UNIT 1: FINDING MY WAY.

Department of Mathematics. IES el Fontanal. Lebrija. Sevilla

1.- Powers of ten. Large and small numbers. SCALE OF

UNIVERSE

Travel from the microscopic world to the outer limits of the Universe ,from inner
atom to outer galaxy Ctrl click here and enjoy the video

Large numbers are numbers that are significantly larger than those ordinarily
used in everyday life
Examples:
• The number of neuronal connections in the human brain (estimated at 1014)
• The Sun age is about 4,5 billion years: 4,5 ⋅10 12 years
• he Earth Mass is 4,5 ⋅10 24 kg

Small numbers are number close to zero

Examples:
• Radius of a hydrogen atom: 2.5 10-11 m ⋅
• Mass of an electron: 9 ⋅10 −31 kg

HOMEWORK
a) Remember and fill in :
•10 2 = 100 • 0,1 =10 −1
•10 3 = 1000 • 0,01 =10 −2
•10 6 = _________ is a million •10 −4 = __________ ___
•10 12
= __________ __________ __ is a _________ •10 −7
= __________ ____

b) Find more examples of large and small numbers

2.- Maps: Scale and distance

If you are travelling from London to Oxford, for example, and you need to know
how far it is, it would be very difficult to work this out if the map does not have a
scale.

Go to the POWERPOINT SCALE AN DISTANCE

HOMEWORK
1) The scale of a map is 1:500.000.
a) A distance is measured as 3cm on the map. How many km is this
equivalent to in real life?
b) What distance on the map will represent 25km?

2) The scale of a map is 1:300.000.

c) A distance between two towns is measured as 12 cm on the map. How
many km is this equivalent to in real life?
d) What distance on the map will represent 24km?

3) A particular map shows a scale of 1:250.000 What would the map distance
(in cm) be if the actual distance is 100 km?

4) A particular map shows a scale of 1 : 5000. What is the actual distance ( in

m ) if the map distance is 8 cm?

3) CONVERSION TABLE : IMPERIAL to METRIC

Length
1 mile = 1.609 km
1 yard = 0.9144 m
1 foot = 0.3048 m
1 inch = 25.4 mm

HOMEWORK

1) How many km are there in 5 miles?

2) how many feet are in 3,45 km?
3) how many yard are in 72,5 miles?
4) Basic questions on geometry ( perpendicular and parallel lines )

A line extends infinitely and is named by labeling two points on the line with
capital letters or by putting a lower case letter near it. Both are illustrated
below:

, which does not have the arrow heads, indicates a line segment, which is
finite in length (only the part of the line from A to B).

This lines are parallels

A right angle is one that measures exactly 90 degrees:

These lines are perpendicular

this lines are intersecting lines

HOMEWORK

C/ Jerez
C/ Lebrija
C / Sevilla

C/ Cádiz

C/ Huelva

On the following street map :

1) Identify the streets that are parallels

2) What streets are perpendicular?
3) Identify the streets that are intersecting
