Taiping, a historic town in northern Perak, is one of Malaysias best-kept secrets. Taiping tourist attractions, mostly
found outdoors, charms nature-lovers and adventure-seekers to this picturesque town. Aside from its wondrous flora
and fauna, Taiping is also known as the wettest place in Malaysia. It also holds the record of being the Malaysian
town to have the most number of historic firsts (just around 40). These historic firsts include events and places,
such as the first tin mine, the first police and government office, the first port, the first mosque, the first post office,
the first railway station, the first swimming pool, the first lake gardens, the first hill resort, the first museum, and the
first English school, among many others.
The first thing this Taiping guide suggests you definitely do is go sightseeing. Taipings charming environment will
transport you to the beauty of the old world. Make sure to visit the Taiping Lake Gardens, built in 1880 on a
former tin mine, and is the oldest in Malaysia. It features a serene man-made lake, a Japanese garden, and a
recreational park, and houses a variety of century-old trees and well-cultivated flowers. Another way you can go
sightseeing in Taiping Lake Gardens is to go water cycling in the lake. With its charming gazebos, wooden viewing
benches, old-fashioned lampposts, and well-tended gardens, it is no surprise that Taiping Lake Gardens remain the
top tourist destination in Taiping.
Make sure you drop by the Taiping Zoo and Night Safari, located right next to the Taiping Lake Gardens. The
oldest zoo in Malaysia, the Taiping Zoo houses about 1,300 animals in almost 14 hectares of land. It is open daily
from 8:30 AM until 6 PM, while the Night Safari featuring nocturnal animals opens at 8 PM until 11:00 PM. After your
zoo visit, hike on up to Bukit Larut, formerly known as Maxwell Hill. Located 1,250 meters above, it is the first and
oldest standing hill station in Malaysia. Popular with nature-lovers and bird-watchers, Bukit Larut offers a relaxing
stroll along fertile nature trails and lush flower gardens. Once you reach the summit of the hill, a mesmerizing view
of the Malaysian West Coast awaits you. Back at the foot of the hill, take a dip at the Coronation Swimming Pool,
with its very cold stream of mountain water, if you need to cool down.
Next on your list should be Perak Museum, the oldest museum in Malaysia. Built in 1883, Perak Museum has an
impressive collection of artifacts on zoology, anthropology and ethnology, as well as a huge collection of
archaeological finds such as ancient weapons, aboriginal tools and other historic ornaments. The museum building in
itself is a sight to behold, with its Gothic-meets-East structural design. Another significantly historical site to visit is
the Taiping War Cemetery, built for casualties of the second World War, particularly of the Malayan Campaign.
Over 850 soldiers, with 500 unknown, are commemorated in the cemetery. It is divided into two sections: one for
Christians and the other for non-Christians. The cemeterys well-kept lawns are a testimony to the importance
Taiping puts on history.
After an historical sightseeing, head on out to Bukit Merah Laketown Resort for an outdoors adventure that you
can enjoy with family and friends. A primary eco-tourism destination, the resorts main attractions include the
Waterpark, the Orang Utan Island, and the Eco Park. Bukit Merah Laketown Resort also has hotel rooms and
apartments, as well as chalets by the lake, which can be rented for stay. If you feel even more adventurous, try the
resorts lakeside camping sites.
Next time you decide to go on a different holiday, try the off-the-beaten path and visit all of the Taiping tourist
attractions listed here. Rest assured, you will not be disappointed.
