MEASUREMENT PRINCIPLE
The Casella Monitor ML 9810 Ozone (O3)
Analyser is a U.V. photometer which
accurately and reliably measures ozone
concentrations in ambient air.
Upon entering the pneumatic system, the gas
sample containing ozone passes through a
selective ozone scrubber which converts the
ozone to oxygen. The sample, without ozone,
passes through an absorption cell where a
detector measures the amount of 254nm
U.V. radiation absorbed. This reference
measurement is defined as I0 and its value
includes any other gases and particulate
matter which may be present in the sample.

SYSTEM INTEGRATION
Analogue Output:
Providing both 0-, 2-, 4-20mA as well as
selectable voltage output, stand alone as
well as multi analyser rack systems, interface
with both data logger and recorder
acquisition units.
Digital Output:
Utilising RS 232 port, data-status-controls are
utilised either as Multi-drop shared between
analysers or directly with external acquisition
systems. Various software packages facilitate
ease of data manipulation.

ANALYSER BLOCK DIAGRAM

Upon completion of the reference

measurement, the gas sample containing
ozone bypasses the ozone scrubber and
goes directly into an absorption cell. This
sample measurement of U.V. radiation
with ozone is defined as I.
The analysers microprocessor uses the
Beer-Lambert relationship to calculate the
ozone concentration using I0 and I.

corrected for temperature and pressure
changes, is displayed in ppm or mg/m3.
Featuring a drop down front panel for easy
access includes a built-in data display for
trends, averages, status and historical
information in digital and graphic format.

Sample flow rate is variable and allows for

faster purge during zero and span cycles
and faster return to sampling mode. The
variable flow rate enables the analyser to
get more data points at steady state zero
and span conditions.
Access through the front panel for routine
maintenance operations, such as filter
changes, eliminates the need to remove the
instrument from a rack or take the cover off.
The analyser accommodates all analog
interface requirements without additional
output boards or voltage to current
converters.
Internal vacuum pump and built-in sample
inlet particulate filter.
THEORY OF OPERATION
The ML 9820 family of analysers are based
on gas filter correlation spectroscopy which
provides for accurate and reliable
measurements of CO2.

Three separate full scale ranges provide

coverage of a wide variety of applications.
The three analysers in the family are the
98201000-101 ranging from 0-3000 ppm,
the 98201000-102 from 0-1500 ppm and
the 98201000-103 from 0-750 ppm. Each
analyser is configured specifically for its
operational range at the factory. It is important
to specify the operational range at the time of
purchase.
The ML 9820 analysers measure the
absorption of infrared radiation (IR) within
a folded path measurement cell. Infrared
broadband radiation is passed through a
rotating gas filter wheel where one filter cell
contains CO2 and another cell contains N2.
When the IR radiation passes through the
CO2 portion of the wheel, all wavelengths at
which CO2 can absorb are completely
removed from the radiation, leaving those
wavelengths that are unaffected by CO2 to
create a reference beam.

Since both the reference and measure

phases of the beam have the same source,
detector, and optical path, only the amount
of CO2 in the sample cell can effect the
difference in intensity between the two
phases. This methodology results in an
instrument that is very insensitive to interferent
gases, fluctuations in the IR source, vibration
and accumulation of dust on the optics.

When IR radiation passes through the

nitrogen portion of the wheel, CO2-specific
wavelengths are not removed from the
radiation and a measure beam, which will
be attenuated by any CO2 in the sample, is
created. The rotation of the gas filter wheel,
in effect creates a beam which alternates
between reference and measure phases.
The alternating beam is passed through a
multipass absorption cell (white cell) where
CO2 is monitored by measuring the
attenuation of the measurement beam.

The final concentration of CO2 corrected

for temperature and pressure changes, is
displayed in units of parts per million (ppm) or
milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3).

MEASUREMENT PRINCIPLE
The Casella Monitor ML 9841 Nitrogen
Oxides Analyser is an advanced design
chemiluminescence analyser providing
accurate, reliable and efficient monitoring
of NO, NO2, and NOX.
It incorporates a single-channel design for
simplified and maximum reliability. Unique to
the ML9841 is the measurement of NO and
NOX from the same common sample volume
ensuring that there are no misleading
artefacts due to stream switching.

Extended Memory capacity is incorporated

in all ML9800 series analysers providing
recorded data to be downloaded on site or
remotely utilizing MECOMM utility software
or any computer terminal program.

SYSTEM INTEGRATION
Analogue Output:
Providing both 0-,2-, 4-20mA as well as
selectable voltage output, stand alone as
well as multi analyser rack systems, interface
with both data logger and recorder
acquisition units.
Digital Output:
Utilising RS 232 port, data-status-controls are
utilised either as Multi-drop shared between
analysers or directly with external acquisition
systems. Various software packages facilitate
ease of data manipulation.

ANALYSER BLOCK DIAGRAM

A single reaction chamber and photomultiplier

tube (PMT) measure the chemiluminescence
(light) produced by the reaction between NO
and OZONE.
A common measurement sample is
alternately switched either through or
around a NO2 to NO converter (heated
molybdenum). Thus, the instrument
alternately measures NO and NOX ( NO +
NO2 = NOX ) from the same sample volume
and the difference between the two readings
provide an accurate computed NO2 value
even in traffic-intensive locations.

ML 9842
Ammonia Analyser
The addition of an ammonia thermal oxidizer
to the Monitor Europe ML 9842 enables the
measurement of levels of ammonia in ambient
air. A highly efficient thermal oxidizer is able to
convert over 95% of ammonia with minimal
impact on analyzer performance. The Monitor
Europe ML 9842 Ammonia Analyser is an
advanced design chemiluminescence
analyser providing accurate, reliable and
efficient operation.
FEATURES AND BENEFITS
Single channel design for simplified
operation and maximum reliability.
NO and NO2 measurements from the same
sample stream. No misleading artefacts due
to stream switching.
Built-in Perma Pure drier eliminates
replacement of drying agents.
Chopperless design removes need to
replace belts or motors.
On-board data storage provides data
backup and remote analyser data download
for analysis, reports and archives.
Multi Drop RS232 allows connection of
several analysers to logger or direct to
remote P.C./Software via modem.
Self diagnostics and full remote control
incorporated via multi-drop RS232.
Provides ease of storage and maintenance.
Optional 12 V.DC Power operation for
battery or solar power.
Drop-Down front panel for quick and easy
access to consumables.
Internal or external pump for on-site
flexibility.

The ML 9841 uses a single-channel design

for simplified operation and maximum
reliability. A single reaction chamber and
photomultiplier tube (PMT) measures the
chemiluminescence (light) produced by the
reaction between NO and Ozone. The
measurement sample is alternately switched
either through or around a NO2 to NO
converter (heated molybdenum). Thus, the
instrument alternately measures NO and NOx
(NO plus NO2 = NOx). The difference
between the two readings provides a
computed NO2 value.
Within the ML 9841 we have introduced a
carefully designed and optimised 'true-time
sample handling procedure' which ensures
the sample for NO and NOx analysis is
always carried out on the same air sample
and that there are no misleading artefacts due
to stream switching. This also eliminates the
need for any mathematical correction as is
necessary in other competitive units.

The final concentration of NO and NO2,

corrected for temperature and pressure
changes, are displayed in units of parts per
million (ppm) or milligrams per cubic meter
(mg/m3).
A large built-in graphics data display is
designed to present trends, averages, status
and historical information in digital and
graphic format. User selectable menu screens
provide access to all available options and
instrument set-up.
The ML 9841 automatically selects the
optimum measuring range for the display
and RS232 outputs for each parameter.
Values are reported as floating point
numbers, making range selecting and
reporting unnecessary. The instrument
includes an analogue-over-range feature that,
when enabled, automatically switches the
analysers analogue output to a pre-selected
higher range.

MEASUREMENT PRINCIPLE
The Casella Monitor ML 9850 Sulphur
Dioxide (SO2) Analyser is an advanced
design analyser which uses U.V. fluorescence
technology to measure concentrations of
SO2 accurately and reliably.
The ML 9850 depends on the fluorescent
radiation produced by the SO2 molecules
when excited by U.V. radiation. The excitation
U.V. radiation is measured by the reference
detector and the fluorescent radiation is
measured by a photomultiplier tube (PMT).
The two measurements are compared by
ratio in a classical dual channel technique to
compensate against the effects of variation in
source intensity, optical contamination, and
common PMT drift characteristics.

The optimum measuring range is

automatically selected for the display and
RS 232 outputs for each parameter.
Values are reported as floating point numbers
avoiding range selection and reporting.
Extended Memory capacity is incorporated
in all ML9800 series analysers providing
recorded data to be downloaded on site or
