Checkpoint 15.

12
1. X ~ N(200, 36) and Y ~ N(100, 64) are two independent normal distributions. State the
distribution for
(a) X Y
(b) X Y
(c) X 2Y
2. If X ~ N(6, 0.04) and Y ~ N(10, 0.09), find
(a) P ( X Y 15)
(b) P( 4.4 X Y 3.6)
(c) P (4 X 3Y 3)
(d) P (2 X 5Y 60)
3. The average time required to perform job A is 78.5 minutes with a standard deviation 16.2
minutes. The average time required to perform job B is 103.2 minutes with a standard
deviation 11.3 minutes. The cost to perform job A is RM4 per minute and the cost to
perform job B is RM3 per minute. What is the probability that the cost of job A is greater
than that of job B?
4. The time taken by Johan to brush his teeth every morning follows a normal distribution with
mean 8 minutes and standard deviation 1.5 minutes. The time taken by Johan to bathe every
morning before he goes to work follows a normal distribution with mean 20 minutes and
standard deviation 2 minutes. Find the probability that
(a) the total time taken by Johan to brush his teeth and bathe on a day chosen at random
exceeds 35 minutes,
(b) the time taken by Johan to bathe is more than twice the time taken to brush his teeth on a
day chosen at random.
5. Halim has to leave the office to go to the post office, the bookshop and the bank. The times,
in minutes, spent at these places are normal random variable X 1 ~ N (15,4) , X 2 ~ N (5,1)
and X 3 ~ N (8,2) respectively. X 4 ~ N (12,3) is the total time spent walking to all the three
places and then back to the office. Assume all four times are independent and he plans to
leave the office at 0900. He also intends to post a note on the door which reads I will return
by ______. What time, to the nearest minute, should Halim write on the note if he wants the
probability of returning after that time to be less than 0.01?
