As the New Year begins, the vision for Canaan in 2015 will be to gravitate from
church work to the work of the church. It is in the work of the church that we are
fulfilling the mission and mandate of Jesus Christ. With Canaan's mission and
core values providing the framework, it's imperative for us to stay focused on the
work of the church. For this reason, this year's traditional direction will shift to
accommodate a more effective direction among all ministries in Canaan. This
new direction will embrace the need of simplifying our ministries in order to
have maximum ministry impact in the church and the community.
Notably, in the book, Simple Church, the authors, Thom S. Rainer and Eric Geiger, emphasized four key points:
* Clarity in ministry
* Movement in ministry
* Alignment in ministry
* Focus in ministry
My preaching and teaching in 2015 will largely deal with these same key points as
some of the traditional activities and celebrations in Canaan are streamlined. For
example, every ministry in the church (40+ ministries) has had or have requested
a day of celebration. If we honored each request, at least over 40 weeks in a year
would be dedicated to anniversaries. As a result and after careful consideration, it
is not practical to have every ministry celebrated over the course of the year at
the expense of the overall mission of the church.
Therefore, in order to accommodate this change in 2015, we will have a Hallelujah Sunday to recognize and celebrate all ministries of the church on one special day in May of 2015. It is very important that every ministry in our church
have this recognition. With this in mind, Hallelujah Sunday will be a new and
exciting day in the life of Canaan, where every ministry in the church comes together in the name of congregational intimacy, with the intent of lifting up Jesus
and church unity.

Canaans Mission Statement

An urban Baptist Church which
serves as a vanguard of liberation,
faith and empowerment through
our Christian witness. Canaans
mission is to do ministry for the
Master through the five-fold
ministries of Discipleship,
Fellowship, Service, Worship and
Evangelism.
Acts 2:42-47

Welcome and Greetings

Thank you for worshipping with us at Canaan Baptist Church. The
corporate life of this congregation is the true witness of the vitality of
our faith. While the high point of our Christian service is to be
found in the experience of Sunday worship, what we do from
Monday to Saturday, speaks volumes about Canaans commitment
and dedication to Christ and our community.
Canaan is a family where all of us are saved sinners hammering out
our salvation under the auspices of Gods amazing grace. We are
structured, but not so structured as to prevent the powerful work of
the Holy Spirit to impact the life of our in-reach and outreach
ministries. We are organized, but not so organized to prevent the
organism, which is the Church, from bearing full life.

We Welcome You!

Vision 2015 (continued from page 1)

Additionally, in 2015, we will see major progress in the Arise & Build campaign with respect to the expectation of breaking ground in preparation for the construction of our new facility.
Our main purpose of building a new facility is to house a growing ministry in order that we may continue to do more for the congregation and community. I truly applaud and commend the Phase 2 and
Arise & Build teams for their steadfast commitment to the process, as well as the tremendous support
from the congregation.
Simultaneously, we will be developing the Canaan Leadership Council (CLC) in the church. The new
council's main purpose will involve spiritual team building, leadership development, and communication focused on a Ministry Action Plan (MAP). Once a MAP has been developed, it will show the commitment of each ministry, what the ministry is designed to do, and how to expand and strengthen the
ministry for maximum impact.
Furthermore, there will be a greater focus and support of the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc. in
2015. As a member church of the convention, my hope is that Canaan will take advantage of the resources and opportunities that the convention offers in order to strengthen our ministry at the local
level. In addition, as a newly appointed Board member of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., I
look forward to representing Canaan and Delaware at the national level in support of our denominational efforts.
Finally, the year 2015 will yield many new souls for Christ and usher in the beginning of a new era in the
life of Canaan Baptist Church. This new era will be focused on simplifying the work of the church,
while maximizing the gifts and resources that God has placed in our congregation. I sincerely thank
each one of you for supporting the vision that God has given me to lead such a great people called Canaan.
Stay Strong!
Dr. Christopher Alan Bullock, Senior Pastor

What Are Your New Year's Resolutions?

Its that time of year again.
Were going to lose weight, exercise more, get out of debt, stick to a budget, stop smoking,
save for the future, and spend more time with family. We make resolutions because we want
to bring change to bear on our circumstances. We want to improve ourselves and our quality
of life. And the top resolutions, for most people, tend to revolve around the same three
poles: money, health and family.
But what would a set of New Years resolutions look like for you and your church, your role
as a leader, or simply as someone who wants to live a life of strategic Kingdom investment?
1. Pray more.
2. Invest in your spiritual gift(s).
3. Get more intentional about evangelism.
4. Care for yourself spiritually.
5. Make the tough decisions you know are best.
6. Confront debilitating patterns of sin.
7. Do the hard work needed to build community.
8. Keep in touch with contemporary culture.
9. Quit comparing yourself to other Christians, other leaders and other churches.
10. Read more.
11. Prioritize your family.
12. Refuse to use ministry to satisfy your personal ambition.
13. Love people, not just crowds.
14. Be more open to change.
15. Stay focused on the vision.
