LPG will be stored at ground level, in the open air and readily accessible in case of
emergency and where possible, protected from the extremes of weather and in a secure
fenced enclosure at least 2 metres high. The floor will be paved or compacted and be kept
clear of flammable materials, weeds and rubbish. The storage site will not be near any
drains or cellars. Appropriate signage will be displayed around the storage area boundary.
All cylinders whether full or empty will be stored upright when in use, stored or
transported and be suitably secured.
Gas appliances will always be fixed when used in temporary buildings.
On completion of work, but always at the end of the shift, cylinder valves will be closed
and regulators removed.
Adequate and suitable fire fighting equipment will be set in place before gas appliances
are used and operatives trained and competent in their use.
Only approved regulators, fittings and hoses will be used. Hoses shall be orange coloured
and clamped to fittings using permanent clamps.
No gas appliance will be used in a space that is not adequately ventilated at both high
and low levels.
All installations in hard piping will be to the relevant British Standard.
Where reasonably practicable, cylinders will be lifted and moved by mechanical
means.
All operatives will be trained, instructed and informed on the site emergency procedures
involving LPGs and best practice manual handling techniques.
Pre-use and weekly checks of cylinders and equipment will be made by competent
persons.
When open storage is not reasonably practicable, cylinders or other containers may be
stored in a specially designed storage area, which will have a 30 minute fire resisting
structure and well dispersed ventilation openings to a safe place in the open air.
Appropriate signage will be displayed around the outside of the area.
Only trained, instructed and competent operatives will store cylinders and use the
equipment.
