Ottoville looking at a propane bus

BY NANCY SPENCER
DHI Media Editor
nspencer@delphosherald.com
OTTOVILLE Superintendent
Scott Mangas shared his research
on a propane bus as the Ottoville
Local School Districts next purchase for its fleet.
Ive started looking at the propane buses and have talked with
some other school districts who
have them and I think its a good

idea, Mangas said.

Mangas reported that while
a propane bus is approximately
$10,000 more than a diesel bus, the
savings total $28,000 with propane
less than a half the cost of diesel
fuel and eight quarts of oil versus
22 quarts with the diesel.
The propane buses also run
a lot cleaner with less emissions
requirements, they are easier to
work on and they run every quietly, Mangas added.

to county contest

Board member Barb Hoersten

asked if the different type of bus
would raise the districts insurance rates. Mangas said he would
check on that and have an answer
for her.
The district would have to install
a filling station at a cost of $11,000
and the propane buses get 5-6 mpg
versus the 7-8 mpg with diesel.
Donna German was given the
position of cross categorical special education teacher for the

upcoming 2015-16 school year.

German comes to the school with
a masters +15 and 20 years of
experience. The district will add a
cross-categorical unit to serve students in grades K-12 with multiple
disabilities and emotional disabilities. At this time, Ottoville has
three students in grades K-2 who
will receive their instruction in the
unit.

FORT JENNINGS Fort Jennings Elementary Principal

Matthew Dub announced Wednesday the winners of the
Modern Woodsman Civic Oration Contest held between fifthand sixth-grade students recently.
First place went to Ellie Lindeman, Eric Wieging took second place and Haven Knippen placed third, Dub explained
to the school board. Students chose a landmark and presented
an oral historical perspective on the site.
First- and second-place contestants will compete in the
county contest on May 2 at the Putnam County YMCA.
Board members accepted the following donations: $500
from Medical Mutual for scholarships, $500 from the
Musketeer Athletic Boosters to Cheer Fund (Spirit Wear proceeds) and $750 from Musketeer Athletic Boosters to Athletic
Department for summer basketball.
Also approved was amending the estimated receipts/appropriations where the receipts were greater than anticipated
revenues, less than anticipated revenues, or not included in
the original budget. Board President Karl Schimmoeller said
their estimations of expenditures are usually within $1,000 of
budget.
Members also commended Musical Director Rosemary
Warnecke and the entire cast for a fine performance of the
school musical Shrek, Jr.
Summer student workers were also approved for use on
an as-needed basis and include Alyssa Wiedeman, Sydney
German, Aaron Neidert, Jessica Young, Dylan Wiechart and
Trevor Neidert.
They will be operating mowers as well as other school
equipment and paid the state minimum wage, Schimmoeller
said.

Spears Lawn Care growing like a weed

Business grows from
2 employees to 46
BY NANCY SPENCER
DHI Media Editor
nspencer@delphosherald.com
DELPHOS Spears Lawn Care
has always been growing, according to
co-owner Lindell Spears. Started on a
farm on State Route 66 just outside of
Delphos, the business has really shown
a growth spurt in the last five years with
the employee base going from a 3-man
crew and Spears wife keeping the books

to 46 total employees spread out over

three businesses.
I started the business to supplement
my wifes and my income in 1990.
I hadnt really looked at any type of
retirement other than a 401K through
my job and I was getting older and I
knew I had to get something going,
Spears recalled. We didnt even have a
lawnmower and we were starting a lawn
care business.
The first year, Spears, his father, Earl,
and his father-in-law, Rollie Blockberger,
traveled with a trailer loaded with a single lawn mower, a blower and a trimmer.
They accepted commercial jobs and
worked from sunup to sundown. Spears

wife, Susan, kept the paperwork in order

and also worked outside the home.
My wife and I sacrificed a lot over
the first few years to build up our
equipment, Spears said. We reinvested
everything back into the business.
After about seven years, Spears said
he knew he could do something with the
business and he started cultivating clients.
I gave up my real job after 31 years
and now this is something I can do until
I retire, Spears said. This is nothing
like we imagined when we started. It
was a lot of hard work. It still is but now
we have a great crew.

New manure regulations near

BY JAMES HOORMAN
Putnam County Extension Educator

The following article was written by Peggy

Hall and Glen Arnold with OSU Extension
(Corn Newsletter, 2015-07).
Ohios legislature passed a bill intended to
control algae production in Lake Erie and its
western basin. The law will regulate manure
and fertilizer applications in the watersheds of
the western basin of Lake Erie. The effective
date of this new law is June 21. The final bill
contains the following provisions:
Fertilizer application restrictions in the
western basin:
For applications of fertilizer in the western basin, a person may not apply fertilizer,
defined as nitrogen or phosphorous, under
these conditions: (1) on snow-covered or
frozen soil, (2) when the top two inches of
soil are saturated from precipitation or (3) in a
granular form when the local weather forecast
for the application area contains greater than
a 50 percent chance of precipitation exceeding one inch in a 12-hour period, unless the
fertilizer is injected into the ground, incorporated within 24 hours of surface application or
applied onto a growing crop.
Small and medium operations may apply
for a temporary exemption from the restrictions, as explained below. The ODA will
have authority to investigate complaints of
potential violations and to assess penalties for
violations, which may not exceed $10,000 for
each violation.
Manure application restrictions in the
western basin:
A person may not surface apply manure in
the western basin under any of the following
circumstances: (1) on snow-covered or frozen
soil, (2) when the top two inches of soil are
saturated from precipitation or (3) when the
local weather forecast for the application area

contains greater than a 50 percent chance of

precipitation exceeding one-half inch in a
24-hour period, unless the manure is injected
into the ground, incorporated within 24 hours
of surface application, applied onto a growing
crop or if in the event of an emergency, the
chief of the division of soil and water resources or the chiefs designee provides written
consent and the manure application is made
in accordance with procedures established in
the United States Department of Agriculture
natural resources conservation service practice standard code 590 prepared for this state.
Small and medium operations may apply
for a temporary exemption from the restrictions, as explained below. The ODA will
have authority to investigate complaints of
potential violations and to assess penalties for
violations, which may not exceed $10,000 for
each violation.
Exemptions for small and medium operations:
Small and medium agricultural operations
may apply for a temporary exemption from
the laws restrictions on fertilizer and manure
applications. The chief of the division of soil
and water resources may grant an exemption
of up to one year for a medium agricultural
operation and up to two years for a small operation, if the operation is working toward compliance. An exempted operation may request
technical assistance to reach compliance and
will not be subject to civil penalties for violations. The law defines small and medium
agricultural operations in the same way as the
Livestock Environmental Permitting program,
based on the number of livestock according to
species. ORC 1511(D).

8 ears corn
8 slices bacon
Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
Preheat a grill to high (if using a charcoal grill, coals
are ready when you can hold your hand 5 inches above
grill for just 1 to 2 seconds). Pull back husks completely
(do not remove), exposing corn. Discard silk, using a
vegetable brush to remove silk completely.
Wrap 1 strip of bacon around each ear of corn. Pull
corn husks back up, covering bacon and corn. Tie open
end of husk with kitchen twine.
Grill corn, turning occasionally with tongs, until kernels are tender and bacon is cooked through, 15 to 20
minutes (husks will blacken). Transfer corn to a large
bowl or platter; serve with salt and pepper for seasoning.
Serves 8.

Commodores edge Wildcats in pitchers duel
DELPHOS Neither team got much going against the
others pitchers Wednesday night.
It came down to the ultimate in small-ball as Perry scored
a run in the top of the seventh and survived 2-1 Wednesday
night in non-league baseball activity at Wildcat Field at
Jefferson High School.
The Wildcats (1-8) got a good pitching performance by
starter Jacob Pulford (4 innings pitched, 1 hit, 1 earned run,
8 free passes, 4 strikeouts) and reliever Brett Mahlie (3 IPs, 2
hits, 1 earned run, 1 BB, 2 Ks).

You have to come in
mentally ready to play every

this started last night when
we didnt have a good practice and we played that way
today, Stober conceded. We
have a lot of games the next
two to three weeks and we

made a lot of mental mistakes
and werent anticipating anything. At the plate, we swung
at way too many pitches either
way high or in the dirt; we

havent done that all season.

Jefferson (2-4) threatened in
the bottom of the first against
Perry complete-game pitcher
Kaylynne Trent (7 innings, 7
hits, 3 runs, 1 earned, 5 bases-

on-balls, 7 strikeouts). Sarah

Thitoff (3 walks) led fof with a

Shayla Rice walked but
Samantha Branham bounced
out to short to finish the frame.
After Jefferson complete-game starter Claire
Thompson (7 IPs, 9 hits, 7 runs,
4 earned, 1 BB, 6 Ks) retired
the Lady Commodores (3-5) in
order in the first, they hung a run
up in the second on a hit batter
(Imani Watson), a wild pitch, a
walk to Kara Hoelscher, two stolen bases and an error on Eden
Godfreys ground ball; Watson
beat the relay home from first
sacker Branham. However, after
Godfrey stole second, Thompson
bore down to get out of the inning
with no more damage.

Bauer leads Indians

over White Sox 4-2
Associated Press
CLEVELAND The Indians salvaged the finale of a
miserable opening homestand.
Trevor Bauer won consecutive starts for the first time in
his 3-plus seasons in the major leagues, helping Cleveland
beat the Chicago White Sox 4-2 Wednesday to stop a 4-game
losing streak.
Its huge for team morale, Bauer said after the Indians
first home victory this year. We had a rough
homestand, but we battled through today.
Cleveland lost its first four home games and
lost three players to injuries. Left fielder Michael
Brantley missed the final four games with a
sore back and catcher Yan Gomes sprained his
right knee, an injury likely to sideline him for
two months. Pitcher Carlos Carrasco sustained a
bruised jaw after being hit in the face with a line
drive Tuesday.
Bauer (2-0), who pitched six hitless innings against
Houston in his first start this season, held the White Sox
without a hit until Jose Abreu singled leading off the fourth.
Chicago loaded the bases with one out but J.B. Shuck fouled
out and Geovany Soto struck out.
Making his 36th big-league start, Bauer gave up two runs,
four hits and four walks in six innings with eight strikeouts.
Manager Terry Francona is impressed Bauer is finally
showing the consistency the Indians have been waiting to see
since acquiring him from Arizona before the 2013 season.
Hes got good stuff, Francona said. He has all the
pitches. Im most impressed by the fact hes not giving up
runs.
Cody Allen walked pinch-hitter Emilio Bonifacio leading off the ninth and hit Micah Johnson with a pitch. Adam
Eaton struck out trying to sacrifice, Melky Cabrera hit into
a forceout and Allen struck out Abreu for his second save.
Cleveland never led while getting swept by Detroit in a threegame series and trailed throughout Tuesdays loss to the White
Sox.
It was important for us to win because we hadnt won
yet, Francona said.
John Danks (0-2) gave up four runs three earned
and six hits in 4 2/3 innings. Chicago had won its previous
three games.
Michael Bourns third-inning groundout gave Cleveland
its first lead since last Thursday against Houston. Lonnie
Chisenhall hit a 2-run double in the fourth and Carlos
Santana added an RBI single in the fifth.
Chicago got a pair of runs in the sixth on Alexei Ramirezs
RBI groundout and Shucks run-scoring single.

Dalton Schmersal did a good job
holding down the high-powered St.

top of the third as Louge would
single to start the inning and later
scored on a Lancer fielding error.

Blue Jays hold off Fort Jennings

By LARRY HEIING

DELPHOS Theres a saying in

baseball: It aint over till the fat lady
sings.
The lady starting warming up her
vocal cords as the Jays jumped out to a
9-0 after two innings.
The Musketeers shoved her back on
the bus with a valiant comeback before
falling 14-10 in non-league action at
Stadium Park.
Trailing by nine, Fort Jennings loaded the bases as Connor Stechschulte and
Ryan Hoersten walked around a single
by Luke Trentman. Mark Metzger ignited the comeback with a single down
the third-base line to score a pair. Alex
Sealts doubled and four walks, along
with a hit batter, pulled the Musketeers
within 9-7 as the rout turned into a
battle.
I told our players that teams come
back from 8-10 runs down all the time,
said Fort Jennings coach Eric Schwab.
With our young team-I just reminded
them that we are never out of a
game and luckily we got some breaks
to get back in the game.
The Jays got some much needed breathing room in the bottom of
the inning as Jorden Boone and Jaret
Jackson walked. Eric Vogts single and
Jesse Dittos double provided enough
firepower to extended the Jays lead to
five at 12-7.
After both offenses failed to score
in the fourth, Fort Jennings mounted a
2-out rally as Stechschulte and Trentman
singled. Hoersten drove in two with a
triple to left and Metzger singled down
the line to pull Fort Jennings within
12-10.
Hitting is contagious in baseball,
commented Schwartz. We strung some
hits together, along with patience at the
plate, to put some runs on the board.
St. Johns also got something going
in the bottom of the fifth with two
outs with a single by Josh Warnecke.
Brandon Slates drive to center fell in
for a 2-base knock, putting both runners
in scoring position. Austin Heiings single got past the outfield all the way to
the fence to drive in the runners. The

Lancer coach Eric Fishpaw noted.

He has kind of been our relief guy
this year or our third or fourth starter this year. With the pitch count,
we had to get him out of there so
we could have him for the weekend,
but he did a very nice job in those
middle innings for us.
In the top of the fifth, Lincolnview
(4-5) had some trouble putting away

Jeffcats
(Continued from page 6)
The Lady Wildcats tied it in home second. Kylee Haehn
walked and Kaylin Hartsock was hit by a pitch. Maddy
Jettinghoff bunted aboard when no one covered first to load
the bases. An out later, Thitoff worked a free pass to bring
Haehn home. However, Thompson forced Hartsock at home
and Pimpas was retired to keep it a tie game.
Perry took the lead for good with a 3-spot in the top of
the third on four hits, including a 2-run blast to left by Livia
Turman (also scoring Cortland Fowler) and a run-scoring
single by Hoelscher (Watson).
The Red and White tried to retaliate in the home third.
With one down, Branham lined a hit to right and Haehn
followed suit to left. However, Hartsocks bunt attempt was
popped up; catcher Sarah Greene alertly caught it in front of
home plate and doubled Haehn off first.
Jefferson turned its only double play in the visiting fourth.
Delphos again threatened in the home fourth. With two
down, Thitoff hustled out an infield hit past the pitcher and
took second on the throw into the dugout. Thompson singled
to put runners on the corners; however, she was called for not
returning to the base in time for the third out.
Perry tacked on its final three tallies in the top of the fifth
on a throwing error on Watsons sacrifice bunt, plating Trent
and Turman (singles), then plating Watson on a 1-out ground
ball by Godfrey.
In the Wildcat fifth, Pimpas lined a knock to left but Rice
bounced to Perry shortstop Turman, who stepped on second
and relayed to first for the second twin-killing turned by the
Lady Commodores.
Jefferson tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh.
Thitoff led off with a free pass; an out later Pimpas singled
to left center. Rices bouncer was booted, allowing Thitoff
to hustle around third and into home; on the throw home,
Pimpas kept going to third and when the batter headed for
second and drew the late throw, Pimpas headed for the dish.
Branham bounced out to short, moving pinch-runner Kiya
Wollenhaupt to third. She was left there as the final out of
the game was recorded.
Were not extremely young or inexperienced, Stober
added. We do have some youngsters still working in and out
of the lineup. We will get better.
Both teams return to the diamond tonight for league
action: Jefferson hosting Paulding (NWC) and Perry versus
Ridgemont (NWCC).

St. Johns first baseman Jesse Ditto stretches to get the out of Austin Luebrecht
of Fort Jennings during non-league baseball action Wednesday at Stadium
Park. (DHI Media/Larry Heiing)
Musketeer fielders quickly got the ball
to catcher Brandon Wehri to nail Heiing
at the plate trying to score.
Troy Elwer relieved Slate in the sixth
inning for St. Johns and retired all six
Musketeers he faced to earn the save.
This was a total team effort tonight
for a needed win, exclaimed St. Johns
coach Jerry Jackson. Heiings pitching
was effective the first time through the
batting order until he seemed to lose
the strike zone in the third inning. Slate
came in and closed the door to hold onto
our lead. Then Elwer, only a freshman,
calmly came in and retired every batter
he faced for the save.
The Musketeers fell behind early
with the Jays loading the bases in the
first inning on a single by Heiing, a
Boone walk and Eric Vogt getting hit
by a Sam Vetter pitch. Ditto drove in
the first run of the game with a single to
center. The big blow of the inning came
off the bat of Warnecke with two outs as
he singled, driving in two runs.
After Fort Jennings went down in

batters as Keli Ralston and Dalton

Hines combined to allow six runs in the
frame and the margin expanded to 18-2.
We preach a lot about defense
and we have a good infield and
solid outfield, and (Tuesday) night
we beat a good LCC team and
we had great defense. Tonight, we
didnt allow our defense a chance
with the walks. St. Henrys 16 hits

order in the second inning by Jays starter Heiing, they added a handful in the
bottom of the inning. Boones hot streak
continued with a single after a walk to
Heiing. Seth Linder doubled, driving in
both runners with no outs. Vogt was hit
by the pitch for the second straight at-bat
to get aboard. Dittos sac fly scored
Linder and Jacob Youngpeters solid hit
made the score 7-0. Warnecke should be
called the mailman because he delivered
again with a drive to center to drive in a
pair of Jays to lead 9-0.
A lot of players came up big in the
game for us, continued Jackson. Our
batters were hitting line drives to the
outfield grass and thats a positive sign.

Roundup

(Continued from page 6)

Jacob had trouble with walks
tonight just like Brandan (Herron)
the night before but he pitched out
of a couple of jams. He got us through
the fourth inning and well take that
every time, especially from our young
guys, Jefferson head coach Doug Geary
explained. Brett also did a great job in
relief; not bad for a freshman in his first
varsity action when it was a competitive
game. Our pitchers gave us a chance to
win; our staff grew up some tonight.
The Wildcats only managed three
of their own hits against Perry complete-game winner Money (7 IPs, 1
earned run, 2 BBs, 4 Ks).
We didnt really threaten much offensively tonight; we only had 25 at-bats,
Geary added. We had two innings where
we had a challenge and Perry made the
plays defensively; give them credit for
that. It was a game where the wind made
it hard to drive the ball long; you could
hit it hard and it wasnt going anywhere.
It came down to them in the top of the
seventh getting back-to-back hits with
a stolen base in between and thats all
it took. The good thing is well be right
back on the field tonight.
That would be a home game with
Northwest Conference foe Paulding at
home. First pitch is 5 p.m.

That kind of admission
is hard to overcome in my

If you knew who did it,
why didnt you tell us this

I guess I just dont quite

DEAR H.S.: Your husband may
mean well, but he may not realize
what being the object of ridicule
can do to a little girls self-esteem.
Youre that childs mother, and you
know what to do -- so do it. Sometimes girls have to stick together,
and this is one of them.
DEAR ABBY: After 26 years
of marriage, I recently left my husband. We live only a few blocks
away from each other, so we run
into each other often at the store,
the gas station, everywhere.
My problem is more about running into some of the women he
cheated on me with. One of them
always ends up at the same shopping center or restaurant I happen
to be at. She thinks I dont know
who she is.
At first I didnt want to say any-

DEAR CANT: You dont

know whether the woman your ex
cheated with is stable or some kind
of wing nut. Sometimes its safer
not to be able to find the words
rather than pick a fight. My advice
is to avoid her as much as possible.
DEAR ABBY: I recently took a
long international flight. The man
sitting next to me coughed during
the eight-hour flight without once
covering his mouth.
What is a polite way to tell
someone to cover his/her mouth
when coughing? Two days into
my trip, I developed a fever and a

his illness on to me. -- FEVERISH

DEAR FLIER: Your seat
partner showed an extreme lack
of consideration not only for you,
but also for other passengers seated in his immediate vicinity -- and
its very possible he infected others besides you. It is not impolite
to ASK people who cough and
sneeze to please cover their mouth
so you wont catch what they have,
and thats what you should have
done right away, or ask to change
your seat if an unoccupied one was
available.

Not so much. Never,
actually.
These snow tires
have lasted me four
or five winters now,
and it seems theyll be
good for four or five
more. Tires last forever now. Everybody
thinks the big changes in our lives over
the last 40 years have
been high-tech ones.
Home fax machines,
home computers, the
Internet, hundreds of
channels on cable TV,
cellphones. But there
have been some great
low-tech changes, too.
Have you noticed that
you almost never have
to change a flat tire
anymore? Ive owned
cars for years that never had a single flat tire.
When I was a teenager, tires were always
going flat. It seemed
every other time I
drove the family car
somewhere I got a flat.
Four of my friends
were late for our senior
prom because they had
to stop and change flat
tires -- in their rented tuxedos. And this
was in the days before
Handi Wipes. Its hard
to imagine anything
dirtier than a tire. If
you changed a tire,
you got filthy. Dirt,
grease, road kill, cigarette butts, spit. Its a
DNA festival all over
your hands, getting on
everything you touch:
the door handle, the
steering wheel, the
gearshift, the prom
dresses.

take the flat to the gas

station, and the owner
or the mechanic would
find the leak, repair it
and throw it back in
the trunk. Thats all
gas stations did then:
sell gas and fix cars.
There was no candy,
no magazines, no coffee, no doughnuts, no
tables and chairs, no
lattes, no Snapples, no
hot cashews, no hot
dogs, no pizza slices, no made-to-order
sandwiches, no bagels,
no lottery tickets. If
you were lucky, theyd
have a soda machine
out front.
The last place
youd go to fix a flat
today would be a gas
station. The gas station is where youd
go to eat lunch and
read a newspaper after you called AAA
on your cellphone to
send someone over to
fix your flat tire. A gas
station is where you go
to buy cigarettes and
beer, not to get your
tire fixed.
You could try to fix
a flat yourself, if you
knew where they hid
spare tires in modern
cars. Ive had my car
five years, and Ive
never seen it. Its in
the back somewhere.
Under
something.
And would you know
how to use those new
jacks? The ones that
look like fancy nutcrackers? As if that
tiny, little thing is really going to lift your
car. As if you could get
the lug nuts off with
the little toy tire iron
that comes with new
cars.
When I got home
from the garage, Sue
asked me to run over
to the gas station to
pick up some bread
and milk.
Its supposed to
snow tonight.

Choose your options with

Ex-NFL star Hernandez convicted of murder, sentenced to life

By MICHELLE R. SMITH
Associated Press
FALL RIVER, Mass. Former
New England Patriots star Aaron
Hernandez was convicted of
first-degree murder and sentenced
to life in prison Wednesday for a
deadly late-night shooting, sealing
the downfall of an athlete who once
had a $40 million contract and a
standout career ahead of him.
Hernandez, 25, who had been
considered one of the top tight
ends in professional football, shook
his head, pursed his lips and sat

down after the jury forewoman pronounced him guilty in the slaying
of Odin Lloyd, a 27-year-old landscaper and amateur weekend football player who was dating the sister
of Hernandezs fiancee.
Hernandezs mother, Terri, and
his fiancee, Shayanna Jenkins, cried
and gasped when they heard the
verdict. Hernandez, his eyes red,
mouthed to them: Be strong. Be
strong. Lloyds mother also cried.
Jurors deliberated for 36 hours
over seven days before rendering
their decision, which also included
convictions on weapons charges.

The jury found that he was

just a man who committed a brutal
murder, District Attorney Thomas
Quinn said after the verdict. The
fact that he was a professional athlete meant nothing in the end.
Lloyd was shot six times early
on June 17, 2013, in a deserted
industrial park near Hernandezs
home in North Attleborough. The
motive has never been explained.
Police almost immediately zeroed in on the former Pro
Bowl athlete because they found
in Lloyds pocket the key to a car
the NFL player had rented. Within

hours of Hernandezs arrest, the

Patriots cut him from the team. The
team declined to comment on the
verdict.
Prosecutors presented a wealth
of evidence that Hernandez was
with Lloyd at the time he was killed,
including home security video from
Hernandezs mansion, witness testimony and cellphone records that
tracked Lloyds movements.
Hernandezs lawyer, James
Sultan, acknowledged for the first
time during closing arguments that
Hernandez was there when Lloyd
was killed.

may be able to apply manure to a live
crop like hay, pasture, wheat or cover
