SUNDAY

OF THE

BELIEF

OF

ST THOMAS

Sunday after Holy Pascha Antepascha or the Second Sunday of Holy

Pascha is the Sunday of the Belief of St Thomas.
Historically, this was the day when the Newly Baptised Christians removed
their white Baptism Robes and entered once again our earthly life.
Today is referred to as Antipascha which does not mean opposed to
Pascha but rather in place of Pascha.
Beginning with this first Sunday After Pascha, the Church dedicates every
Sunday of the year to our Lord Jesus Christs Glorious Resurrection.
In fact, the word for Sunday in Russian is Resurrection Day and in Greek,
The Lords Day.
So, every Sunday of the year in the Eastern Orthodox Christian Church is
dedicated to our Lords Resurrection, beginning with today, which is the
Eighth day of the Paschal celebration the Last Day of Bright Week.
Liturgically, the Holy Church of Christ remembers St Thomas the Apostle of
Christ and our Resurrected Lord Jesus Who invited St Thomas to ... put
your finger here and see My Wrists1 and put out your hand, and
place it in My Side. And do not be faithless, but believing.
And St Thomas responded with all his Love for Christ: My Lord and my
God!
Then our Saviour comments: You have believed because you have seen
Me. Blessed are those who have not seen, yet believe!
As with all the Holy Paschal Services until the Feast of Ascension, the Paschal
Troparion is sung: Hristos Anesti, ek nekron...
The Epistle Readings are from St Lukes Book of the Acts of the Apostles,
which relate how the first Christians lived in Communion with our
Resurrected Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Finally, the Holy Gospel Readings are from the Holy Gospel According to St
John the Beloved Apostle, Theologian and Evangelist, which is
considered as have been written particularly for the Newly Baptised
Christians.

Thou renew a right spirit in us,

THE DIVINE LITURGY OF ST JOHN CHRYSOSTOM BEGINS IMMEDIATELY

St Thomas was born in the Galileian city of Pansada and was a fisherman.
When he heard all the Good Tidings of our Lord Jesus Christ, he left
everything and followed Him.
According to Holy Scripture, St Thomas did not believe the reports of the
other Faithful Disciples and Apostles of Christ regarding His Glorious
Resurrection, for he always needed to establish the Truth of everything
for himself, which is why our Lord gave him the nickname Didymos
the Twin, meaning that he was always double-minded and had to
examine everything more than once before accepting it as Truth.
Hence his statement: "Unless I see in His Wrists the print of the nails, and put
my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into His Side, I
will not believe." ( John 20:25).
On the Eighth Day after the Resurrection our Resurrected Lord Jesus Christ
appeared again to His Apostles this time specifically for the benefit of
St Thomas, who had not been present on previous occasions.

The Greek word for hands and wrists is the same. The Roman executioners nailed their
victims through the gap between the many bones of the wrists that then was able to suspend
the weight of the entire body, which added to the indescribable agony of crucifixion and its
slow asphyxiation.

OF

ST THOMAS 19 APRIL 2015

Our Saviour not only showed him His Wounds, but invited St Thomas to
examine them closely to touching and feeling them.
However, it was unnecessary for him to do so, because with all his heart
and soul, St Thomas confessed his Faith in Christ by exclaiming: "My
Lord and my God!" (John 20:28).
St John Chrysostom commented: "St Thomas, being once weaker in Faith
than the other Apostles, toiled - by the Grace of God - more bravely,
more zealously and more tirelessly than them all, so that he went
preaching over nearly all the Earth - not fearing to proclaim the Word of
God to savage Nations."
Some Holy Icons depicting this Event are inscribed in English: "The
Doubting Thomas."
However, this is totally is incorrect and unjustified.
In Greek, the inscription reads: "The Touching of Thomas."
In Slavonic, it says, "The Belief of Thomas."
Without actually touching the Wounds of our Lord, St Thomas no longer had
any doubts whatsoever.
Furthermore, the erroneous nickname of "Doubting Thomas" conveys the
false impression of St Thomas as being timid, lacking the full conviction
of Faith, or even being cowardly.
Nevertheless, this false concept of St Thomas is neither historical nor
Biblical, except in consideration of the time before the vitally important
moment when St Thomas confessed his profound Faith in the
Resurrected Christ.
The momentary fluctuation of Faith that was spectacularly reversed
through Divine Grace was a good opportunity to validate the bodily
Resurrection of Christ the first fruits of our eventual Resurrection.
St Thomas had previously expressed a desire to die with our Lord Jesus, in
response to the other Apostles' fear that the Pharisees would seek to kill
Him should they re-enter Judea. ( John 11:16)
Consequently, the notion of St Thomas as wavering or pusillanimous in his
Faith can be further dispelled in light of his Evangelism, according to
which, he founded may Christian Communities and churches
throughout Palestine, Mesopotamia, Parthia, Ethiopia and India.
Furthermore, according to Holy Tradition, St Thomas eventually Baptized
the three Magi who had sought the New Born King by following the
Mysterious, Supernatural Star all the way from Persia to Bethlehem.
Preaching the Holy Gospel of Christ earned St Thomas a Martyrs Death after
having converted the wife and son of the Prefect of an Indian city Meliapur (Melipur).
The enraged pagan Prefect issued orders for the arrest, imprisonment and
torture of St Thomas who was finally Perfected after being stabbed to
death by five spears.
Various Holy Relics of St Thomas have been reverently preserved in India,
Hungary and on Mount Athos.
Due to his Evangelism in Syria and Persia, the Holy Apostle is highly
regarded within the Eastern Orthodox Church of Antioch, the Syriac
Church of Antioch, and the Assyrian Church of the East, which
separated from the Eastern Orthodox Church during the Nestorian
schism.
The Christian Community in India is known as the St Thomas Christians
since St Thomas was the Founder of their Church.
However, a dispute over the precise nature of this Evangelism, and whether
or not St Thomas personally ministered within India, resulted in a schism
between the Syriac Orthodox Church and the Malankara Orthodox
Syrian Church.
PASCHAL MATINS HYMNS SUNDAY

ST THOMAS 19 APRIL 2015

3.

St Thomas should therefore be considered as someone whose Faith might

have wavered at one crucial moment, yet through the Divine Grace of
Christ, it beame an opportunity for the demonstration and confirmation
of the actual Bodily Resurrection of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ
the Incarnate, Only Begotten, Eternal Son and Word of God the Father.
In addition it is the concomitant scriptural refutation of Docetism and the
Gnostic heresy.
The false association of St Thomas with Gnostic heretical works is all the
more extraordinary in light of the fact that his personal Experience, as
recorded in the Orthodox, Canonical, Gospel According to St John the
Beloved and Divine Theologian, Apostle and Evangelist, discredits the
Gnostic heresy that lies at the heart of the works allegedly authored by
St Thomas.
In addition to having been the Instrument whereby our Lord disproved that
pernicious heresy, through a remarkable application of Grace reversing
a sin into a moment of Divine Revelation, St Thomas should also be
remembered as a great Evangelist.
Just as St Peter and St Paul made their way to Rome to evangelize the
Gentiles therein, and St Andrew proceeded to the North-west, St Thomas
ventured East in order to spread the same Gospel of Peace and Divine
Love.
