INTERACTIVE BOOK

ANSWER KEY

CHAPTER 1

WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?

1) A: Answers will vary. Our lives should be an ongoing adventure, marked by rich
fellowship with our heavenly Father and a steady flow of His power. Revelation of truth
should be ongoing; experiencing freedom, joy, peace, and all the fruit of the Spirit and
the gifts of the Spirit should be commonplace, not the exception.
2) A: Answers may vary. If we view the Holy Spirit as just an it or mystical power, were
easily susceptible to becoming spiritually proud, thinking more highly of ourselves than
we are. This is a very dangerous position because God resists and rejects those who are
proud; they dont receive His grace (see James 4:6; 1 Peter 5:5). In contrast, if we
believe the Holy Spirit is a Person equal with God, well have a deep reverence and awe
of Him and open ourselves up to be transformed by His working and blessed beyond
measure. We will see Him as the indescribable gift He is and learn to lean on Him and
call upon Him for everything we need.
3) A: Answers will vary. Lack of teaching on the Holy Spirit has resulted in a lack of
understanding of the Spirits indescribable power and abilities to help us in our daily
walk with God. The Holy Spirit is life and He plays an indispensable role in everything
we do. Pride and leaning on our own understanding, wisdom, creativity, resources, etc.,
has also caused us to not humble ourselves and seek the Spirits leadership and help.
4) A: According to Scripture, the Person of Jesus is in heaven, seated at the right hand of
Father God, making intercession for each of us. It is not the Person of Jesus who is living
in our hearts as believers; it is the Holy Spirit (who is the Spirit of Christ and the Spirit of
God) who has come to take up residence in our hearts.
5) A: God the Father initiates the work; Hes like the architect who develops the blueprint.
God the Son administrates the work; He acts as the foreman to interpret the blueprint
and instruct the workers. God the Holy Spirit manifests the work; He functions as the
workers (subcontractors) that actually carry out the Sons instruction. The will of God
originates from the Father. The Son is the Word who administers the Fathers will. And
the Holy Spirit is the Person of action that carries out or brings about the will. The Spirit
does nothing independent of the Word (Jesus), and Jesus does nothing independent of the
Father.
6) A: Answers will vary. Knowing the Holy Spirit is our forever Friend who is called to walk
alongside us should encourage us to talk to Him regularly and involve Him in every
aspect of our lives. Anytime, anywhere, we can ask Him for anything we need! He is fully
God and all that we need is made available to us through Him. Wisdom, creativity, joy,
peace, love, self-control, patience, healing, favor, financial provision, emotional stability,
strength, and everything else we need is ours if we will ask the Spirit of grace for it.
7) A: This question requires individual responses.

CHAPTER 2

THE PERSONALITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

1) A: Answers may vary. The Holy Spirit is God and knows all things, including His perfect
plan for our lives. He desires to reveal to us what lies ahead in order to prepare us and
direct us to accomplish His will. If we are not in good fellowship with the Spirit, we will
likely be unable to hear His voice and may miss opportunities and blessings He has
planned.
2) A: Answers may vary. Good partners communicate and work well together; they keep
their eyes and ears open to each other and are ready to help when the need arises. As
believers under the New Covenant, we are co-laborers with God (see 1 Corinthians 3:9).
Gods Holy Spirit lives within us twenty-four/seven. He never sleeps; we can talk with
Him anytime, anywhere, about anything.
3) A: Answers may vary. Enjoying a deep level of intimacy with the Holy Spirit takes place
as we make Him top priority. Quality time is the key. The more time we invest in our
relationship with Himcommunicating and giving Him our undivided attentionthe
deeper and more rewarding our communion will be. Intimacy can only be developed
through relationship.
4) A: Answers may vary. The more we talk about and brag on the Holy Spirit, the more He
will manifest in our lives. Since the Holy Spirit loves to bring praise and glory to Jesus,
we can honor Him by sincerely worshiping Jesusindividually and corporately. Yes, this
includes expressing thanks for things Hes done and singing songs of praise, but it also
includes being obedient to His Wordespecially how we treat others. When we show
love and kindness to others, the way we want to be treated, we honor Jesus and the Holy
Spirit (see Matthew 25:35-45). The more we hate the things He hates and love the things
He loves, the more He will feel honored and the more He will manifest.
5) A: In Genesis 1:27 we read, God created human beings in his own image. In the image
of God he created them; male and female (NLT). Men and women are created in the
image of God. Since He created both male and female in His image, both genders have
their origin in God. And what is true of God is true of His Holy Spirit. Some more
traditionally feminine behavioral patters are seen in the tender, gentle, comforting
qualities of the Spirit. However, the Holy Spirit is never described as female in Scripture.
6) A: Answers may vary. We grieve the Spirit when our actions are ungodly; this is
especially true with the way we treat others. He wants us to get along with our brothers
and sisters, not treat them badly. When we speak foul, abusive language that discourages
and hurts people, we grieve the Holy Spirit. We also bring Him sorrow when we hold on
to anger, resentment, and bitterness toward others. When our tempers become enraged,
we often end up speaking malicious words of slander and hatred to others.
Quenching the Spirit happens when we treat words of prophecy and the activity of the
Spirit with contempt (disrespect, scorn, hatred). Quenching the Spirit is more connected
with dishonoring Himtreating His manifest presence as common or no big deal.

The words we speak about others are very important to God. We need to spend time with
the Holy Spirit and in the Word regularly and allow Him to do a work in our hearts.
When others hurt or disappoint us, we must quickly surrender our pain to God in prayer,
releasing them into His care and asking Him to bless them. To avoid quenching the
Spirit, we must learn not to spurn and criticize prophecy and the Spirits activity. If
something is spoken that was not of God, we will know it in our spirit and we can throw it
out. The rest we are to receive with a humble, grateful heart.
7) A: Answers may vary. Blaspheming the Holy Spirit is calling the His work evil, or of the
devil. For someone to do such a thing their heart must be extremely hardened and
nonresponsive to the touch or voice of the Holy Spirit. It may be that theyre so hardened
and closed to the Spirit of God that they stubbornly refuse to humble themselves before
Him and acknowledge they are a sinner in need of a Savior. Jesus was intimately
connected with the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of His Father. He knows the tender, gentle ways
of the Spirit and is very protective of Him. The more we love and value a person, the
more protective we are and the more infuriated we become when someone belittles or
abuses them.

CHAPTER 3

THREE LEVELS OF RELATIONSHIPS

1) A: The traditions of men are inherited, established, or customary patterns of thought,
action or behavior that are contrary to Gods Word. Not all traditions are inherently bad,
but when we allow these traditions to take precedence over Gods Word, we become
disconnected in our relationship with God because He is the Spirit of truth. He is looking
for people who will worship Him in spirit and in truth (see John 4:23-24). Anything that
we believe and practice as a form of our faith that is not founded in Scripture is a
tradition of men.
2) A: Answers may vary. Some of the things that can steal the attention and affection of the
Church away from the Holy Spirit in our day include entertainment, recreational
activities, and social media. If we as believers seek the lust of the eyes (material
possession), the lust of the flesh (pleasures), and the pride of life (position/status), we will
put enmity (hostility, bad feelings) between the Holy Spirit and ourselves. He will become
quiet and inactive in our lives, for He will not tolerate our friendship with the world.
3) A: In John 20:29, Jesus is telling Thomas and all believers, Not seeing and believing is
better. You cant go to the deepest level of knowing Me if you just live by what you can
see and touch (the physical realm); you have to get into the unseen realm of the Spirit to
know Me intimately. This is the essence of what God is saying through Paul in 2
Corinthians 5:16that we should not evaluate people (or Jesus) by what they have or
how they look in the natural. Even though Paul and the early believers knew about
Christs physical appearance and attributes, they chose not to view Him in that light any
longer. Remember, the Pharisees were so focused on the natural side of Jesus that they
missed the supernatural truth that He was God in the flesh. Being limited to knowing
Jesus only by the Spirit enables us to have a deeper relationship with Him.
4) A: The first and lowest level is the natural or physical. On this physical level, people are
connected with each other purely for reasons of physical attraction and/or material
possessions, prestige, and power. The next level of relationship is the soul or personality
level. At the soul level, people connect on a deeper level of common thinking, feelings,
and goals.
The highest or deepest level of relationship one can have is the spiritual level. This level
goes far beyond natural, physical appearance as well as the thinking, emotions, and
desires (soul realm) and gets to the heart, the core, of who a person really is. The
spiritual level can only be reached as people fellowship around the things of the Spirit
the Word, prayer, etc. You really cant know about a person intimately until you know
their spirit; this is also true when it comes to God. To intimately know who God is, we
must intimately know His Spirit.
5) A: Answers may vary. God the Father has given us the gift of His Holy Spirit so that we
can intimately know His heart and mind and grasp all that He has for us. Its only as we
engage the Spirit in ongoing, intimate communion that we will truly know God. As we

stay in fellowship with the Spirit, we can understand spiritual things and respond
appropriately. We have been given the mind of Christ, but it is only truly alert and active
as we dwell in relationship with the Spirit.
6) A: Answers may vary. More than likely, Paul had a deeper revelation of Jesus. He never
knew Jesus in His physical form like Peter. He totally relied on his spiritual relationship
with the Master. Therefore, all his knowledge of Jesus and from Jesus was given to him
through communion with the Holy Spiritthe Spirit of Christ who leads us and guides us
into all truth (see John 16:12-13). For Peter, it appears that the years of physically
walking with Jesus may have limited his understanding. This is noted in Peters words in
2 Peter 3:15-16, that some of Pauls comments were hard to understand.
7) A: If we neglect to pursue communion with the Holy Spirit, we will deny ourselves the
opportunity to really know the Son, Jesus. We must abandon any unbiblical traditions
and mindsets related to the Holy Spirit or knowing God and embark upon a personal
journey of discovery of who God isFather, Son, and Holy Spiritas revealed in the
eternal Word of Scripture. The remainder of this question requires personal response.

CHAPTER 4

EMPOWERED BY THE SPIRIT

1) A: Answers may vary. The moment we are born again, Gods Spirit comes to live in our
spirits and we are placed into the Body of Christ (see John 14:23). We are repositioned.
He makes our spirits that were dead in sin alive again and in right relation with God the
Father (Ephesians 2:1-6; 2 Corinthians 5:21). On the other hand, when we are filled with
the Holy Spirit, we are submerged into Gods Spirit and filled with His power to live as
Christ lived. The Holy Spirit comes to live in us for relationship; He comes upon us to
empower us for the works Hes called us to do.
2) A: Answers may vary. The only way Jesus could live the life He lived and endure the
intense opposition and treatment He received from the world was for Him to be filled
with the power of the Holy Spirit (see Luke 4:14; John 3:34). He knew His followers
would need the same power of His Spirit to fearlessly do the same. Likewise, in order to
be witnesses for Christ today, we too must be filled with the Holy Spirit. Only then can we
effectively advance Gods kingdom, endure opposition, and live victoriously.
3) A: Personal response required.
4) A: First, receiving the infilling of the Holy Spirit is a separate experience from salvation.
Second, bystanders saw and heard an outward manifestation of the Holy Spirit as those
who had been filled spoke in other tongues. More than likely, God saved and filled
Cornelius and his family with the Holy Spirit simultaneously to supernaturally prove
without question to Peter and the other Jewish believers that salvation through Jesus
Christ was for the Gentiles too, not just the Jews.
5) A: When God spoke through Paul and said, Do all speak in tongues? (with the implied
answer of no), He was saying that not all believers in the body of Christ (the Church)
have the public ministry gift of speaking in tongues. This type of tongues is different than
tongues for personal edification and interpretation. All believers can operate in the
personal types of tongues (prayer language).
Second, God did say through Paul that tongues, prophecy, and knowledge will all one
day cease and vanish, but this will not happen until that which is perfect has come.
When Jesus, the Perfect One, comes and we see Him face to face, thats when tongues,
prophecy, and knowledge will cease and vanish. Until then, they are to be embraced by
Gods grace, used and not abused for His glory and our strengthening.
6) A: Tongues described in 1 Corinthians 14:22 are tongues as a sign to unbelievers to
believe and receive the truth of the Gospel. These are an earthly language unknown to
the one speaking but known to the unbeliever God is trying to reach.
Tongues described in 1 Corinthians 12:10 are tongues for interpretation. These are
heavenly languages given to believers to be interpreted so the church can understand the
truth God is speaking to His people. These first two mentioned tongues are for public use.

Tongues described in 1 Corinthians 14:14-15 are tongues for personal prayer. These are
heavenly languages given to believers for private purposes. When we speak in these
tongues, we speak to God and build our spirits up in faith (see Jude 20).
Tongues described in Romans 8:26-28 are tongues for intercession. These are heavenly
languages given to believers to intercede (pray) for themselves and others when they
dont know what or how to pray.
Why is it important to understand the differences between these types of tongues?
Answers will vary on last part. It is important to understand the differences so that we
can know which expression of the Spirit is operating and how to flow with Him and not
against Him.
7) A: Answers may vary. First Corinthians 14:23 instructs us not to pray in our personal
prayer language in the public setting of our church when unbelievers or uninformed
believers are present. Unbelievers do not understand the things of God, and uninformed
believers have not been taught about the language of the Spirit. A person belonging to
either group would be uncomfortable in an atmosphere where others pray together in
tongues. They could easily become offended, closed in heart, and think that those
speaking in tongues are out of their minds.
On the other hand, there are times when a church calls for a believers prayer meeting
(say, on a Saturday morning or Monday evening). In these meetings all are informed
believers. It is perfectly fine for all to pray in tongues together as a group ministering to
the Lord or interceding. This is collective prayer power in the Spirit. Prayer times like
these can create an atmosphere for the Holy Spirit to move in incredible waysboth
during the prayer time and afterwards.
8) A: Answers may vary. Yes, a person can be filled with the Holy Spirit and not speak in
tongues. Just as a person can walk out into a river and choose not to yield themselves to
the rivers flow and float downstream, a believer can walk into the river of the Holy
Spirit (be filled with the Spirit) and choose not to yield to the flow of words the Spirit
desires to speak through him. This happens many times as a result of fearthe fear of
losing control of oneself or looking foolish to others. It also happens because of error
that has been taught and believed, as well from a lack of understanding. When something
is foreign to our understanding (especially about God), we tend to judge and criticize it.
By doing so, we place a barrier between us and the thing we dont understand.
Repentance and humility (the fear of the Lord) break down barriers of fear and
misunderstanding and open the door to the fullness of God.

CHAPTER 5

THE SPIRITS LANGUAGE

1) A: Praying in tongues
(1) Is a secret language that keeps the enemy from knowing what God is about to do
(2) Facilitates deeper intimacy with God
(3) Enables us to receive Gods counsel and wisdom about the situations we face
(4) Brings refreshing and rest to our being
(5) Builds our inner man
(6) Strengthens and builds our faith
(7) Gives us the ability to praise and worship God and communicate on a higher level
2) A: This question requires a personal response. Note: Satan is clueless about the meaning
of our petitions offered in tongues. Like Gods plan of salvation through Christs death
and resurrection, there are many things He doesnt want the enemy to understand. The
heavenly language of tongues empowers us to bring heaven to earth, mobilizing Gods
angels to destroy the enemys attacks and successfully advance Christs kingdom.
3) A: Answers may vary. When we need Gods wisdom, we can begin to pray in our
heavenly languages. As we do, the Holy Spirit will speak to our spiritsnot our heads
the answers we need. Proverbs 20:5 NKJV says, Counsel in the heart of man is like
deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out. As we pray, we can ask the
Holy Spirit for the interpretation of the tongues we have prayed (see 1 Corinthians
14:13). The answers (or ideas) we need may not come immediately, but in time, His
divine direction will bubble up from within us. The Holy Spirit within us is the
Fountain of living water (Jeremiah 2:13; John 7:38-39), and praying in tongues (the
language of the Spirit) is like putting a bucket down in the well of our spirit to draw out
the living water we need. With joy we will receive the answers we seek (see Isaiah 12:3).
4) A: This question requires a personal response.
5) A: Answers may vary. When we pray with our understanding, it directly edifies (builds
up, strengthens) our soul, which is our mind, will, and emotions. It also connects us with
whomever we are praying for. When we praise and worship the Lord with our
understanding, we are flooded with humility and thankfulness and awe for who God is
and all that He provides to enrich our lives. Praying in the Spirit allows us to
supernaturally communicate with God and tap into His will for situations; words and
phrases in our known language often surface to our minds, along with scriptures to back
them up. With this spiritual insight, we can focus our prayers like a laser, unleashing
Gods power to manifest in the situation.
6) A: Obviously, Paul is not saying, Keep your lips moving in prayer every minute of the
day. After all, the Bible tells us to share the gospel and encourage one another. We
cannot do either of these things if we spend every second moving our lips in prayer.
What Paul is actually saying in this verse is that we can and should have continuous
communion with the Spirit of God. To pray without ceasing is to never quench the Holy

Spirits presence, which is what we are warned about in the very next verse. It means that
we are aware of His presence and sensitive to His voice. In other words, we dont
suppress His involvement in our lives.
7) A: The first part of this question requires a personal response. Believers who have not
been filled with the Holy Spirit are not to be shamed or belittled, for we are all one in
Christ. The gift of speaking in tongues is available to every believer; those who do not yet
speak in tongues have not been excluded from this promise. We should humbly pray that
all believers will be filled with the Spirit, and we should honor and love those who have
not yet received this Gift. As more believers are filled with the Spirit, Christs body will
experience greater power and there will be greater opportunity for the Spirit to manifest
Gods kingdom on earth.

CHAPTER 6

Q&A
1) A: Answers will vary. Review the spiritual gifts mentioned in Romans 12:6-8 and 1
Corinthians 12:8-10. How can these be practiced in your homes? Your businesses? Your
communities? The Spirits activity is not restricted to a church building or a service. He
wants to minister to people in the contexts of everyday life.
2) A: Personal response required.
3) A: Answers will vary. In Mark 10:6-9, Jesus says that married couples have been joined
by God and are one flesh. Peter emphasizes the importance God places on the union of
marriage when he instructs husbands to honor their wives so that God will hear their
prayers (see 1 Peter 3:7). God desires unity and oneness in marriage and thus speaks to
both the husband and the wife things that are necessary for the strength and success of
their life together. By honoring each other, praying about decisions together, and seeking
the Lord as married couples, we can receive the direction God is giving.
4) A: Answers will vary. Proverbs 11:14 and 15:22 encourage us to seek the counsel of
many advisors. The same Holy Spirit who lives in us lives in the trusted believers around
us. Mature advisors can help to affirm what God is speaking to our hearts. We can also
pray in the Spirit. He knows what to pray even when we dont, and in our heavenly
language we can articulate truths and insights that will bubble up and be revealed in our
understanding.
5) A: Personal response required.
