Students Union
A democratic organisation, London Met Students
Union voices the views and concerns of our
students on a range of issues relating to the
University and the wider community. Each and every
student has the opportunity to stand and be elected,
so if youre keen to gain experience of working for
a large and influential organisation, or would like to
help make key decisions about the University, joining
the Union is a great way to do so. The SU is also the
place to go for student societies, social events and
independent advice.
StARs
Our Student Academic Representatives (StARs) help
to make a difference to the lives of our students by
raising issues around specific course-related areas
such as tutor feedback or library resources. Each
course is represented by its own StAR and each
StAR is elected by their fellow students. Gathering
the views of their classmates and presenting them
to the course team and the University, our reps have
the opportunity to work closely with staff, University
management, the NUS and the Students Union.

daunting. Our Accommodation Bureau can help you

Is there a particular area of London that youd
like to live in?

Staff profile
Tara Young, senior research fellow
(Faculty of Social Sciences and
Humanities), author and researcher
in UK gang membership
I joined London Met in 2004, and began working with
Professor Simon Hallsworth* on a number of research
projects that have attempted to establish the reality of
gangs in the UK and the offending profile of gang
groups.
I have spent the last 89 years contextualising and
redefining the gang. My work offers a critical appraisal
of the dominant discourse around gang-related violence.
I worked for various organisations, including the
Metropolitan Police, The Youth Justice Board, Borough
Councils and charities that want to understand gang
behaviour. Im an applied social researcher, so I have
done a great deal of empirical research with young people
involved in street-based groups or gangs.
Over the last decade, I have worked on a number
of projects focusing on gangs. One, commissioned
by the Youth Justice Board, looked at young womens
involvement in gang-related offending. The research found
that, contrary to the American literature on gangs, there
were no initiation rituals amongst the UK groups sampled
and that young womens involvement in street-based
groups, fighting, and weapons use, was largely minimal in
comparison to their male peers.
I also teach quite a bit. This semester I am running a new
module it is very popular, with 196 students on it! The
focus of the module is on the engagement of youth in
crime and violence. It offers a critical perspective of some
of the dominant theories about young peoples involvement
in deviant and law-breaking behaviour. In the module I
share some of my findings so the students always have
access to new research.

Abby Godwin, Business School graduate,
derivatives funding operations analyst
at Goldman Sachs
Choosing to study at London Met was one of the best
decisions I ever made. With the campus situated in the
heart of the city of London it was easy to network with City
professionals and make practical sense of the complex
financial and economic theories I learnt in class.
I thoroughly enjoyed the course content and the way the
lectures, workshops and assessments were impeccably
delivered and administered. As a single mother I received
incredible support and guidance from both teaching and
non-teaching staff during my studies at London Met.
In my second year, I enrolled on the Short Work Placement
Module with BusinessWorks, as part of my study
programme. With the amazing support and guidance of
London Mets BusinessWorks and the Careers Service, I
managed to secure a five-week placement as an accounts
officer. This helped me sharpen my employability skills
and further prepared me for the corporate world, as later
on I secured a well-paid summer internship with Barclays
Capital through SEO London. Before the start of my
final semester, I began applying for investment banking
graduate positions. Goldman Sachs shortlisted and invited
me to take part in two assessment centres.
Thereafter, in December 2010 I was offered a full-time
position as a derivatives funding operations analyst on
the 2011 Graduate Programme. My job entails liquidity
management, risk and control management, amongst
various other complex tasks. I really enjoy my role and the
people I work with at Goldman Sachs. It feels even more
rewarding to find that a lot of the course material I learnt at
London Met is relevant to my work at Goldman Sachs and
to present day society.
