Montage
Description: A montage of three, free images used to create a poster with a spiritual
message/theme.
Objectives:
Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message.
Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks.
Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image.
Process: I grabbed a three free images from websites online that I felt would help me
communicate the feelings associated with light/promise and darkness/desolation. I took
the images into Photoshop were i cropped, sized and brought the photos together. Using
masks, layers, lasso tool, brush tool, filters, and more I merged the three images. I put
black and white filters on the boy and then brushed away some of it to have half his body
in color and half in black and white. I chose a straightforward font and color that would
stand out against the light half of the photo. I also put the difference effect on the font
which contrasted the color of the font and the background on which it is placed. I made
the right side of the boys body solid and colorful as it receives the light. The other half is
back and white and fading into the darkness.
Logos
Description: Design three different logos for the company Total Trash in Adobe Illustrator.
Date: February 22, 2015
Course/Instructor: Visual Media, Joel Judkins
Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that will
appeal to the audience.
Dont imitate existing logos or use previous designs.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw the logos.
(No pre-fabricated flares, symbols, photos or live-tracing.)
Process: I used Adobe Illustrator to design the logos. I first started off thinking what the
message of the company and logo was and who the message was targeted to. I Made three
logos that would send a the message of how much trash or waste is someone or a company
putting out comparable to the amount of waste output of the country. The company works
to calculate the amount of wast output by an individual or company in order to better
implement green and environmental friendly practices. I thought of simple objects that
signified trash and also objects that signified amounts as a whole or total. I therefore
incorporated pieces of trash, a dump trucks, a littering boy, and pie charts to send that
message. All designs were originally constructed and not traced. I then picked a friendly
color scheme to be inviting to individuals to think about going green. I picked I picked
fonts that were also fun and inviting and not too bold.
Business Card
Description: Create a Business Card, 3.52 front and back, for a company using Adobe
Illustrator and InDesign.
Objectives:
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.
Do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs.
Dont use photos or live trace.
Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card.
Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white space.
Process: I started with the idea that the look of the logo and design overall needed to
communicate more professionalism than my logos in the last project. I redesigned my
logo to be more simple, clean, recognizable and memorable. I chose a color scheme that
would communicate environment friendly but professional operations waste management.
I designed the logo in Illustrator first then brought it over to Indesign where I finished by
creating the stationery.
Letterhead
Description: Create a Stationery, with watermark, for a company.
Date: March 1, 2015
Course/Instructor: Visual Media, Joel Judkins
Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Illustrator, InDesign

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.
Do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs.
Dont use photos or live trace.
Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a letterhead.
Letterhead to be 8.5 x 11.
Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white space.
Process: I started with the idea that the look of the logo and design overall needed
to communicate more professionalism than my logos in the last project. I redesigned
my logo to be more simple, clean, recognizable and memorable. I chose a color scheme
that would communicate environment friendly but professional operations waste management. I designed the logo in Illustrator first then brought it over to Indesign where I
finished by creating the stationery.
Imaging
Description: Take a photo demonstrating lighting, focus and composition skills. Edit the
image in Adobe Photoshop and incorporate color scheme and design to create a poster.
Objectives:
Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the colors
into the layout.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image.
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE
(non-destructive editing.)
Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout.
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.
Process: I took the photo with my digital camera with the foreground in focus and the
background out of focus. I wanted to send a fun and enlightening message. The message is
that art can be crafted to send a unique message and also that those who do some kind of
art can be proud of it, despite what is said about it. I chose colors that maybe arent easy to
work with to show that the design still could be attractive and unique. I then imported the
picture to Adobe Photoshop were I made basic edits including dark/light shadow levels,
vibrancy/saturation adjustments, changing selective colors, and sharpen image. With the
image edited in Photoshop, I made a poster with image and a color scheme design that
matched the colors in the photo. I chose two fonts that had good contrast and shapes to be
repeated throughout the poster.
Flier
Description: A professional and inviting flier for a leadership conference for graduating
college seniors.
Objectives:
Retrieve image and logo and design basic flier layout.
Process: I used Abode InDesign to create the flier. I imported the image, logo, and text
and then created the design, shapes, and typography of the flier. In designing the flier I
used a five step method called FOCUS(Formulate a Plan, Organize the Layout, Contrast
the Elements, Unify the Parts, and Simplify the Message). First I formulated my plan by
determining the message, audience, and sketched possible designs. I settled on this one
after many sketches. I then organized the layout, what shapes to use withing the image,
how close and far together, and aligned them. I contrasted the elements of the design by
making unbalanced shapes to attract attention and choose colors and tints. Unifying the
parts I used some repetition with small rectangles and triangles and tried to make shapes
work together to create a bigger whole. Lastly to simplify the message I went through a
critique session with other students and then with my wife, who has an associates degree
in illustrations, to make sure the correct message was delivered.
Event Ad
Description: A color, full bleed ad to promote a fictional national event only using a
scanner and Microsoft Word.
Objectives:
Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together.)
Find, scan, size image, and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design.
Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience.
Use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.
Process: I first formulated my plan by selecting an image that would appeal to national
audience. I then organized the layout of the ad by making it full bleed on the page and
then choosing some shapes to make it unique and attractive. I placed a rectangle box
down the center and intersecting boxes near the bottom. I contrasted the elements by
contrasting the shapes placements, colors, transparency and also the fonts sizes and
types. I based the ads color scheme off the colors in the image which represent a split
complementary scheme. unified parts of the ad by adding rhythm with flow of the words
diagonally down the page. I also made repetition by making all the font white. Lastly I
kept things simple with just a few body copies and and few shapes.
Web Page
Description: Create a website, including HTML and CSS files, to display and explain how the logo
for Total Trash Co. was created. Resize and insert logo from Abode Photoshop into webpage.
Objectives:
Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side is 300 500 pixels.
Write content to describe the process of creating the logo and how it appeals to a target audience.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML.
Acquire a working knowledge of CSS.
Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker.
Process: First I had to resize my image to fit properly on the web page. I saved it as a PNG
file and inserted it in the html file. I used a template for html and css and added my own
structure and styling. I used TextWrangler to contruct the HTML and CSS files. I styled my
webpage with colors, fonts, logos, hyperlinks, etc.
