Western art music has been present in the human civilization for around 2000 years. The
origins of this genre of music is said to be in Europe. The term that is used when one is
talking about western art music is known as MUSICKING. The range of western art music
and of musicking for that matter is from 400BC- 2000CE that is from ancient Greece to
todays global contemporary Classical eurological music.
There is a book written by author Christopher Small. In his 1998 book, Small argues for
introducing a new word to the English dictionary that of musicking (from the verb to
music), meaning any activity involving or related to music performance. He has also stated
that any kind of organized sound cannot be defined as music furthermore he says that for
music to be made every single person involved must collaborate in order to create music.
The topic that I found interesting was the history of western art music and the different time
phases that it has passed in order to reach the platform that it is at in the modern day. Western
art music originated in the medieval period and went on to the postmodern period that is now.

The other thing related to the history of western art music is the question why is it called ART
music and not classical music. It is said that this genre of music has its origins in the realms
of the ancient Roman civilization of the highest tax bracket of people that is the elite and the
rich. But gradually as the world progressed the era of the romantics began and they felt that
the music of composers such as Beethoven, Mozart and Haydn was considered to be of a
bygone era and after Beethoven died that is when the era of the romantics started.
As the human civilization moved from medieval music to postmodern music there are a lot of
changes that can be seen in the growth of music. Medieval music was not at all complex and
had very little or almost no beats it was just plain singing which was known as plainchant. It
was the baroque age of music when music instruments were introduced for the first time.
There was a lot more contrast that could be seen in the music as it progressed along with time
and gradually form a fixed structure of music there was a wide range of possibilities that open
in music and as a result of this anything could be possible in music and this is the postmodern
outlook of western art music.
