bestofall,vacations!Inmyycase,aholidayIwouldneverforgetisafruitfuloneIexpereincedfiveyearsago,
wheremyfamilyIspentsixdaysinthelandofKPopand'kimchi'Korea.
Finally,afteragesofwaiting,ourfamilyarrivedinbeautifulKorea.Steppingoutoftheplane,wecouldfeel
thechillyweathertoourbones.Neverexperiencingthatkindofweather,mysiblingsandIweretotallyexcited.
Passingthroughimmigrationandbaggageclaim,weweretalkinganimatedlyaboutournewsurroundings.Since
wewentwithtourgroup,weknewwewereingoodhands.
Incidentnumberone.Weweresupposedtotakeabustocheckinatthehotel,asinstructed.IguessedI
wasovereagerandwithoutthinking.Irantoarandombusandknockedonthedoor.Theyoungbusdriver
openedthedoorandlookedatmewithapuzzledexpression.HestartedaskingmesomethinginKorean,whichof
courseIdidnotunderstand.ItriedtoreplyinEnglish,butbeforeIcouldmaketheattempt,myfatherquickly
apologizedtothedriverandwalkedmebacktothetourgroupwhowaswatchingfromafar,shakingwith
laughter.ItturnedoutthatthebusIwasrunningtowasnotthebusweweresupposedtotake.Idismissedmy
burningcheeks.IwasgladIcouldbethebuttofeveryone'sjokesonmyfirstdayinaforeigncountry.
Itwasabitpastlunchtimewhenweweredonecheckinginourhotel.Notdoubt,everybody'sstomachs
weregrumbling.ThankGodaftercheckingin,weweregoingtohaveourlunchanddoabitofsightseeing.While
waitingfortheothersoutsidethehotel,wewalkedaroundnearby.Therewasarowofvendingmachinesthatsold
varioussnacksandbeverages,includingHaagenDazsicecream,andinstantnoodles.Mymotherhadacraving
forNescafe,soshespentherfirstKorreanmoneyonthat.
Attherestaurant,adeliciousmealwasalreadyspreadoutforus.Thatwasthefirsttimewealltriedkimchi,
aspicyandsourvegetablesidedish.Ididnotthinkitwashorrible,buutIpreferredthefishkimchimuchbetter.
Weallateusingchopsticks,sothatwaskindorawkwardformeandmysiblings,aswewerenotskilledatusing
themyet.BeingMalaysians,wewereusedtorice,soitwasagoodthingthattheKoreanmealincludedriceanda
fewothersidedish,eatenfromaBentobox.Itwasweirdthough,thericewasstickiercomparedtothericewe
eatathome,mainlytomakeiteasiertoeatusingchopsticks.Therewasalsohotandscumptiousmisosoup
togetherwiththemeal.Sincemysisterandmybrotherdidnotlikeitmuch,Ifinsheduptheirs.Igulpedthewarm
soupdownmythroataniceconnntrastfromtheshiveringweatheroutside.
OneofthehighlightsofouractivitiesthatwedidinKoreawasskiling.Everybodyfromthetourgroupwas
lookingforwardtothat,eventhe52yearoldcoupletravelingwithus.Sinceitwas'ntfullysnownigyet,thehill
wascoverredwithartificialsnow.Aftergrobbingourskigear,welistentoabriefingbytheinstructor.Hewasvery
helpful,especiallywithuskidsanndtheelderlycouple.
Feelingjumpyandhyperactive,meandmysistermadeourwaytothecablecarandsuccessfullyskied
downaslope.Ithought,"We'renaturalatthis,"andmysistercouldnotagreemore.Whenwecametoseehow
ourparentsandbrotherweredoing,mybrotherstartedtothrowasnowballtowardsmeandmysister.Ithitme,
andwestartedhavingasmallsnowballfightofourown,justlikeinthemovies!Iguessedwegotabitoutofhand
andmysisteraccidentallyhitawoman'sback.whensheturnedaround,shehadthisangrylookonherfaceand
startedtowalktowardsus.Ihurriedmysiblingstocontinueskiingwithourparents,andweranawaybeforeshe
coldcatchus.Breathless,wegiggledinnaivetyaswerecappedthemoment.
Inaway,skiingislikeswimming.WhydoIsayso?Well,whenswimming,youdonotfeeltired,butyou
wouldseetheeffectwhenyougetravenousandeatmoreafterasessionorwhenyouaintendtotkeanap,butit
isextendedtolonghours.Thesamegoestoskiing.Whenwearrivedatthehotelafterskiing,weweredrained
outandstarving.Instantnoodlessavedtheday!WeallatecurryflavouredMaggitogether,savouringthe
memontarypleasure.Wealsodozedoffquiteearlythatnight,rightaftergoingforawalktoenjoytheamazing
nightviewofthmountains,andbreathingthecool,freshwinterair.
ShoppinginKoreawasalsodifferentcomparedtoMalaysia.Itsmallswerepackedwithsmallshopsorstalla
oneveryfloor.Bigboutiqueswerenotseenasmuchasthequaintkiosks.Nevertheless,Ifoundshoppingattheir
