I turned my
passion into
my business
When Nikki Channon,
44, tired of her old career,
she and her husband
combined their favourite
hobbies and found
the opportunity to live
their dream life
s a professional
singer, Id been
performing in a duo
with my husband,
Jason, for ten years.
But as I hopped around on the wet
floor of yet another pub toilet trying to
change into my posh frock, I couldnt
help thinking there had to be more
to life. We didnt have any kids (just
two naughty beagles!) and Id always
wanted to move to the country. Jason
felt the same, but we needed to fund
it and thats when we decided to take
the things we were most passionate
about and turn them into a business.
Ive always enjoyed entertaining
I get such a buzz from seeing
everyone enjoying themselves and
knowing I made it happen. Our
home in Weston-super-Mare was
always full of people, laughter and
music. Jason, on the other hand, gets
his fun from mountain-biking. As
an ex-army man, hes super fit and
started biking around ten years ago.
An idea came to us when we
went skiing in France. We stayed in
the most fantastic chalet and after
skiing all day, wed return to lovely
meals cooked by the staff. The

more we thought about it, the more
we realised that no one was doing
anything comparable in the UK
and if we combined that style of
hospitality with mountain biking,
wed have our business. All we had
to do was find the right place to kick
off MudTrek Mountain Bike Breaks.
Our target area was Wales, as it
has great mountain-bike tracks. In
spring 2009 we found a 250-yearold farmhouse on the edge of Brechfa
Forest in Carmarthenshire. It had
stunning views, was beautifully isolated
and the mountain-bike trails nearby
were world-renowned. We knew wed
found the perfect spot and moved
there in May, but it took us two years
to complete the renovations. We had
to graft night and day to turn the
70s-style interiors into the welcoming
space were now so proud of.
At the same time
Jason and I were still
driving all over the
country to gigs, so
we could pay the
bills. Jason built a
website for the
business and we set up a Facebook
page we were off the ground!
We welcomed our first guests to
the barns in August 2011. We were
very nervous and excited I had
visualised it for so long that it all felt
a bit surreal. Of course, we didnt
tell our visitors they were the first,
but they know now and, thank
goodness, theyve come back since.
Entertaining large groups of
mountain bikers quickly became
second nature. We found lots come
to get away from high-pressure jobs
and to enjoy the amazing scenery,
so we do everything we can to
create a welcoming, relaxed vibe.
I think this would be a tough job if
you werent a people person, but
we both love to socialise. Im no

Friday
Why cant I hear about the good fortune
of others without feeling that my life is
lagging behind? Today a friend tells me
that shes finally exchanged on her new
house. Im happy for her, of course, but the
news adds to the life envy which I have
trouble shaking off.
Bridget explains that comparing
ourselves to others is one of the most
common characteristics of pessimism,
and a real barrier to well-being. Here
I must use distraction.
So, rather than logging onto a property
website and tormenting myself with
houses I couldnt ever afford, I grab my
bike and cycle up to the shops, instead. By
the time I arrive home 40 minutes later,
my head is surprisingly clear.
Today is also the day I start my gratitude
journal. Bridget says writing down good
things that happen will help me see the
upsides of my life. In my pretty new
notebook I wrote how the short bike ride
enabled me to appreciate the area where
I live, how I am grateful that were all well
again after a plague of sickness bugs, and
finally how hearing my two kids giggling in
the bath this evening made me wish I could
bottle that sound and keep it forever.
Maybe life isnt so bad after all.

Weekends often wind me up: the mess, the
noise, the no-time-to-myself. Why cant
I just enjoy the precious two days my
husband, Gray, our children and I have
together? Its time to put some optimism
tactics to the test.
When my five-year-old daughter, Isla,
starts whining, I remember Bridgets
mantra: enjoy the here and now. I must

Were driving to friends for lunch when
Gray mentions the cars now done more
than 80,000 miles. Oh, no, I groan
instinctively, then immediately check myself.
Bridget told me to be more aware of
negative thoughts as
they happen. Just by
stopping for a second,
I realise that comment
was unnecessary, as the
car is running well.
Arriving home later, Ive had a lovely day
chatting with old friends and seeing our
kids playing together. Im starting to see
that becoming positive isnt about
changing my life or who I am. Its more to
do with looking with fresh eyes at the good
stuff right in front of me.
Before bed, I make a list of activities Ive
enjoyed doing over the years, like going to
the fairground or watching French films. The
aim is to do something from the list each
day. Ill put it to the test tomorrow.
Wednesday
I know my negativity can affect others
around me, especially my husband, so
I resolve to be positive this evening and see
what a difference it makes to both of us.
Then Gray phones to say he missed his
train by seconds and wont be home until
later. Instead of my usual angry reaction,
I take a deep breath and suggest he stops
for a beer in the station bar.
He texts a little later, saying thanks.
While Im waiting for him, I choose all my
favourite photos and create a montage of
family pictures on my
computer. I show Gray
when he gets home
and then save it as my
computer wallpaper.
Now every time I switch

I actually feel much more positive. Ive
put a happy playlist on my iPod, done
some homework to focus on what Im

of the things that make me smile.
But what Ive really learnt from all this

It takes a bit of effort, but is definitely
worth it. While still not overflowing with

things are very different. A recent report
revealed that stepfamilies are the fastest
growing type of family in the UK with one
in ten being a stepfamily. And whats even
more surprising is that one in three of us
is a step-parent, stepchild, stepsibling or
even a stepgrandparent. So does that
mean were now better prepared to take
on the role? Not necessarily.
Jealous emotions
Laura Williams is a 38-year-old florist from
London. Three years ago she moved in with
her boyfriend James who had joint custody
of his seven-year-old daughter Gemma.
Of all the emotions Laura expected to face,
jealousy wasnt one of them.
James and Gemma shared an incredible
bond which, if Im honest, I felt threatened
by, says Laura. Theyd talk about people
I didnt know and shed sometimes whisper
things in his ear when there were just
three of us at the dinner table. I felt like
an outsider in my own home.
Fortunately, talking through her insecurities
with James made Laura realise she had
nothing to worry about. James gave me
space so that Gemma and I could get to
know each other and over time we did
enough things together to have our own
in-jokes. Now shes ten and we regularly
go shopping without her dad.
Jealousy is a common feeling among
step-parents and its obvious why. As a
stepmum youve known your new husband
for less time than his kids have. They have
lots of memories of good times that you
didnt share and they have routines that
you havent learnt yet. Its hard, but not
impossible to deal with.
Katharine Hill, the UK director of
Care For The Family, which offers
relationship support, says its worth
thinking through any potential problems
and solutions before they arise.
Many people approach a new stepfamily
thinking it will be the same as a traditional
family, so when issues come along it takes
them by surprise. But there are lots of

the problem area to improve circulation,
treat fluid retention and rejuvenate your

Radiant skin
The reason your skin looks
glowing in summer sunshine is
down to simple physics. Bright
sunlight gives the surface of your skin
a translucent quality as it bounces off
the top. So, what do you do when the
sun dips down for autumn? You can
fake the same effect by using a serum
with light-reflecting particles. We
love Wild About Beauty Rose Water
Illuminating Serum, 22. To

Faux tan
tips & tricks
If youve been away on holiday and
want to prolong your tan for as long as
possible, theres no better product
than Lancaster Legendary Tan,
30. Not only does it contain a
very clever tan activator complex,
which stimulates melanin (the tan
making pigment) in your skin, but its oil
base is so hydrating that youll keep
peeling at bay for longer. Plus, it has a
subtle golden shimmer that gives a
serious depth to your tan. If you
havent been lucky enough to get a
natural tan, then its time to fake it.
LOral Paris Sublime Bronze
Self-Tanning Fresh Feel Gel, 12.19,
creates a gorgeous caramel tan that
allows your natural skintone to shine
through. Its also time to get out the
blusher but it has to be apricot
toned. A strange optical illusion occurs
to your skin with apricot blusher, the
peachiness of the blush makes the rest
of your skin look warmer and healthier.
Our favourite has to be Bourjois
Blush in Healthy Mix, 7.49.

Now, were not claiming that by
wearing a bright lipstick the sun is

REPORT
4 Keep an eye on
your blood pressure
1 Get moving
Experts are increasingly concerned
about the amount of time we spend
sitting with a study by Kansas State
University warning that office
workers who spend more than four
hours a day sitting are at greater risk
of cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
MAKE THE CHANGE If 150 minutes
of physical activity a week seems
like a lot, try breaking it down into
10-minute sessions during the day
and build up from there, advises Amy
Thompson, senior cardiac nurse at BHF.
2 Stub it out
Smokers are twice as likely to develop
heart disease as non-smokers. But
giving up smoking in middle age or
beyond still has benefits. Smokers
who gave up later in life experienced
a 40% reduction in the risk of heart
attack and stroke within five years.
MAKE THE CHANGE Order your free
Quit Kit at smokefree.nhs.uk.
3 Check your
cholesterol
In the UK, two out of three adults over
40 have raised cholesterol levels,
which can cause arteries to harden
and narrow. This can eventually block
blood flow, causing a heart attack.
MAKE THE CHANGE Choose products
with plant sterols and stenols, such
as Benecol and Flora Pro. Activ,
which have been shown to have a
cholesterol-busting effect. And check
out the Ultimate Cholesterol Lowering
Plan at alproplus.com.

5 Go Med
Eating a Mediterranean-style diet
can cut heart attacks, strokes and
death rates in people at high risk of
heart disease by as much as a third,
according to a major Spanish trial.
Meanwhile, Swedish researchers who
studied the eating habits of 1,200
people over 70 found that those
following a Mediterranean-style diet
tended to live for two or three years
longer. Its thought the antioxidants
in fruit and vegetables, fish and olive
oil fight cancer and heart disease.
MAKE THE CHANGE The European
Society of Cardiology recommends
that people should eat two portions of
fish a week to prevent heart disease.
One of these should be oily fish, such as
salmon, mackerel or sardine, as these
contain the highest levels of omega 3
fatty acids. Dont like fish? Take a
pharmaceutical grade supplement
containing 1g of omega 3.

Embarrassing
problems
you should
never ignore
Many of us are too ashamed
to seek help for certain
health-related conditions.
But dont be your GP has
seen and heard it all before!
ore than 50% of UK adults admitted
putting up with a problem because they
found it embarrassing, according to a
recent poll*. And only 23% of women
said they would see their GP to get it checked,
compared to 41% of men. Yet doctors insist they
have seen and heard it all before. Talking about
embarrassing symptoms is something that we do
every day, says Dr Penelope Ward, a GP from Glasgow.
Youre providing essential clues for us to determine
if there is an underlying problem we can help with.

EXCESSIVE SWEATING
The problem
Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) sufferers produce
four to five times the normal amount of sweat per day,
explains Dr Pixie McKenna, of Channel 4s Embarrassing
Bodies (drpixie.com). Primary hyperhidrosis is where
the sweating occurs on the palms of hands, soles of
feet, under the arms and on the face while secondary
hyperhidrosis is sweating all over the body.
The solution
Use an antiperspirant that contains aluminium
chloride, like Driclor (4.79 from pharmacies),

YOUR HEALTH

The problem
Its normal to produce a clear or white vaginal
discharge, but if you experience a change to the
colour, consistency or smell; an itch or pain in your
abdomen; or unexpected bleeding, then you should
see your GP or nurse. Causes include thrush (a fungal
infection often accompanied by an itch, and creamy
discharge); bacterial vaginosis (an overgrowth of
vaginal bacteria sometimes caused by using
perfumed bath products); sexually transmitted
infections, like chlamydia and gonorrhoea; or
forgetting to remove a tampon, says Dr Ward.
The solution
The solution
Regular pelvic floor exercises will cure the problem
in three out of four cases, says Dr Harper. If youre
unsure how to exercise, your GP can refer you to a
physiotherapist or incontinence advisor. If theres no
improvement, they can offer you specialist techniques
including vaginal cones or electrical stimulation.
Occasionally, surgery may be required. One non-invasive
technique uses tension-free vaginal tape and can be
done under local anaesthetic.
BAD BREATH
The problem
PILES
The solution
The problem
The most common cause of piles (haemorrhoids) is
constipation. The more you strain to pass stools, the
more pressure you put on the blood vessels, which
then form lumps. Pregnancy can also cause piles due
to the added pressure on the veins from the baby.
They can occur inside or outside the anus and
symptoms include blood from your anus, discomfort
after going to the toilet, and a slimy mucus discharge.
The solution
Piles will often settle down on their own after a few
days, says Dr Ward. A high-fibre diet with plenty of
fruit and vegetables, drinking water, exercise and
maintaining a healthy weight will help reduce the risk
of constipation and straining. There are, however,
a number of over-the-counter creams and
suppositories to help reduce the discomfort. These
can be used for up to seven days at a time. In rare
instances, piles may need to be surgically removed.
INCONTINENCE
The problem
There are different types of urinary incontinence,
but the most common is stress incontinence,
explains Dr Dawn Harper of Embarrassing Bodies
(drdawn.com). Its caused by a weakening of the
pelvic floor muscles, which hold the bladder in place
due to pregnancy, birth, hormones and certain
essentialsmagazine.com
FLATULENCE
The problem
The usual culprit is swallowing more air than usual, or
eating food that is difficult to digest, says Dr Ward.
This causes the bacteria living in your gut to produce
gas. If the food takes a long time to digest, it can start
to decompose and release sulphur a foul-smelling
gas. Beans, Brussels sprouts, lentils and prunes are
triggers for this, but you should also be wary of
slimming products containing sorbitol or fructose.
The solution
Choose carbs that are easily absorbed like potatoes
and rice, and avoid swallowing air so no gum or
smoking. Eat slowly and take exercise, which aids
digestion. Sometimes the cause can be a health
condition affecting your digestive tract. If you suffer
with persistent abdominal pain, unexplained weight
loss, blood in your stools or recurring episodes of
diarrhoea or constipation, see your GP, says Dr Ward.

ROAST
Dont skimp
on salt its vital to
give you a crispyskinned bird.
78
WHEN IS IT DONE?
The easiest way to tell is to insert
a meat thermometer into the
thickest part of the thigh. You need
to have a temperature of 80C.
Or insert a knife or skewer into
the thickest part of the thigh.
If the juices run clear its cooked.
If you still arent sure, pull the leg
away from the breast the meat
should be opaque and almost white.
RESTING
Always leave to stand after
roasting to allow the meat to relax
and juices to distribute evenly.
MAKE STOCK
Strip the leftover meat from the
carcass, then put the carcass in a
large pan with a carrot, onion and
celery stick, cover with cold water
and barely simmer for 2 hrs.
Reduce to concentrate the avour,
then freeze in ice cube trays. Use
instead of stock cubes.

The problem Youve employed a

2 My online buy
was rubbish!
The problem You bought clothes
online, but arent happy with them.
Your rights Theyre the same as
when you buy from a shop, but
when shopping online, you have
seven working days from delivery
to return the item for a full refund.
There are some exceptions to this,
like fresh food and flowers.
Take action If theres a fault, call
the retailer and ask for a refund,
including delivery/return charges.
TIP Your rights when shopping online apply to
mail order or buying from a TV channel, too.
3 My new machine
has broken down
THE PROBLEM Your lovely brandnew dishwasher starts leaking water
one month after buying it arrrgh!
YOUR RIGHTS The thing to quote
is the Sale of Goods Act 1979,
which mean goods sold must be of
satisfactory quality, fit for purpose
and as described. If the product has
been used for a few months before a
fault occurs, you may lose your right
to a full refund, but you can still ask
what other options are available.

dodgy car from an ad
THE PROBLEM The car you bought
privately breaks down after a few months.
YOUR RIGHTS When buying from a private
seller, you lose your rights for a product to
be of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose.
TAKE ACTION This is a case of buyer beware
and usually little can be done. The car
must be roadworthy when sold , so if the
seller wont offer a refund, contact CAB
(the Citizens Advice Bureau) for help.
TIP When buying a car privately, have the
vehicle checked. Both The AA and RAC offer
this service, from 123-300.

YOUR SUMMER
Dont want to get your winter clothes out of the wardrobe
yet? Septembers the ideal time to go away youll pay less
and avoid the crowds
Croatia
Croatias rocky coast on the Adriatic is perfect in September.
Take a tip and head for the island of Hvar, where the pretty
main town was built from white limestone by the Venetians,
and the countryside is made up of acre upon acre of beautiful
lavender fields. In high summer, its a glam party island, but
come September the pace of life on the island becomes gentler,
the daytime temperature mellows to early 20s and there are
still some great bars open Carpe Diem on the waterfront is
recommended for its chilled out atmosphere. Essentially
Prestige (prestigeholidays.co.uk/croatia) is offering a weeks
stay in September at the Amfora Grand from 1,419 for two
adults. The price includes bed and breakfast in a Superior
room and flights on EasyJet from London Stansted.

Egypt
In Makadi Bay, a short drive from Hurghada
airport, sits a slice of luxury and tranquillity in
the shape of the Makadi Spa. Arrive to a
chilled fruit punch and youll know straight
away that every whim is catered for at this
brand-new, all-inclusive complex. Choose
from the pretty beach or one of several
pools to lounge away the days and, yes,
waiters will regularly bring you drinks. Heaven!
For the more adventurous, this area is
famous for its excellent diving, or why not
try a little yoga or pilates. There is a choice
of restaurants from tapas to Asian cuisine,
plus a gorgeous bar overlooking the floodlit
pool at night. You might even get a taste for
the local wine! Seven nights at the Makadi
Spa Hotel start at 805 per person,
all-inclusive and including flights, with Red
Sea Holidays (redseaholidays.co.uk).
Crete
The largest of the Greek islands, Crete is a smart choice for a
September break. The weather is lovely and sea temperatures are at
their warmest. Elounda, a pretty fishing village in the northeast, makes
an ideal base to explore and its where youll find the Blue Palace
Resort & Spa, a real beauty of a hotel. There are over 100 pools in
this private complex, most of which are adorable little infinity plunge
pools right outside your bedroom glorious! The hotel is high-end,
but never stuffy, with three restaurants and fantastic views all around
the bay. Thomson (thomson.co.uk) offers seven nights at the 5T A la
Carte Blue Palace Resort & Spa on a bed and breakfast basis, from
972 per person. This is based on two adults sharing, and includes
flights departing from London Luton on 29 September 2013.

Madeira
Less than four hours from the UK, Madeira is a gardeners
paradise, with its year-round pleasant temperatures. In fact,
exotic blooms like agapanthus grow wild by the roadside, in the
way that weeds do here. Funchal, the islands capital, has a quaint
Old Town, plus a cable car which ascends 2,000ft up to the
town of Monte. Or try the Levanda dos Tornos, a picturesque
trek which meanders through eucalyptus forests and quaint
villages, before ending up in the botanical gardens. LateRooms.
