and grief; all
those laden with spiritual burdens;
all those laden with the guilt of sin.
Jesus says in John 6:37: All that
the Father gives me will come to
Me, and the one who comes to Me
I will by no means cast out.
The invitation to come has a
reward with it. By coming we
receive all the Jesus offers. By
coming to Jesus we receive his
perfect rest.
There is an old phrase that says,
No rest for the weary. But Jesus
said that there is rest for the weary
if you would come to Him! So
Jesus is inviting you today to come
to Him and rest. Are you going to
accept his invitation?

Grads recognized
for passion, success
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

On April 2 three Strathmore High School (SHS)
graduates were inducted a Pillars of Strathmore
High School. This is the second group of alumni
to have their faces adorn the walls of the school in
what has become an annual event for the school.
The Pillars of Strathmore was created through
a trust from former SHS student Steve Rodehutskors family.
Steve was honoured here in 2010, he was the
first Pillar of Strathmore High School. Steve was
a successful player in the CFL and would go on
to become a successful veterinarian as well. Steve
unfortunately lost his battle to cancer in 2007,
said SHS Associate Principal Kyle Larson.
Rodehutskors represented many of the qualities
that as a school the staff felt were important to
recognize. The people inducted represent many
aspects of the community, from the sports world,
to medicine and trades, and have gone on to become successful in their chosen paths.
Our vision of this program, we decided we
wanted to honour graduates who have excelled in
various (areas), said Larson.
Norman Taylor, Ben Josephson, and Kenny
Kaechele were the inductees this year. Taylor, who
graduated in 1991, works at Massachusetts General Hospital where his current research is discovering the neural mechanisms responsible for
producing the five general states of anesthesia.
Specifically, he and his team are developing a novel drug therapy that could be the first to actively
wake someone from general anesthesia.
Taylor had moved to Strathmore with one year
to go before grad, and in that time made a lasting
impression with the school.
In the short time they (the students) had to
get to know him he made a significant impact on
them, he became extremely well-liked and a respected member of the class of 1991, so much so
that he was elected class valedictorian, said SHS
teacher Karen Harris.
Taylor said it was the teachers and the staff who
instilled a culture of success, while providing the
skills that students needed that helped lead him to
where he is today.
When you come out of here you can do anything you want to do, so I guess in some ways

Ben Josephson (l-r), Kenny Kaechele and Norman Taylor

were inducted as Pillars of Strathmore High School on April
2.

Shannon LeClair Photo

I would like to deflect back to all of you to say

thank you for being a part of my life, said Taylor.
Ben Josephson is a graduate of the class of 97.
SHS volleyball coach Randy Moncks recalled when
he first heard about the new family to Strathmore,
and how the students were in to sports, mainly
basketball. Moncks said he wasnt overly excited
about the news, and his focus originally was on a
few students who had come back to play that year.
In the middle of the season things changed, with
one of the setters leaving, and Josephson took that
place. While playing volleyball was far from his
first choice, it led him to the career he has today.
He joined the Trinity Western University (TWU)
Spartans and in his final year was named a Canada
West First Team All-Star and earned Trinitys first
ever CIS All-Canadian award.
Following his achievements as a volleyball player, Josephson became a coach for TWU in Langley,
BC. Since 2007 he has been a head coach with
them, guiding them to five CIS national championships.
Ben as one of your former coaches I am also
very proud of your accomplishments and its an
honour to have you back in our school. Once a
Spartan, always a Spartan, said Moncks at the ceremony.

Rockyford ladies in red

MANNY EVERETT
Times Contributor

The Rockyford Ladies will be holding their fifth
annual Gala Night on Saturday, May 9.
Five years ago a dozen ladies in Rockyford got
together and decided that the ladies in the area
could use a night of fun and laughter, and if they
could raise money for the community while doing
it, it would be even better.
Hence the Rockyford Ladies Gala was born.
The response was so wonderful that this year
will be our fifth gala, says Laurie Phillips, one of
the original dozen.
Over the years the group has changed as people
have moved away and new members are found,

and every year the group keeps growing.

The generosity of their sponsors continues to be
positive as the hall is donated, silent auction items
are donated, door prizes are donated and the time
from community members to set up, bartend and
cleanup are generously donated to the cause.
The theme this year for the group is Ladies in
Red. The entertainment for the evening will be
The Travelling Mabels. The $50 tickets go on sale
April 10 and can be purchased by emailing Laurie Phillips at phillips255a@gmail.com or phoning
403-533-2415. All proceeds are used to support local causes.
Phillips says, over the last four years the group
have donated approximately $65,000 back into
the community.

Strathmore High School honours

past students
Continued from Page 14

Going through this process of reflection on
this honour has only solidified how much teachers and coaches like Randy Moncks meant to
my development as a youth and many of those
lessons and experience continue to mould and
shape me today, said Josephson. Im excited
to see this Pillars of SHS program continue to
develop and celebrate the many success stories
that have graduated from our school and represent our city well in the communities around the
country. Im deeply honoured and humbled to be
considered with these peers and Pillars.
Principal Gary Reagan took to the podium last
stating that it has been passion, which has led to
the success of each of the three inductees, and
brought them to be Pillars of Strathmore.
Every single one had this incredible passion
for what they were doing, said Reagan.
He said one of the great things about high
school is students become more focused, they
find something that interests them and thats what
drives them. They become engaged and often that
sparks a passion that takes them past high school.
He said that was not the case with Kenny Kaechele, who graduated in 1994.
Ken found his passion after leaving high
school, and what a passion it was, said Reagan.
Reagan said Kaechele was chosen not only for
his success but also because the career path he
chose is a trade that he turned it into the epitomy
of success.
Kaechele developed a love and passion for food
and cooking while working at the Little Village
Caf here in town. He began formal training at

It really was special because I have achieved
my success the hard way. I struggled with addictions and being a young single father in the
years following high school, but was able to make
changes and really turn my life around, said
Kaechele.
I have now been clean and sober for over 12
years and the support and mentoring I received
from my SHS teachers was felt years after graduating. I now have the unique opportunity to help
other young people who are struggling with addictions and my career as a chef has always included this.
My legacy is an ongoing one; my struggles
have been turned into assets and my career is a
testament to the success one can have when they
discover their truest self and turn struggle into
success.
Each year three students will be recognized
during an induction ceremony in the spring. The
deadline for nominations will be the end of September each year, and then the plan is to host an
induction ceremony each year. Anyone is interested in nominating somebody can do so by contacting Strathmore High School, 403-934-3135, or
by contacting Kyle Larson at the school.

Did You Know?

It is likely that the Roman Goddess of Love Aprilis was honoured when
naming the month of April, but historians arent totally sure of that factoid.
April 1st was used to celebrate the birth of Christ up until 350 when pope
Julius I declared that Christs birth would be celebrated on December 25.
April is international Guitar month, National month for poetry, Mathematics
Awareness and Sexual Assault Awareness.

According to data from TrueCar.com, in 2012 the

average new car cost $30,500. Thats a considerable
expense, especially at a time when fuel costs remain
high and cost of living continues to rise.
Because new cars have become so expensive, more
and more vehicle owners are looking for ways to extend
the life of their vehicles. The longer a car can stay on
the road, the better an investment that vehicle becomes.
Fortunately, there are several steps vehicle owners can
take that should ensure their vehicles stay on the road
for years to come.
* Scale back on short trips. The toll
cold starts take on a vehicle can add
up over time. When a car is started,
condensation builds up in the vehicles
exhaust system. On longer trips, that
condensation will gradually evaporate.
However, on short trips, that condensation often does not have enough
time to evaporate, and over time too
many short trips will lead to an accumulation of water in the muffler that
can lead to rust and rust holes on the
muffler. Short trips also can negatively
affect gas mileage. When possible,
leave your car at home on trips into
town when you can just as easily
walk or ride a bicycle. Over time,
reducing the amount of short trips you take in your car
will greatly reduce wear and tear on your vehicle and
improve your fuel efficiency as well.
* Stick to the manufacturers recommended maintenance schedule. Adhering to your vehicles maintenance
schedule serves many purposes, including improving
the its durability and protecting various components,
including its cooling system and drivetrain. While many
manufacturers used to recommend changing a vehicles
oil every 3,000 miles, many of todays newer automobiles need their oil changed less frequently. Check your
owners manual for manufacturer recommendations
regarding oil changes, and dont forget to replace the oil
filter when changing your vehicles oil.
* Pay attention to brake pads. Brake pads that are
allowed to wear down can cause damage to the brakes

rotors and calipers. That damage can prove costly and

make things harder on your vehicle. Keep an eye on
your vehicles brake pads, which are far less expensive
to replace than rotors and calipers, and do not allow
them to wear down to metal.
* Keep your tires properly inflated. Tires that are
under-inflated will negatively impact your vehicles
fuel efficiency. In addition, the tires life expectancy is
reduced considerably when tires are not properly inflated. Routinely check your tire pressure, especially if
you drive a lot, and keep tires inflated
at the pressure recommended in your
vehicles owners manual.
* Be mindful when filling up your
tank. Many people do not pay much
attention to their surroundings when
pulling into the filling station. But
when you fill up can impact your cars
life expectancy. Perhaps the worst
time to fill your tank is when the fuel
tanker is in the gas station refilling the
underground tanks. Thats because
the process of filling the underground
tanks can stir up sediment that had
settled at the bottom of those tanks. If
that sediment finds its way into your
vehicles gas tank, it can clog filters
and fuel injectors and negatively affect
the vehicles performance. So unless your car is running
on empty, avoid refilling its gas tank when the tanker is
still in the station.
* Take care of your vehicles interior, too. Caring for
a car is not just about being good to whats under the
hood. Caring for the cars interior will not necessarily
impact its performance, but a well-kept interior will
improve how you look at your vehicle and how much
you enjoy driving it. The longer you enjoy driving your
vehicle, the longer you are likely to keep it. Preserve
the vehicles door and window seals; clean the dashboard, including the gauges, vacuum the floor mats; and
wipe down the vehicles interior, whether its cloth or
leather. Keeping up the appearance of the cars interior will make the vehicle more enjoyable to drive and
increase its value at resale.

Advice from
the Pros:
Do Not Neglect
Auto Service
The average age of a personal vehicle on the
road today is more than 11 years, according to
recent news reports. In tough economic times,
its natural to rein in spending. Small issues
can morph into more expensive repairs. For
example, failure to replace worn brake pads or
a faulty oxygen sensor -- both relatively easy
services for qualified auto technicians -- can
result in expensive brake rotor service or costly
replacement of the vehicles catalytic converter.
Frequently neglected items include oil
changes, tire and brake service, wheel
alignment, air and fuel filters, and transmission
service.
Besides, a well-maintained vehicle gets
better gasoline mileage, pollutes less, is safer
to operate, and lasts longer than one thats
neglected.
* Look for a neat, well-organized facility,
with vehicles in the parking lot equal in value to
your own and modern equipment in the service
bays.
* Look for a courteous staff, with a service
consultant willing to answer all of your
questions.
* Look for policies regarding estimated
repair costs, diagnostic fees, guarantees, and
acceptable methods of payment.
* Ask if the repair facility specializes or if it
usually handles your type of repair work.
* Look for signs of professionalism in
the customer service area, such as civic,
community, or customer service awards.
* Look for evidence of qualified technicians:
trade school diplomas, certificates of advanced
course work.

Taking care of your vehicle by getting regular maintenance and inspections done can save you a lot of
money in the long run.
If regular maintenance is done to a vehicle, it
avoids the diagnosis later on of a check engine light.
A lot of customers allow their vehicle to keep going,
and they drive and drive and drive, said Canadian
Tire Service Manager Mike Carter.
Automotive is never a small charge but smaller
increment charges avoid big bills later on.
A transmission service today at for $130- $160 at
160,000km could save you a transmission rebuild in
the amount of $3,000-$4,000 at 220,000km.
One thing we dont do at Canadian Tire here
is pressure sales. One time visits are not the way
of the automotive world, it needs to be a life time
relationship, said Carter.
If its a general maintenance were going to give
you a green light today and were going to tell you at
your next stop you may be hitting a red light.
Its more of a maintenance program that I set up for
everyone, because an average person when they
come in for an oil change, they dont expect to walk
out with a $2,000 bill, or even a $500 bill.
Most people dont have that money sitting in their
bank account, but if he tells people some of the
things that could be coming up, it will give them a
chance to plan and prepare for their next visit.
Some of the ways you can a save yourself a big bill
later on is by getting regular oil changes, keep an
eye on wear on your tires, make sure the cooling
and heating reservoirs are filled, check your lights,
horn, and windshield wipers.
When you come to Canadian Tire and get a general
oil change, the staff do a 60 point inspection which
is included in the oil change. They also do a road
ready inspection.
What people dont understand about a lot of
vehicles though is theres other maintenance items
that need to be done, transmission services, spark

plugs, said Carter.

On average most spark plugs last between 100,000
to 150,000km. If they arent changed at that interval
then later on you could get a misfire, and now have
to pay for diagnosis. Most times, said Carter, its a
general maintenance item that could have been
avoided.
Anyone who has a vehicle can go online and look
up the recommended general maintenance plan for
their vehicle. It doesnt need to be followed 100 per
cent, but if its in the shop roughly around when it
should be, or you ask the questions at the point of
an oil change, you may get answers that can save
you later.
Another important piece of advice for vehicle owners, you do not ever have to have all your work
done by a dealership in order to claim warranty. You
need proof you have done the services they recommended, said Carter.
Mike Carter has been the Service Manager at
Canadian Tire for three years. He has two great
mechanics, both with over 15 years experience each
and the lube, oil and tire tech has over four years
experience.
Geordee Campbell is a master Dodge technician by

Strathmore football
unveils new name
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Community Football

Association unveiled their new name as
the Badgers beginning this fall.
After a couple of months of debating,
the board decided that the name would
fit best the team identities.
What happened is the high school
informed us that they were going to
start their own senior football team and
we could not carry the name Spartans
anymore, said Brad Middlemiss, head
coach of the associations senior team.
Weve been talking for quite awhile
about changing that name because a lot
of people got confused about that we
were a high school football team and
we never were.
Coming up with a new name was
quite challenging, all the good names
are taken by other sports teams. We
tried to come up with Lightning or
Thunder or something like that but we
find out there is a girls softball team
after you search it out.
The name Badgers was settled on because of the resemblance to the Strathmore area.
We ended up with the Badgers because there are a lot of them around the
Strathmore area, so we wanted something that would belong to the town,
Serving

said Middlemiss.
The community football association
owns all the equipment and will possibly have the badger claw emblem put
on the helmets in time for next season.
We own all the equipment and the
stuff on the field plus the sheds where
the equipment was locked in as well,
so its been a bit of a battle, said Middlemiss. The logo that you see on our
Facebook page, thats going to be the
logo that s going to be embroidered
into our clothing and then were talking about some claws that are clawing
through fabric on the sides of the helmets.

Longtime Wheatland Athletic Association coach Devin Olson (l-r) was presented with a framed jersey from President
Murray Brown for his commitment to the organization for 10
seasons. Olson had coached at all three levels and won three
league championships with the Wheatland Chiefs.

Coach Dev-O
goes out on top
JUSTIN SEWARD

Times Reporter

Devin Olsons tenure with the Wheatland Athletic Association has come to a close, as he is retiring after 10 seasons of coaching with all three
levels in organization.
After amassing a 378-161-37 record in 576
games, and winning three out of the last five
league titles with the midget double-A Chiefs, he
felt it was time to move on from the game he so
dearly loved and focus on family and work.
He began his coaching career with the peewee
Braves and worked his way up from there.
When I first started coaching, they asked me if
I wanted to coach and Ive never coached before.
They didnt have anyone else so I was like yeah
sure and kind of got thrown into it right off the
bat, said Olson.
Olson recalls that first year being such a great
experience, working with a limited number of
players that went on to enjoy successful careers.
The first year was a good learning one, we
only had 26 kids try out for our team and we
didnt have a very good team that first year but
when you look back on it, I think there was all
but three kids on that team played junior A or
WHL, said Olson.

His coaching career took a turn for the best after

that season as he brought the program back into a
winning brand of hockey.
The problem was the coaches that they had
in there before from Calgary and I guess they
wrecked it. They made it where nobody wanted to
come try out, they always had good numbers up
until that year, said Olson.
After that we started getting the numbers and
the team back. Once you field good numbers, you
usually get a pretty good team from this area.
What made it appealing year after year to come
back was the great people that he was fortunate
enough to be around with his teams.
Ive always had a good group of kids and parents that made it fun. They werent on us (and)
didnt make it so you didnt want to coach, said
Olson.
What made his life behind the bench easier was
that he developed and moved up each level with
the some of same players and coaches.
I coached two years of peewee, one year of
bantam and after that midget. There were families
like the Wittenburgs, I coached their kids for eight
out of the 10 years, said Olson.
Just knowing the kids all the way up through
helped and you knew what kind of group you
had. Once you got to midget, the kids were closer
in age, its faster hockey and what youre used to.
His coaching style could be best summed as being calm, and he wanted to make sure the players
were enjoying playing the game.
I never screamed and yelled, that kind of stuff,
I was always calm. I always tried to make it fun,
you want the kids to enjoy playing, said Olson.
Theres different ways of dealing with the kids
because I found that work better than trying to
do it as a group. There were kids that I remember
that I would tell them that come on I know youre
better than that, and that would go a lot further
than me sitting there screaming and yelling.
There were numerous occasions were Olson had
the opportunity to move up in the coaching ranks
but decided that the double-A level was where he
wanted to be.
I was asked about the Bisons job every time it
came up and I always had people telling me that
I should throw my name in there. The hard part
was the commitment and with the job wise and
stuff, it didnt work too well, said Olson. I also
got settled in coaching the midget double-As and
we were successful. I knew I could always coach
there.
The three championships stand out as his best
memories.
The first one was awesome because it was the
first championship. The second one was the year
after so it was exciting and everything because
youre building off the year before and we didnt
have as good a team that year, said Olson.
The group that we had this year, winning (the
third one) up in Red Deer in my last year coaching, everything worked out.
He plans on staying in the game in a scouting
capacity with a heavy focus on the double-A level.

Spring skate focuses

on skating skills
JUSTIN SEWARD

Times Reporter

The Strathmore Skating Club has organized a series of
Spring Skate sessions that are all done within a month
and the goal is to further enhance the skaters abilities.
The 10 condensed CanSkate sessions teach the same
skills as the 10 week program, it is just the time that
has been shortened, said Tara Shaw, Strathmore Skating Club president. We find that kids actually progress
quicker in Spring Skate because they are on the ice several times a week and have more success.
The addition of Spring Skate is a way of getting practice for the season to come.
The spring session is an opportunity for those to continue enhancing the skills they have been learning all
season or to get a bit of a jump-start for the next ice session ahead, said Shaw.
Ages for the camp begin as young as 4 years old.
Another program that is being offered is PowerSkating
sessions for those who want to improve their skating in
three ice times that began on April 16 and are ongoing
on April 23 and 30.
Our power skating program is run by coach Sam Miller as opportunity for ringette and hockey players to hone
their skating skills, said Shaw. The focus is on gaining
agility and power in three, one-hour sessions.
The 9-and-under group will skate from 5-6 p.m. and
the older ones will be skating in the 6-7 p.m time slot.
The cost per skater will be $75 for all three ice times
and registration is still available.
To register, you can log onto www. strathmoreskateclub.ca and download the registration form and you can
return it with a payment to the skating clubs drop box
in the arenas lobby.

Many players are just starting their offseason regimes, but some local players
have prolonged their season because of
a desire to get noticed by junior clubs.
The Fort McMurray Oil Barons held
a spring camp from April 10-12 at the
Strathmore Family Centre and the players
enjoyed the fast-paced scrimmages.
Its a good camp, its small, fast-paced,
I like it because it keeps the momentum up and keeps the feet moving, said
Wheatland Chiefs forward Kody Hammond.
He noted that the biggest difference
between double-A and junior-A is the
awareness on the ice with the puck.
Youve got to keep your feet moving
(and) the puck (moving) at all times and
its a lot faster than double-A, said Hammond.
He is hoping to showcase his skills
enough in such a short camp that it will
earn him an invite to main camp.
Im hoping to make it to main camp
and if I do, (Ill) go from there and hopefully play junior A. If not next year, then
the year after, said Hammond. I like
coming in here as a 16-year-old, even for
some guys just getting exposed to the
league.
Chiefs forward Jayden Smith was hoping to build off the success of the season

and bring that play into the camp.

I hope I can keep up the good work
that we did in our regular season and
see if I can bring it into this camp, said
Smith. So far its going alright and (well)
see how it goes.
He noticed the speed has been a lot
faster than what he is used to.
(The speed) is quite a bit faster, but
then again youre playing with guys that
played faster hockey all year long, said
Smith. Its easy to adjust because theyre
always there for the pass.
Local Oil Barons scout Leonard Desmet
offered his perspective on the tempo of
the camp and was impressed with many
of the players who came in great shape.
The tempo is really high and we love
what were seeing out there weekend.
Weve got a lot of skilled players with a
lot of speed, said Desmet. In the AJHL
youre looking for speed because most
of these kids are looking for a scholarship or a college education and I think
thats what were looking for, kids that
can compete with good hockey sense
and skill.
The Oil Barons only take about 50 kids
in this camp, and only select a very few
to go to main camp.
Well take maybe 20 from here to our
camp in July in Edmonton and then well
bring all our vets in and from there, well
cut down to 30 guys to go to main camp,
said Desmet.

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The UFA Bisons have been on a tear
this postseason and this group is destined to try and cap it all off with a national championship at the Telus Cup,
which begins on April 20 in Riviere-duLoup, Que.
Veteran players will have to take
a larger leadership role and calm the
nerves going in.
To be completely honest at the beginning of the year, nobody really expected us to go this far, our team too
included because we were being realistic, said second year defensemen Sebastian Kilcommons. We didnt want to
get our hopes up. We started a bit of
a hot streak after Christmas and kept
pushing, not willing to give up compared to last year, its quite a feat.
He says it has been a completely
different atmosphere surrounding the
team this year and thats been the key
to what they have been able to accom-

plish this year.

This year, compared to any team Ive
ever played with, probably has the most
overall heart that Ive ever been able to
be a part of, said Kilcommons. None
of the guys ever give up, like even the
games that weve been down one or
two goals, nobody swayed or varied, it
was just optimistic that we can come
back from this.
He admits it will be a pretty special
feeling representing the Pacific region
in the Telus Cup.
Personally, Im still in a little bit of
shock because its hard enough to fathom the idea of coming from not just
representing our zone, province but
actually Western Canada for a national
title, said Kilcommons. Its incredible
to be the first Bison team to go this far
and set a standard for future teams.
The Bisons will have to keep up their
resilient play, as they will have to realize that every other team will have
played just as hard to get to this point.
Dan will emphasize the basics, work

hard and never give up because every

other team there will have made it this
far because they wont give up, said
Kilcommons. Theyll fight inch-by-inch
until the end so well have to battle it
out as long as we can.
What he is most looking forward to is
the old-style shops that Quebec has to
offer and to trying a couple of cultural
staples in crepes and poutine.
Barrett Sheen, who has had been a
force with his big frame all over the ice
this postseason, could not be any happier being apart of this run.
The Bisons havent done it before,
so to be a part of the first team, its pretty cool, said Sheen. The hope is to go
in there, do our best and well have a
good shot.
Sheen feels that once the plane lands
in Quebec, the feeling of representing
the Pacific will become more of a reality.
I think once we get there itll feel
like it actually happened and itll start
to sink in, said Sheen.
He is looking forward to experience
the new language and the excitement
around the town with the event.

Silhouettes shining
TARA SMITH
Strathmore Silhouettes

The Strathmore Silhouettes
competitive gymnasts have been
working hard and are already
past the halfway point of their
competitive season, which runs
from January to May.
So far they have competed in
Lethbridge, Red Deer (twice),
Medicine Hat, Airdrie, and Calgary (twice). Recently eight
athletes attended the Southern
Zones Championships in Red
Deer in the Provincial 1 and
Provincial 2 levels. They all performed extremely well.
At the Provincial 2 level, this
competition is also trials to provincials, with the Top 12 athletes
from each age group advancing on. Three of the Silhouettes

qualified to go to provincials.
Sophia Sanders (age 11) and
Erin Clarke (age 12) qualified in
the Provincial 2 Tyro category,
and Kassie Greig (age 17) will
be representing the Silhouettes
in the P2 Open category.
This is exciting for the Silhouettes for a couple of reasons. The
P2 Tyro category is the largest of
the competition, with 42 athletes
competing for 12 spots. Not only
did two of our athletes make it,
but Erin Clarke placed first allaround, making her the P2 Tyro
Southern Zones champion (on
her birthday, no less!).
Also, this will be the last
Zones/Provincials that Kassie
Greig will be attending, as she
is graduating from Strathmore
High School this year. Kassie
also won her category, making

her the P2 Open Southern Zones

champion! I have been Kassies
coach for about 10 years now,
and she has also been helping
me coach for the last couple of
years, so this will be a bittersweet event!
With the help of Sophia, Erin
and Kassie, as well as the other
P2 athletes, Zoe and Rachel, the
Silhouettes also won the third
place P2 team award.
Provincials will take place
April 17-19 in Lethbridge. The
season will end off with competitions in Okotoks, Calgary
and Canmore. The Strathmore
Silhouettes precompetitive team
(ages 6-8), coached by Kassie,
will also be attending the competitions in Calgary and Canmore for their first competitive
experience.

Crowthers rugby program

takes introductory approach
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Crowther Memorial Junior High
Schools rugby teams are looking to
be strong right off the bat and have a
month to prepare for their tournament
season.
Were really just introducing the
game to them and rather than have two
practices and going over the exact same
skills, the boys and girls can learn together at the same time. Its just more
or less, they can grow together, said
head coach Wayne Hvingelby. Its not
so much a mixed team but sometimes
we will have the guys and girls team

playing at the same time. For tournaments, well have the boys enter their
squad and the girls will play their squad
as well.
Were probably the only junior high
that actually has a rugby team. We play
a lot of high school teams and we try to
play their junior squads.
Some of these high schools will have
their Grade 9s and 10s with their senior
team and basically what we do is say
hey bring out your younger kids and
give them some game time against us.
There will be a lot of experience with
a lot of players already having a year
under their belts.
Last year we just had a couple of

Grade 9s and a lot of Grade 8s. This

year a lot of those Grade 8s turned into
Grade 9s, so looking to improve this
year will be a little bit more successful
for them, but itll be good for them to
just get that experience and move on to
high school, said Hvingelby. My overall goal with the rugby program at our
school is to more introduce the game to
them and get them the experience so
that theyre a little bit more prepared
when they hit the high school. The
teams first tournament will be May 9 in
Lethbridge.
There will be some exhibition matches at Crowther where they will play visiting Calgary teams.

Inline hockey registration deadline inching closer

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Another Wheatland Inline
Hockey season is around the
corner and now that hockey
season is complete, there are
more players pouring in.
I noticed in March that we
got quite a few in and then
it tapered off. In the end of
March, first week of April,
calls are coming in right, left
and centre, so its starting to
pick up again, said President
Lynne Kozma. I would like

to hit around the 100 mark

for players and to make it
fun.
There are still some spots
to fill on some teams and
Kozma is hopeful that more
players will register for them.
I really need U18 and U8
players. In the U18s Im low,
probably down 10 players,
now its getting tough with
people getting jobs now,
said Kozma.
She feels that this year,
having an open registration
is what made it a slower pro-

cess with players

I keep my registration
open because I dont want
to ever say, you cant play.
Thats where maybe I have
to change it and have a final
date, said Kozma.
She said that this year there
has been a great interest from
surrounding communities.
There are a few new ones
coming from Langdon and
Chestermere. I guess there
will be 20 or so new players,
said Kozma.
Finding jersey sponsorship

has proved to be no easy feat

this year.
I sometimes think that I
should charge more so I can
buy more jerseys, my husband is pounding the pavement looking for some sponsors for jerseys, but its all
learning and growing, said
Kozma.
The season will begin May
4 with the registration deadline set for April 24.
Players can register at
www.wheatlandinlinehockey.com.

LIVING WITH CANCER

September 18, 1951

April 8, 2015
It is with extreme sadness that we announce the
sudden passing of Lavern Rudy Wagler, a devoted husband, dedicated father, honourable son
and brother, as well as veteran with the Canadian
Armed Forces. Lavern was born in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario on September 18, 1951, to Harvey
and Edna Wagler. Lavern is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Sonya Wagler, his son and
daughter-in-law Kevin and Elayne Wagler, his
daughter and son-in-law Nadeen and Terry Lafferty, his four-legged canine partners Maxwell, Jeeter,
Buster, Mac and Molly, his siblings Mary, Milton,
Ray, Delford, Harvey, Ervin, Ruth and Edward, as
well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Lavern is predeceased by his parents Harvey and
Edna Wagler, and Brother Delton, all of Wellesley,
Ontario. Laverns journey through life was filled
with many great achievements, including his dedication to the Canadian Armed Forces with who he
served 26 years. His service included two oversee tours in Cypress as a peacekeeper. Lavern
was also an active member of the Royal Canadian
Legion, as a Sergeant of Arms of the Colour Party.
Since retiring from the military, Lavern worked in
highway maintenance and safety. Laverns hobbies
and interests included cooking, gardening, carpentry, watching curling, spending time with family,
and avidly cheering on his Toronto Maple Leafs
and Blue Jays. To those who knew Lavern well,
they would describe him as direct, stubborn, and
spoke his mind with a dry sense of humor, but deep
down had a heart of gold and was filled with love
and admiration for those close to him. Lavern will
greatly missed by his loved ones near and far, as
well as his Military Family. Lavern is now reunited
with his special friend Coalie. To follow the wishes
of Lavern and Family, he will be cremated in Strathmore, Alberta. The service to celebrate Laverns life
was held on Monday, April 13, 2015 at the Royal
Canadian Legion in Strathmore, Alberta at 14:00.
A celebration of life service will also commence in
Ontario at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations
can be made directly to The Arthritis Society (393
University Avenue, Suite 1700, Toronto, ON M5G
1E6, Canada). To send condolences, please visit Laverns obituary at www.wheatlandfuneralhome.ca.

ATTENTION
WATER USERS

As the water season has arrived, we require all

of the stakeholders to provide a minimum of
48 hours notice prior to your planned irrigation
start up, and 24 hours notice before shutting
the water off. In addition, it is also important
to inform us when you are shut down due to
maintenance requirements or for any other
unplanned reasons.
This enables us to efficiently add or remove
water from our canals which allows us to
provide the users with the best possible service
while managing the water more efficiently.
Please call to order your water on and off.
