The Earth in the Universe Suggestion Teaching Plan and the activity.

Learning objectives :
Revision of:
The structure of the Earth
and its place in the
Universe
How scientists use data
and explanations to
predict how things might
happen

Learning outcomes :
Be able to recall more
information than you could
before the lesson about the
Earth in the Universe
Understand what you need to
still concentrate on in revision
for the exam

Choose from the following activities to suit in a group.

A3 Summary sheet
Each student needs a sheet to themselves. There are areas for the
students to fill in. They could work in pairs, but must write their own
answers down.
(This activity is used as a concept of VAK (Visualise, Auditory and
Kinesthetic)
Loop cards
Students to work in pairs. Each pair has a set of Loop cards. They
select the first one and look at the clue. They find the answer on a
second card and look at the new clue. If the students get all the
correct answers they should be able to arrange all the cards in a
loop. They should check their loop with another pair and discuss
any differences. (5-10 minutes)

Question loop
Each card has on it an answer and a question.

Loop cards

Choose one card to begin and choose the card with the correct
answer on to place next to the first card.
Read the question on the new card and find the correct answer to
that.
If done correctly the cards will form a continuous loop around the
table.
(5 minutes)
Discussion cards
Depending on the size of the class and their ability this activity
could be carried out in a number of ways. With a smaller class
stations could be used with the discussion cards positioned around
the room. Students should be given two minutes at each station to
think about the statement on the cards. They should decide
whether they agreed with the statement or not and then explain
why they have decided that. For larger groups the cards could be
printed onto A5 and pairs given one of each card on their desks.
(10 minutes)

Ideas about Science Data and Explanations

Use the sheets as a resource between two. The students should
identify the data and explanations by underlining in the appropriate
colour. Following this they should use textbooks to come up with
their own examples. These should be shared as fours and then as a
class
(20 minutes)

Millionaire
This could be done as a quick quiz at some point in the lesson.
There are only about 6 questions so it shouldnt take too long, but
teams could be picked and

Plenary: What do you need to do now?

During the lesson students will have found out what areas they
know well and the areas that they need to do more work on. To
bring this together they should complete the self assessment sheet.
They should then set themselves targets for their revision. AfL V K
