St Mark - the Holy, Glorious and All Laudable Apostle of Christ and Evangelist is
the Divinely Inspired Author of the second Book of the Holy Gospels.
He was the companion and co-worker of St Paul, the great Holy Apostle to the
Gentiles, which is noted in St Lukes Book of the Acts of the Apostles.
St Mark is one of our Lord Jesus Christs 70 Apostles, whom He sent forth in pairs
to prepare the way for His Divine Mission on Earth.
He is often referred to as St John Mark, and is the Founder of the Holy Church of
Alexandria and All Africa, being our First Bishop, Pope and Patriarch.
Furthermore, St Mark is highly regarded and venerated by the Coptic Orthodox
Church, as its Founder as well.
The symbols that represent St Mark as one of the Four Holy Evangelists of Christ
is the lion.
We Commemorate St Mark on 25 April, 27 September with St Aristarchos and St
Zenas, 30 October with St Tertios, St Justos, St Artemas and St Cleopas, and
on 4 January the Feast of the Synaxis of the Seventy Apostles of Christ our
Lord and Saviour.
St Marks name was John: ... He went to the house of Mary, the mother of John
whose surname was Mark, where many were gathered together praying...
(ACTS 12:12)
St Mark was the one to whom our Lord Jesus Christ referred when He said: Go
into the city to a certain man, and say to him: The Teacher says: My Time
is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your house with My Disciples...
(MATTHEW 26 : 18)
The home of St Mark and his mother, Mary, was the first Christian church,
where the Faithful Apostles and Disciples of Christ at the Passover meal and
where they hid in fear of the persecution of the Judeans who wanted to
arrest and punish them for their association with our Lord Jesus Christ.
It was also in the Upper Room of St Marks home that the Holy Spirit came upon
them, granting them all the Divine Gifts, Power and Knowledge necessary
for the spreading of the Holy Gospel of Christ throughout the known world
as our Saviour had Promised them: ...when the Counsellor comes Whom I
shall sent to you from the Father even the Spirit of Truth, Who Proceeds
from the Father He will bear Witness to Me...
St Mark had been born in Cyrene (one of the 5 Western cities Pentapolis in
North Africa) to his parents, Aristopolos and Mary, who was related to St
Barnabas, the Apostle of Christ.
They were faithful, wealthy and honourable Judeans who were held in high
regard by the various ethnic groups of citizens.
St Mark was thoroughly educated in both Greek and Hebrew cultures and
began to be named Mark, after the family immigrated to Jerusalem,
where St (Simon) Peter had become a Disciple and Apostle of our Lord Jesus
Christ.
St Peter was married to a cousin of Aristopolos, so St Mark often visited the home
of the Holy Apostle, where he soon learnt all the Christian Teachings of the
New Covenant.
One day while St Mark and his father, Aristopolos, were waling nar the Jordan
River, close to the desert, they suddently encountered a lion and lioness,
which caused Aristopolos to fear that they would be attacked and killed.
He ordered his beloved son to try to escape but to his utter astonishment, St
Mark calmly replied: Christ, in Whose Hands our lives are committed, will
not let them prey on us, and having said these words to encourage his
father, St Mark then prayed to our Lord: O Christ, Son of God: Protect us

from the evil of these two beasts and terminate their offspring from this
wilderness.
Immediately God granted his Prayer, and the two ravenous lions fell down
dead.
Aristopolos was amazed by what he had just witnessed and he asked his son to
tell him all about Jesus Christ.
Subsequently, Aristopolos believed in our Saviour, accepted completely the
New Covenant of God and received Holy Baptism at the hands of his
beloved son.
After the Ascension of our Lord, St Mark accompanied St Paul and St Barnabas
to teach and preach the Holy Gospel, to Heal those who were physically
and spiritually afflicted and to Baptise those who joyfully accepted and
believed in Christ and the New Covenant of God.
They travelled vast distances throughout Antioch, Seleucia, Cyprus, Salamis,
and Perga Pamphylia, where St Mark left St Paul and St Barnabas, to return
to Jerusalem.
After the Apostolic Council in Jerusalem, St Mark accompanied St Barnabas
once again to Cyprus.
After the Repose of St Barnabas, St Mark returned to Africa to berka and to the
five Western cities of Pentepolis.
He continued to Teach, Preach, Heal and Baptise in the Name of our Lord and
Saviour Jesus Christ and according to the New Covenant of Almighty God
a Most Holy, Blessed and Bloodless Covenant of unconditional Love that led
so many multitudes to Divine Truth and the Love of God.
In 61 St Mark returned to the great city of Alexandria where he sought a good
cobbler to mend his worn out sandals that had carried him over vast
distances throughout the years of his Holy Mission.
And so it was that St Mark met the humble cobbler (shoe-maker) Anianos who,
while repairing the sandals, pierced his finger with the sharp awl and cried
out: Is Theos! (meaning: O One God!)
The Holy Apostle took some clay, spat on it, and applied it to Anianos finger,
praying: In the Name of Jesus Christ the Son of God! whereupon the
wound was immediately healed as if nothing had happened to it.
Anianos was utterly astonished by such a Divine Miracle that occurred in the
Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, and his heart instantly opened to the Word of
God to receive the Divine Truth.
When St Mark asked the Cobbler Who was the Only God to Whom he had
cried out in his terrible pain, Anianos answered: I heard about Him, but I
do not know Him.
There and then, St Mark began to teach Anianos everything concerning our
Triune, Living and Loving, Almighty God from the Creation of Heaven and
Earth, all the way to the Holy Prophecies that had foretold the Coming of
Christ our Lord and Saviour.
Anianos invited St Mark to his home where he introduced the Apostle to his
family who also joyfully received all the Teachings he gave them and
when they so eagerly accepted our Lord as their Saviour, he duly Baptised
them in the Name of the Holy Trinity having taught them everything that
Christ has revealed and taught us.
The Faithful Christians rapidly increased in that great city of Alexandria but, of
course, when the pagans realised what was happening how many
people had rejected the man-made, dead idols and accepted the Living,
Loving and All Powerful God they began to severely persecute them and
they plotted against St Mark who had brought about such a significant
change to their society, blaming him for drawing the people away from the
pagan gods which was detrimental to the wealth of the temple priests and
priestesses.

The Faithful Christians advised St Mark to leave Alexandria for a while, for the
sake of the safety of the Church and its Holy Flock.
St Mark then ordained St Anianos as Bishop of Alexandria, as well as three
Priests and seven Deacons, before departing for Pentapolis where he
remained for two years, all the while preaching, teaching, Baptising and
Ordaining more Bishop, Priests and Deacons.
Eventually St Mark return to Alexandria where the Holy Flock of Christ has
greatly increased, necessitating the erection of another church at Bokalia
(the place of cows), situated East of Alexandria on the sea shore.
In 68 while celebrating Holy Pascha the Great Feast of the Glorious
Resurrection of Christ our Lord the pagans also celebrated the festival of
their lifeless God, Syrabis.
A huge multitude of pagans, stirred up by the jealous, envious temple priests,
attacked the church at Bokalia, forcing their way inside and seizing St Mark
who stood before the Holy Altar in the Sanctuary.
They bound the aged Apostle with thick ropes and dragged him through the
streets, yelling: "Drag the dragon to the place of cows!" They continued
dragging him with severe cruelty. His flesh was torn and scattered
everywhere, and the ground of the city was covered with his blood. That
night they cast him into a dark prison cell.
A Holy Angel of our Lord appeared before St Mark and said: "O Mark, the Good
Servant, rejoice! for Thy name has been written in the Book of Life, and
Thou hast been counted among the Congregation of the Saints."
As the Holy Angel of God disappeared, our Lord Jesus Christ appeared before
St Mark and granted him Peace and Courage, which overhwhelmed his
soul with indescribable Love, Joy and Peace.
The next morning, the executions dragged St Mark out of the prison cell
continuing their hideous brutality of the previous day, until, at last, St Mark
surrendered his Sanctified soul to our Beloved Lord God, having received
the Victorious Crown of Holy Martyrdom.
Nevertheless, the death of St Mark did not satisfy the evil rage of the pagan
priests and their minions, who gathered much firewood and prepared an
inferno to burn his Holy Relics.
However, a severe storm suddenly arose and blew away the heaped up wood,
and a heavy deluge of rain flooded the area to such a degree that the
godless idolaters fled in abject terror of the Powerful, Almighty God of the
Christians.
The Faithful Disciples of Christ were then able to reverently carry the Holy Relics
of St Mark the Holy Apostle and Faithful Evangelist of Christ to the church at
Bokalia, where they prepared him for burial and finally laid him to rest in a
secret place within that Holy Temple of Almighty God.
In 828 the Sanctified Body of St Mark was stolen by Italian sailors from
Alexandria and taken to Venice, Italy.
However, the venerable head of St Mark, remained in Alexandria.
May his memory be Eternal and may St Mark ceaselessly Intercede with our
Most Beloved Lord and Master for the sake of the Salvation of our soul.
Christ
