Chemistry and Mode of Action

ACUSOL 497N is a copolymer of acrylic acid and maleic anhydride with a molecular weight around 70,000 in order
to optimize the following properties.
z Anti-precipitation: ACUSOL 497N will increase solubility of precipitating salts by threshold effect. This allows

to reduce in the wash bath precipitation of inorganic salts (carbonates, sulfates of Ca and Mg). These salts
will otherwise deposit onto fabrics and give rise to ashes and graying effect.
z Crystal distortion: this polymer gets entrapped into crystal lattices, facilitating breakage. This minimizes

adherence of salts on fibers and facilitates their elimination by rinsing.

z Suspending properties: this polymer will keep insoluble or partly insoluble builders (such as zeolite or

layered silicate) uniformly suspended in the wash bath and prevent them from settling on fabrics.
z Dispersing properties: this polymer is an excellent dispersant for proteinaceous stains that have been

previously removed from fabrics. It will keep them in suspension in the wash bath.
z Processing aids: the polymeric nature of ACUSOL 497N polymer will bring binding properties enabling to

produce homogeneous and non-dusty detergent particles.

Benefits
ACUSOL 497N can be used in non-phosphate or reduced phosphate laundry, automatic dishwashing, industrial,
and institutional formulations to control the formation of insoluble scale (encrustation) and maintain fabric
whiteness. The polymer delivers the following advantages:

z Crystal growth modification, leading to a reduction in the level of insoluble carbonate and silicate scales

formed during the washing process.

z Excellent dispersant, which helps control the deposition of insoluble salts on fabrics, machine components

(heating elements), and hard surfaces. This leads to a reduction of inorganic filming and organic food soil
deposition in automatic dishwashing and warewash applications, and enhanced whiteness maintenance in
the laundering of fabrics (increased secondary detergency).
z Processing aid in the production of powder detergents (reduced number of fines, higher slurry solids, less

dusting, and subsequently lower energy consumption).

ACUSOL 497N is designed to be used in non-phosphate (P) detergents based on zeolites, silicates, and citrates. It
could alternatively be used in low P detergents.
In addition, ACUSOL 497N is an ideal candidate for water softeners based on zeolite. Its use level in washing baths
will be in the 100-300 ppm range.
