Internet of Things in Industries: A Survey

ABSTRACT:
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a scenario in which objects, animals or people
are provided with unique identifiers and the ability to automatically transfer data
over

network

without

requiring

or

interaction. IoT has evolved from the convergence of wireless technologies, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and the Internet. The internet of things also
called an Internet of objects. The Internet of Things (IoT) provides a virtual view, via
the Internet Protocol, to a huge variety of real life objects, ranging from a car, to a
teacup, to a building, to trees in a forest. Its appeal is the ubiquitous generalized
access to the status and location of any thing we may be interested in. Online
monitoring system for continuous casting equipment is established based on IOT
sensing technology and communication technology. As the system contains a
variety of sensor types like temperature sensor, pressure sensor, speed sensor etc..
And data transmission protocols, it will lead to a large amount of heterogeneous
data of different sensors current and voltage values and the data is difficult to
integrate with applications in upper layer.
A data processing framework is introduced into the system to deal with such
problems. The framework focuses on protocol conversion, data processing methods
and integration with applications in upper layer. A data processing framework is
introduced into the online monitoring system, which is a bridge between physical
layer and application layer. Finally, application in online monitoring system proved
the validity of the framework. From this framework we came to know that the
requirements of the equipment are used in the technology and we can also monitor
system wide changes.

INTRODUCTION:
The Internet of Things refers to uniquely identifiable objects and their virtual
representations in an Internet-like structure. The term Internet of Things was
proposed by Kevin Ashton in 1999. The concept of the Internet of Things first
became popular through the Auto-ID Center at MIT and related market analysis
publications. Radio-frequency identification (RFID) was seen as a prerequisite for the
Internet of Things in the early days. If all objects and people in daily life were
equipped with identifiers, they could be managed and inventoried by computers.
Besides using RFID, the tagging of things may be achieved through such
technologies as near field communication, barcodes, QR codes and digital
watermarking. Internet of things is a kind of network that connecting any items to
the internet according to the agreed protocol by using various sensing devices.
From a technical architecture perspective, IOT can be divided into physical layer,
network layer and application layer. IOT contains variety kinds of sensor type and
data transmission protocol which makes the network of IOT being a heterogeneous
network.
Continuous casting equipment is widely used in the iron and steel metallurgy
industry. It can improve the production efficiency, reduce consumption and waste of
the material greatly, so with the growing need of continuous casting equipment,
demand of MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) service for the continuous
casting equipment is rising. To provide better failure prediction, timely repair and
maintenance for the equipment, an online monitoring system based on IOT sensing
technology and communication technology is needed to monitor production
environmental parameters and running state parameter of the equipment.
However, the system contains variety kinds of sensor (such as temperature sensor,
pressure sensor, speed sensor, etc.), which will cause us problems when we tackling
with large amount of heterogeneous data, multi-transport protocols and integrating
data with applications in upper layer. To solve these problems, a data processing
framework is introduced into the online monitoring system, which is a bridge
between physical layer and application layer. The framework will help us deal with

problems of handling multiple data protocols, data filtering, data processing and
data integration in the system, thus it is convenient for us to reveal low coupling
between the perception layer and the application layer.

WORKING PRINCIPLE:
Many technologies and methods have been used in IOT based system to
achieve the smart management and processing of the data. The key section of data
processing includes data acquisition, data storage, data inquiry, and data analysis.
In this project, a data processing framework is applied in the online monitoring
system to deal with massive number of heterogeneous data collected from the
underlying physical layer.
The framework is divided into a structure of layers, Device Layer consists of various
kinds of sensors which are used to measure parameters (such as temperature,
pressure, etc.) of the equipment. It is at the bottom logic structure of the system.
The original data collection and system command are realized in this layer. Physical
layer is made up of data transmission devices using different kinds of physical
transmission methods and protocols (such as Zigbee, RFID, etc.) due to different
application environment and different needs. It is in charge of communication
between the device layer and its upper layers.
The controller is interfaced with a RFID card reader which is used for authentication
purpose. As soon as the RFID card is tapped the system sends a packet of data
consisting of various kinds of information such as the temperature and gas
concentration of the surrounding environment. This data is transmitted wirelessly
via the Zigbee to the host system.
The host system receives the data via the Zigbee receiver connected to it and does
the further processing and updates it to the server for database storage and display.

ADVANTAGES:

Provides real-time accurate environmental parameters

Help us to provide better fault prediction and timely repair
