ICT: THEIR ROLES AND VALUE FOR


SCIENCE EDUCATION IN SCHOOL

ICT is an acronym or abbreviation of the word 'Information and Communication


Technology' which means Information Communication Technology. Information technology
can be defined as any method used to transmit, distribute, and display information.
Information Technology (Information Technology) or IT and ICT (Information and
Communication Technology) or ICT is the technology required for data processing. Very
broad scope of the title on all aspects of the management and processing of information.
Accurate and easy to use computers and software to convert, store, protect, process, transmit,
view, and access information regardless of time and place. Definition of information
technology can be summarized as a process flow, dissemination, processing and storage of
information using intermediate technology. Information technology is not limited to the
internet and computers, but it involves television, telephone, mobile phone, fax, telegram,
PDAs and satellite systems in conveying information to the recipient. Information and
communication technology (ICT) is very important nowadays. Developments in Information
and Communication Technology (ICT) has given a lot of positive impact on a wide range of
industrial fields including education It play a very important role in education especially for
science education. All people around the world are using ICT in their daily life. Therefore, it
is necessary for all educators to use a variety of teaching aids either in the form of equipment
or software in order to help stimulate and increase student interest and inclination towards a
topic.

There are many roles of ICT in science education in school. The first one is the use of
ICT in teaching and learning process to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of learning
outcomes. This is because teachers can prepare and be ready early in the process of teaching
and learning. Through this way, teachers can find information that related on the teaching
more better so they can convey to the students effectively. Through ICT as a teaching tool, the
process of teaching and learning will be more interesting and effective use of tools such as
powerpoint, flash, video, visual, and they only need to apply these tools into teaching and
learning process. In this way the learning process can be more simple, and concise because
the students will be exposed to an overview and presentation of interesting and easy to
understand. Therefore, students will not be easy to feel tired and bored in undergoing the
process of teaching and learning, attracted by the style of presentation that is shown through
ICT.

In addition, the effect of the use of ICT is to make the process of teaching and learning
and to create a fun learning environment. With the advent of ICT teachers can diversify the
teaching and learning process and not just focus on technical lectures alone can even improve
the quality of teaching by using various facilities available in the ICT. Through the use of ICT
tools a teacher can explain to students with more detail and depth on a subject. For example,
the use of the internet as a tool to get the latest information about the world of education. The
ability to use the internet to allow teachers and students to get the latest information and
knowledge more quickly and efficiently without having to wait for a long time so can be used
in learning activities. Subjects such as biology usually use graphics to understand the parts of
a particular organ in the human body and animals. By using ICT, teacher can deliver their
knowledge more easily by displaying a picture or video download from internet and display it
using the LCD projector in school. By using this way the quality of teaching and learning will
be more efficient because the information can directly access into the system.

The use of ICT in teaching and learning process is very important because it can
improve the skills of teachers and students. Through the use of ICT in teaching and learning
processes of students will be exposed to a variety of tools and materials on ICT such as
computers, LCD, CD, pen drive, hardware, software, internet and others. All things pertaining
to ICT has many functions and uses its own in undergoing the process of teaching and
learning in schools. This is because through the use of ICT in teaching and learning and the
student will master the latest technologies that can help in the understanding of every subject
of study as well as storing, processing and recording of any information obtained. Students
can access the information via internet and can use to do their homework more easily.

Skills in using ICT is able to add value to the teacher to be able to use it to convey
knowledge to students so that they are easy to understand. Besides that, teachers can also add
knowledge of ICT systems through experience gained in the course of the teaching process.
This is because during the process of teaching and learning of teachers and students will
interact with each other about what they have learned and to exchange views on the
effectiveness of using ICT systems as well as provide suggestions to improve the quality of
delivery. In this way teachers and students will strive to further enhance the knowledge of ICT
technology. In a borderless world, teachers and students need to use every technology

available in order not to be left behind, especially in the field of education that much use of
ICT in teaching and learning process. Depth knowledge of ICT is important for teachers so
that they may be applied in teaching and learning to facilitate understanding.

Other than that, we can save time by using ICT. For example, the teachers or students
in school not necessary to find the book in the library to get the information because it will
waste their time. By using ICT, teachers and students can easily access the information
through the internet. Information delivery is also more convenient and systematic even the
teachers are not faced to their students. Teacher can spread the information through online by
using email, facebook, and others. Teacher and students can interact each other via internet
even in holiday time. This is called E-Learning or learning through online learning
implementation is supported by services such as mobile technology, audio, videotape, or
satellite transmission or computer. Teachers can share their file or document that related to
teaching and learning process using email and all their students can access it easily wherever
they are. Student also can send their assignment or homework softcopy through online so the
teacher are easy to check before the student submit the final hardcopy assignment. For
example, sciences student can send their laboratory report softcopy easily to the teachers
email.

The benefits obtained as a result of the use of ICT in teaching and learning process is
able to provide the same learning opportunities to all students of different abilities. In a class
not all students have the same ability to accept something that is taught by the teacher.
Therefore, through the use of ICT pupils are able to understand what is taught clearly due to
the process of teaching and learning will be more interesting and effective results from the use
of ICT tools. For example, through the use of tools such as PowerPoint, graphics, audio, video
and so on then the students will better understand what is taught each to be given a
presentation and presentation easier to understand than the teaching and learning process in
the form of lectures. In this way each problem can be immediately notified by the student to
the teacher because they are easy to respond to the system taught using ICT.

As the conclusion, Information and Communication Technology or ICT provides


many advantages in education especially for science education to improve the teaching and
learning process in the school. Teachers can improve their teaching skills by using ICT and
students also can improve their knowledge through ICT. Teachers and students both get the
advantage in the learning process. Productivity and quality of the teachers and studens also
can be improve from time to time to improve competitiveness between students. With ICT, the
school can produce students who are skilled in the field of ICT and help them in their studies
at the next level thus facilitating them to find a job soon.
