Visa Over-Stayer To Defend Assault

Charges

A Fijian and two New Zealanders are

likely to defend themselves against
allegations they assaulted a man at
an immigration detention centre in
Australia.
Ratu Seru Qaranivalu and two others
appeared in the Perth Magistrates Court
from prison via video link on Monday.
Australian media report the three men
allegedly assaulted a fellow detainee at
Yongah Hill Detention Centre at midday
on March 5, causing injuries to his face

and head.
After being assessed at the hospital, the
41-year-old victim was taken to Royal
Perth Hospital in a critical condition.
Yongah Hill was set up to house single
male asylum seekers in 2012, but now
contains a mix of asylum seekers and
convicted criminals, including visa overstayers.
The victim and the alleged offenders are
501 detainees people who have had
their visa cancelled under section 501 of

the Migration Act and were awaiting

deportation.
Qaranivalu has pleaded not guilty but
has been refused legal aid, which means
he may have to represent himself at trial.
The court heard it would be problematic
if the three men were granted bail and
released back into immigration custody
at Yongah Hill because evidence may
be contaminated.
All three men are scheduled to appear in
court at later dates.

Retired Officers Wait For Payout

A MAJOR plan is in place for retired and
former police special constables to thank the
Government for initiating the payout they
were supposed to be given 10 years ago.
Former Police Officers Association
executive Tevita Ralulu said this would be
done once Government had completed the
payout process for all those police officers.
With the payout expected to be released

on April 2 as stated earlier by Defence

Minister Timoci Natuva in Parliament,
Mr Ralulu said they hoped to receive
their pay slips soon.
"Normally, pay slips are supposed to be
given out a week before the pay comes.
However, we haven't received any pay
slip as yet," Mr Ralulu said.
"The payout should come in the next

Government pay week, which is next

week."
Mr Ralulu added other agenda on the
meeting included issues he had discussed
with the Commissioner of Police Ben
Groenewald in their meeting last month,
which included the unceremonious
sacking of some police officers by then
Police Commissioners.

The Lagilagi Housing Project has been

described as the best of its kind in the
world.
The plaudits came from Mr Remin
Stoquart, a representative of the United
Nations (UN) Habitat, when he visited
the project on a recent visit to Fiji.
The Peoples Community Network coordinator, Father Kevin Barr, quoted Mr
Stoquart who said, You have one of the
best, if not the best housing project for
the poor I have seen in the whole world
and I am not just saying that.
Father Barr said that these plaudits were
not only for PCN, Fortech Construction,
their architects and their consultants
but also for the Government that had
partnered with them and supported the
project from the beginning.
Without Governments assistance we
could not have gone ahead. And we
look forward to further support so that
the projects can continue for the poorer
section of Fijis population, he said.
According to Father Barr, from the
inception of the project in 2006, Mr
Bainimarama had pushed for subsidised
housing for poorer Fijians.
Then Minister for Finance, Mahendra
Chaudhry also insisted on quality
housing that would last, not pulled down
after a year.

The Prime Minister said one of the 44

units had been converted into a Wellness
Centre, at the request of former Minister
of Health Dr Neil Sharma. The Centre
would be administered by the Ministry
of Health.
Father Barr said that as part of phase two,
that had started, another 76 housing units,
a community hall/office, a kindergarten
and homework centre, a small market,
a Police Post, sports facilities and some
taxi stands would be built.
All these, he said, would depend on the
finance available.

Turagacati, who was a public servant
employed as an acting project accountant
in the then Department of National Roads.

Year 1 Students To Get Weet-Bix With

Milk

The Fijian Government today announced

that all Year 1 students in the country will
get 1 serving of weet-bix with 250ml of
milk on every school day.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama
made the announcement while launching
the Free Milk Initiative at Nakelo District
School in Tailevu.
Im especially delighted to announce
that as well as a free glass of milk a day,
each Class One child will also be given
a serve of Weetbix a day, thanks to the
CJ Patel Group and Fiji Dairy Limited.
They are also very generously providing
you with your very own bowl and spoon.
I wish to thank the CJ Patel Group of
Companies and Fiji Dairy Limited who
have partnered with my Government for
all the hard work it has put in to deliver
this massive logistic undertaking and
have gone the extra mile to ensure that
all class one students receive a healthy
meal every morning.

Primary School and Daku Primary

School, Bainimarama said more than
20,000 children will benefit from the
Free Milk Program across Fiji.
We are building healthy bodies in this
first year of your school lives to help build
healthy minds. To enable you to benefit
fully from the education revolution, we
are pursuing to make you smarter and
turn Fiji into a clever country.
My Government promised through
the FijiFirst manifesto that we would
provide this milk from the start of the
school year. It has taken a bit longer than
we thought but we have been determined
to get the program exactly right for the
sake of every year one child no matter
where they live - and here it is.
Not every Fijian child is privileged
at home to enjoy the benefit of a glass
of milk a day. But for our Year One
students, those days are over. In this
critical first year of school, we are giving
them a nutritional boost to strengthen
their bodies and it doesnt matter who
they are or where they come from. Every
Year One student will benefit.
As with our free education program for
all students in primary and secondary
schools, no longer is a childs family
circumstances the determining factor
in whether he or she receives adequate
nutrition in the first year of primary
school or gets the best possible start in
life.
Whether your parents are well off or
struggling, you are all getting the best
possible chance to have both a healthy
life and a good education, said the
Prime Minister.
And from where I stand as Prime
Minister, nothing that my Government

has ever done is more noble because

by building healthy bodies and healthy
minds, we are building a healthier and
smarter nation for the benefit of every
Fijian now and in the years to come.
As many of you know, Weetbix is a
nutritious breakfast cereal that is high in
fibre and low in sugar. And it contains
many of the vitamins and minerals that
young people also need to give them
energy and the best possible start to the
day.
One Weetbix and a 250 millilitre packet
of milk every school day is a tremendous
boost to the health and well-being of our
Year One children.
He added that though it took the program
some time to get off the ground, both
the Government and the company were
determined to ensure the milk reaches
schools around the country all at the
same time.
These packets have a shelf life of six
months. So there is no question of
the milk being spoilt before it reaches
our children and schools can receive
their supply in bulk to store and use as
needed.
By delivering the milk in this way, it
doesnt matter if you live in a city or
town or in the remotest rural or maritime
community.
We promised to do this and we have
delivered. And I am extremely proud
of the efforts of everyone involved in
rolling out this program that I know
will be appreciated by parents and Year
One students all over the country,
Bainimarama concluded.
The Government announced an
allocation of $3.5m for the Free Milk
Initiative in the 2015 Budget.

Police Officer Convicted Of Rape

A High Court judge in Suva has found a
Police officer guilty of rape.
Justice Salesi Temo overturned a not
guilty verdict of the assessors because
he found both the complainants evidence
as more than credible rather than the
accused.
Tarajiani Bavesi was charged with four
counts of raping two young women in
May, 2013.
Bavesi was investigating the two
complainants on May 13, 2013 for
allegedly stealing a mobile phone.
The complainants were 19 and 20 years
old, and the accused was 38 years old at
the time of the incident.
Justice Temo said the behaviour of
the accused in this case fell below the
standard required of a Police officer
adding that Bavesi had abused his
position of authority.
The court learned that the officer went
to the victims home and requested them
to come to the Nakasi Police Station but
took a short cut through the Nasinu
cemetery.
On their way they stopped at a concrete
grave site.
The accused took the first complainant
(20-year-old) and told another officer
to take the lead with the second
complainant.
The accused and the 20-year-old girl were
alone at the grave site where the accused
forced himself on the complainant and
raped her.
Later he took the complainant to the
Nakasi Police station.
The accused than took the second
complainant (19-year-old) to recover the
alleged stolen mobile phone from the
victims home and again took the short
cut.
On the way the accused stopped at the

Nasinu Cemetery and told the 19-yearold that they could resolve the matter
among themselves.

The accused then forcefully had sex and

oral sex with the victim knowing that the
victim did not consent to the acts.

Fiji To Switch To Digital Television

The Fijian Government has announced
plans to switch from analogue to digital
television.
Making the announcement in Suva, Fijian
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama
said plans have been finalised for the
creation of a National Digital Television
Platform aimed to improve the picture
and sound quality of television programs
and expand the coverage of all broadcast
television channels.
"The digital platform will offer
consumers better reception, more
channels, and access to high definition
and pay per view programming. The
new platform will initially extend the
coverage of all broadcast channels to

94 per cent of the population, marking

a drastic improvement over the current
levels of coverage," Bainimarama
said.
"Also, digital television will work on
current television sets and no satellite
dish is required. All that is needed is a
low cost set top box, which will give
you greater control over programming,
including the ability to choose what
channels are available in your households
if you have children."
The Department of Communications will
oversee the creation of this governmentowned national platform.
Once completed, the platform will be
handed over to FBC to manage and FBC

will form a new transmission company

for this purpose. Broadcasters will then
lease one or multiple digital channels for
fixed annual fees.
Bainimarama said the system will be
completely transparent and the cost to
lease channels will be the same for all
broadcasters, including FBC.
The fixed fees he further says will
replace the need for ongoing investment
in new equipment and infrastructure, as
well as costs for repair and maintenance.
"This means that broadcasters will be
free to focus on providing content and
leave all the work related to transmission
to the platform manager. This is good
news for Fijians."

Fiji Airways Recognises Top Agents

Macquarie
Travelworld
Services
Limited and OneWorld Flight Centre
were recognised by Fiji Airways as its
Gold Award recipients.
This was during the national airlines
annual key partners and travel agents
awards night at Five Princes Hotel in
Suva.
The event was organised to recognise the
hard work and efforts invested from the
various travel agents over the past year.
The annual event was not necessarily
thanking the agents but it was recognition
in terms of how the airline communicates
and relates with the agents.
Fiji Airways Regional general manager
Fiji and Pacific Islands, Robert Rounds,
said: It is important to recognise the
work they put in for Fiji Airways and it
is a way for us to give back.
Recognition is important for us and it is
important for the agents to know that the
airline recognises the effort they make
towards the airline.
The awards
The national airline awarded seven travel
agents under two categories which is the
Gold and Silver.
The Gold Award is given to travel agents
who exceed $5 million revenue.
And agents achieving revenue between
$3 million to $5 million get a silver
award.
Mr Rounds said the event also gave
a chance for interaction between the
airline and the agents themselves.
We are not here to work against the
agents but to recognise the fact that they
are a great part of our airline, they are

info@gobizz.ca

a great part of our distribution channel,

he said.
The airline works very closely with these
travel agents and there are many areas
that the agents can tap into.
However, the agents also play a big role
in contributing to the nation.
Basically, our airline cannot run without
the agents support of the agencies, Mr
Rounds
They have various distribution channels
and we cannot access these. They have
clients which we cannot access and that

is what they are there for and we could

not run without them.
Yet amongst themselves as agents, there
is competition but they do recognise
between each other as to how much
efforts they put in towards the airline.
Mr Rounds explained, the agents
performance was great last year and hopes
they continue to do what they do best.
We did well last year and we have to
do better this year. We have to build
upwards and onwards. We look forward
to the agents support.

$17K For A Lifetime Dream Home

Well-known Suva street beggar Krishna
Kumari fulfilled a lifetime dream when
she received the keys to her new twobedroom home from Prime Minister
Voreqe Bainimarama.
Ms Kumari, who has begged all her life,
saved $19,000. She contributed $17,000
to pay off her $25,000 modest property
at Lagilagi Housing, Jittu Estate, Suva,
with a $8000 donation from the Peoples
Community Network (PCN). The PCN
is a non-governmental organisation
(NGO) helping squatters and lowincome earners to get better housing.
Ms Kumari was among the 44 new home
owners who received keys from Mr
Bainimarama.
Ms Kumari said: Im happy to have a
new home and now Ill be enjoying my
sleep under a roof.
For years, she said, she had lived on the
streets of Suva, braving the wet, cold and
windy nights.
She said she used part of her takings to
pay for food, and banked the rest.
Begging, she said, was not easy but she
had to do it for her survival.

Now, she said, she was doing some small

business for her own survival. She did
not elaborate.
PCNs director Semiti Qalowasa said
when Ms Kumari applied for a house,
they asked her if she was working.
She told us that she was not working
but had been begging on the streets for
years and could pay the amount they
wanted from her, he said.
He said she showed them her bankbook
and when they checked they saw that she
had a balance of $19,000.
We took $17,000 and PCN paid the rest
to pay off her new home, Mr Qalowasa
said.
He said Ms Kumari had really taught
others a good lesson and that was, to
deposit whatever little money they earn
from their work and keep it.
He said when they asked Ms Kumari
why she was keeping that money, she
said she wanted to buy a home.
Mr Qalowasa said PCN had helped her
by giving $8000 to pay off the new home.
Mrs Kumari thanked PCN for the help
it gave.

She also thanked Mr Bainimarama and his

Government in caring for the poor people.
Meanwhile, Teresia Bulileka from
Solodamu, Tavuki, Kadavu thanked the
Bainimarama Government and PCN
after receiving the keys to her new home.
She said she was alone after her husband
left her. She said she was working for a
businessperson.
She lives at St Alesiou at Raiwaqa and
had paid $5000 for her deposit.
Ms Bulileka thanked her boss for helping
her pay the deposit.
She also thanked the Bainimarama
Government for caring for the poor people.
We now know that we have a
Government that really cares for the
people.
Tamarisi Dakai was disappointed that
her husbands name was not called out.
However she was relieved when Mr
Qalowasa assured her she would be
receiving her house keys.
She said her husband had been attending
all the meetings and had paid the deposit.
Mrs Dakai said their new home would be
a new beginning for them.

99-Year Lease Offer For Cane Farmers

SUGAR cane farmers leasing State land
have been guaranteed a 99-year renewal
on expiry if proper documents are
submitted with their applications.
In an effort to encourage an active sugar
cane community in Tavua, a group of
Ministry of Lands officials met farmers
for land lease consultations.
Acting senior lands officer West Vikash
Rao said the 99-year renewal was aimed at
encouraging farmers to renew their leases.
"We want the farmers to come to us with
their grievances about land leases on

State land so that we can sort them out

because at the end of the day, we want
them to continue cultivating their land,"
Mr Rao said.
"And the guarantee for that is once they
apply for a renewal of their leases and
submit the proper documents that we
require and it has been approved by
the Director of Lands, then they will be
given a 99-year lease."
He said the consultations that began
in Tavua would be the start of other
discussions with farmers from other

districts in the Western Division.

"The purpose of this consultation is to
hear the grievances of each farmer and
to find out what kind of problems they
might be facing in terms of renewing
their leases or obtaining an agriculture
lease. Some of the concerns that we've
heard so far is about their leases not
being renewed, there is a delay in the
process of their renewal."
He said it was also important for farmers
to know the processes involved in lease
renewal application.

Brij Lal To Test The Waters On Fiji Ban

An academic who's been banned from returning to his homeland of Fiji says he will test the waters and has reapplied to
get back in.
Fiji's Minister of Immigration Timoci
Natuva said Brij Lal and his wife Padma
Lal can apply to have their ban lifted.
Mr Natuva earlier told parliament the
ban would remain indefinitely because
of Professor Lal's opposition to the move
towards democracy in Fiji.
The couple was deported in 2009
following Professor Lal's vocal criticism
of the Bainimarama regime installed via
a coup three years earlier.
Professor Lal says if he reapplies the
government will have to give him a
reason for the order which makes no
sense after Fiji's elections last year.
"One of the most frustrating things
about all of this is when you write to
responsible officials they simply do not
respond. No one is prepared to tell you
what is happening. They're all looking
over their shoulder to see what [the
Prime Minister] Frank Bainimarama and
his Attorney General (Aiyaz) SayedKhaiyum are thinking," said Brij Lal.

More Technical Colleges

Government intends to have 10 campuses
of the Fiji Technical College (FTC), by
the beginning of next year.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama
revealed this while opening the Dr
Sauhat Ali Sahib Campus in Nadi. It is
the third campus under FTC; the rest are
in Nabua, Suva and Labasa.
This campus of FTC the Dr Sauhat Ali
Sahib Campus- is one of ten campuses
that we intend to have up and running
across Fiji by the beginning of next
year, Mr Bainimarama said.
This one here in Nadi and another two in
Suva and Labasa- and work is proceeding
to establish the remaining seven by
identifying properties and developing new
partnerships such as this one, he said.
Mr Bainimarama said the campuses
would operate under FTC, a new
institution Government build to increase
the skill base of Fijis trades people.
He said, to date, Fiji lacked the ability
to provide broader access to Level Two
Certificates.
The establishment of FTC, he said, filled

this need and provided students with

a more solid grounding in trade work
qualification.
Mr Bainimarama urged every young Fijian
to consider a career as a tradesperson.
He reminded parents to help their
children in their choice of career.
If they show any aptitude or interest in

a trade, encourage them to take that path

as well.
He also encouraged students to extend their
training for further qualification after obtaining
their Level Two Certificate at the College.
Government, he said, was trying to
encourage Fijians to embrace the notion
of a lifetime of learning.

Fire Survivors Thank Govt For Assistance

This will go a long way in helping my

An allocation of $1 million has been
set aside in the 2015 Budget for this
assistance.
In handing over the cheques,
Bainimarama said he hoped the payment
would help families' put the trauma

"To the recipients I say: These cheques
are to assist you in the task of rebuilding
your homes and your lives. I sympathise
with the trauma that you all have been
through.

Germanwings Plane 4U 9525 Crashes In

French Alps - No Survivors

The co-pilot of the Germanwings flight

that crashed in the French Alps, named
as Andreas Lubitz, appeared to want to
"destroy the plane", officials said.
Marseille prosecutor Brice Robin, citing
information from the "black box" voice
recorder, said the co-pilot was alone in
the cockpit.
He intentionally started a descent while
the pilot was locked out.
Mr Robin said there was "absolute
silence in the cockpit" as the pilot fought
to re-enter it.
He said air traffic controllers made
repeated attempts to contact the aircraft,
but to no avail. Passengers could be
heard screaming just before the crash, he
added.
Details are also emerging of the German
co-pilot's past - although his apparent
motives for causing the crash remain a
mystery.
Mr Lubitz, 28, had undergone intensive
training and "was 100% fit to fly without
any caveats", according to Carsten
Spohr, the head of Lufthansa, the
German carrier that owns Germanwings.
Mr Spohr said Mr Lubitz's training had
been interrupted briefly six years ago but
was resumed after "the suitability of the
candidate was re-established".
The Airbus 320 from Barcelona to
Duesseldorf hit a mountain, killing all
144 passengers and six crew, after an
eight-minute descent.
"We hear the pilot ask the co-pilot to
take control of the plane and we hear at
the same time the sound of a seat moving
backwards and the sound of a door
closing," Mr Robin told reporters.

He said the pilot, named in the German

media as Patrick S, had probably gone to
the toilet.

"He operated this button for a reason we
don't know yet, but it appears that the
reason was to destroy this plane."
Mr Lubitz was alive until the final
impact, the prosecutor said.
Mr Robin said "the most plausible
interpretation" was that the co-pilot had
deliberately barred the pilot from reentering the cockpit.
He added that the co-pilot was "not
known by us" to have any links to
extremism or terrorism.
Passengers were not aware of the
impending crash "until the very last
moment" when screams could be heard,
Mr Robin said, adding that they died
instantly.

Hong Kong Man Henry Chau, Who Dismembered

And Cooked Parents, Jailed For Life

A Hong Kong man who killed,

dismembered, salted and cooked his
parents has been sentenced to life in
prison after being found guilty of double
murder.
The conviction of Henry Chau, 31,
concluded a gruesome case that shocked
the city in 2013 when the severed heads
of Chau's elderly parents were found
stuffed into two refrigerators.
During the 20-day trial at the city's high
court, the jury heard how Chau had
dismembered his elderly parents before
salting, cooking and packing their body
parts into lunchboxes "like barbecued
pork".
"Your sentence on Count 1 and Count
2 is that you go to prison for life,"
judge Michael Stuart-Moore told Chau,
referring to the double murder charges.
Sitting in the defendant's dock, Chau,
who wore a loose-fitting grey suit,

info@gobizz.ca

looked impassive as the sentence was

passed down.
Judge Stuart-Moore handed Chau an
additional nine years and four months
in jail for two separate charges of
preventing the lawful burials of his
parents, which he admitted earlier.
The sentences will be served
concurrently, he said.
The judge described Chau as
"narcissistic" and "preoccupied with
fantasies for success".
"In practice, you have no feelings for
other people," he said, adding Chau was
a "highly dangerous individual".
A friend who was earlier accused of
being involved in the killings was found
not guilty. Both had pleaded not guilty to
the murder charges.
The heads of 65-year-old Chau Wing
Ki and his wife Siu Yuet Yee, 62, were
found in March 2013 in two fridges in

604.510.4088

a bloodstained apartment, days after the

elderly couple were reported missing.
Other remains were found in a rubbish
bin and packed into lunchboxes with
rice.
Chau initially told police that his parents
had gone to mainland China, but later
admitted the murder to a friend via a
mobile messaging app.
In evidence read to the court last year,
Chau claimed that he planned to mislead
the police in order to buy himself some
time to say goodbye to friends.
"My murdering partner and I were
planning to make it a missing person
case and dump the body piece by piece,"
he said in a message.
Chau also called himself a "psychopath"
in the messages.
"I cannot empathise with people's
pain because of my experience from
childhood and adolescence," he said.

High Vitamin D Levels May Lead To

Stroke

Too high levels of vitamin D in the blood

may increase your risk of dying from a
stroke, warns a study.
In terms of public health, a lack of
vitamin D has long been a focal point
and several studies have shown that too
low levels can prove detrimental to our
health.
The new study, therefore, suggests
that the level of vitamin D in our
blood should neither be too high nor
to low.
'If your vitamin D level is below 50 or
over 100 nanomol per litre, there is a
greater connection to deaths,' said Peter
Schwarz, professor at the University of
Copenhagen in Denmark.
The researchers studied the level of
vitamin D in 247,574 people and
analysed their mortality rate over a
seven-year period. In that time 16,645
patients had died.
'We have looked at what caused the
death of patients, and when numbers
are above 100, it appears that there is an
increased risk of dying from a stroke or
a coronary,' Schwarz added.

info@gobizz.ca

'In other words, levels of vitamin D

should not be too low, but neither
should they be too high. Levels should
be somewhere in between 50 and
100 nanomol per litre, and our study
indicates that 70 is the most preferable

level,' Schwartz explained.

That having too much vitamin D in our
blood can be bad for our health has never
been proven before, and it may have
great influence on our future intake of
nutritional supplements.

A new research has found that drinking

a cup of black tea can prevent type-2
diabetes in humans.
An American research conducted at
Framingham State University explained
that black tea restrains the body from
absorbing glucose sugars, excess of
which causes type-2 diabetes, the
Independent reported.

The author of research papers said that their

findings suggested that black tea and black
tea pomace had potential for carbohydrate
hydrolyzing enzyme inhibition and this
activity depended on high molecular
weight phenolic compounds.
The researchers also mentioned that just
like green tea, black tea also possesses
antidiabetic activity.

Symptoms Of Kidney Failure

Kidney failure is a very serious health
condition, and one that can bring
on subtle symptoms that often go
undiagnosed. Typically, most patients
that suffer from kidney failure have
lived with kidney disease for quite some
time before it gets to this point. Some
lucky ones can also live with kidney
disease their whole lives, but it never
develop into kidney failure. The most
important thing to do with a kidney
illness is to become well educated about
your ailment. You desperately need your
kidneys to be healthy and working just
fine in order to live a long life. Simple
diagnostics such as blood work or urine
samples can quickly notify your medical
provider if kidney disease is present or
not. Pretty simple trip to the local family
doctor to tell if you have something
that could seriously debilitate your life,
so without hesitation go consult with
your physician if you have any of the
symptoms recognized as kidney failure.
1. Changes in Urination
The kidneys work hard for you all day
long producing urine; when they arent
working up to par they instantly start
showing signs of trouble through your
urine. You may start going more often,
your urine can be various colors such
as very dark orange to almost clear.
You can also begin to notice your urine
bubbling, foaming, or almost looking as
if its boiling. Blood in the urine is also
a telltale sign that kidneys are in trouble.
2. Swollen Limbs
When your kidneys stop working
normally, they store that extra fluid
anywhere they can find a space at within
the body. This means the patient may
have legs that are swollen, arms, hands,
or their face. Most patients notice their
ankles swelling first, or a puffy face out
of nowhere.
3. Exhaustion
Your kidneys are hard workers, they not
only make urine all day long, but they
also produce EPO which is a hormone
thats required to create red blood cells.
This results in a case of anemia, which
thankfully can be easily treated by
your doctor. Many kidney patients feel
they are tired or fatigued from doing
absolutely nothing.
4. Itchy Skin
The kidneys also take waste particles
out of the blood, so when yours are not
up to par youll end up with backed up
waste traveling through your blood.

info@gobizz.ca

This generally begins to show signs of

occurrence through causing dry, itchy
skin patches on the body. Many patients
feel the itching is so severe they were
distracted by it most of the day prior to
getting their kidney diagnosis.
5. Foul Taste in Mouth
When the patient suffers from kidney
issues, it also suffers from uremia;
which is when the waste particles
develop excessive buildup inside and
you gain a metallic taste in the mouth in
return. Some report they no longer could
consume some of their favorite foods,
such as meats, or breads due to the taste.
6. Vomiting
No one ever enjoys vomiting, and sadly
it is a very popular side effect of kidney
failure. Patients experience the itchy skin
first, then the constant nausea, followed
by a few days of vomiting. This is why
many assume they have the flu or even
food poisoning and dont seek treatment
for their kidney issue early enough to
prevent it from becoming severe.
7. Inability to Breathe
When you begin to have trouble
breathing, you know something in
the body isnt sitting well. Catching
your breath, paying more attention to
when you inhale and exhale, or having
difficulty breathing while your activity
level is low are all symptomatic of
kidney failure. The reason for this is due
to fluid traveling to the lungs, and the
body being deprived of red blood cells
from the lack of regular kidney function.
8. Memory Issues
As you get older, you tend to naturally

become more forgetful; that isnt the

kind of memory loss kidney illness
causes. This version is more of a lack
in concentration initially, followed by
dizzy spells, resulting in memory issues.
All developing in lieu of an oxygen
deficiency caused by the kidney induced
anemia.
9. Cold or Chilly
Often women are usually colder than
men, but this type of cold sensation is
caused even when its in the dead of a
sweltering summer. It is a sign of anemia
taking its course, and causing your
temperature to be challenging to sustain.
Increasing your iron intake, drinking
more water, and of course getting your
kidneys evaluated will all aide in curing
this symptom.
10. Flank Pains
Many experience what is known as
flank pain, which is basically soreness
near the top of the abdomen, sides
of the midsection, or middle portion
of the back. This location coincides
with where the kidneys are kept, and
can be an indication of severe kidney
disorder. Most patients experience flank
pains after their diagnosis or once their
condition has gone from bad to worse.
Kidneys are not something to let linger
on bothering you; if you feel pain,
or soreness at any point that doesnt
subside in a day or two, consult with
your medical professional. Additionally,
if your urinary patterns have drastically
changed, or if you notice blood in your
urine - make an appointment to be
evaluated just to be on the safe side.

How To Reduce Salt In Your Diet

Too much of sodium content in your diet can increase your cholesterol levels
leading to an increased risk of heart attack and other cardiovascular issues.

While salt is an essential ingredient in

any recipe you cook, here are some ways
to reduce the intake of sodium.
- If you are cooking using a recipe
book, add less than the amount of salt
mentioned.
- According to studies, most of the
additional seasonings you add to your
food contain about 95% salt. So, while
making pasta, add fresh herbs instead of
using herb seasoning or freshly chopped
garlic instead of garlic powder.
- Choose healthier options at a grocery
store. Often, packaged foods tend to be
high in sodium content because it helps

604.510.4088

preserve them for longer. Read the food

labels carefully for nutritional facts.
- Go for fresh or frozen veggies instead
of their canned varieties, which often
contain added salt to help increase shelf
life.
- Olives and pickles are saturated in salt,
as are many smoked and cured meats,
like salami and bologna. Limit your
intake of these high-sodium foods.
- Add fresh lemon instead of salt when
marinating fish or other vegetables.
- Cut down on sodium-rich condiments
such as soy or mustard sauce and
ketchup.

Foods To Eat Every Day For A Longer,

Healthier Life

It may seem like dietary boredom to eat

certain foods every day, but luckily we
live in the land of plenty and there are a
number of variations for each of the foods
below, all of which are so nutritionally
dense they are worth eating on a daily
basis. Plus, they will fit into your diet even
if you're a vegetarian or a vegetarian.
Raw Nuts
The laundry list of reason to eat raw nuts
(roasting nuts damages some of their
healthy oils) is ever-growing and while
almonds get the most attention, pistachios,
walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, peanuts,
cashews, macadamias basically all
raw nuts that aren't salted, honey-roasted
or candied offer benefits ranging from
weight management and glycemic control
to better heart health and lower cholesterol.
Berries
Antioxidants are critical for helping
our bodies fight the damage of illnesscausing free radicals and berries are
loaded with a number of powerful
antioxidants, including anthocyanins,
quercetin and vitamin C (kale and
spinach are the only vegetables with
antioxidant levels as high as berries).
They're also high in water and fiber,
so they're great for weight loss as they
make you feel fuller, faster.

info@gobizz.ca

Almond Milk
Soy and dairy milk are very controversial,
so instead opt for almond milk. Not only
is it low in calories (only 30 per serving;
about 1/4 of regular soy or 2% milk),
but since it's made from almonds, it also
has most of the nutrients that you'd find
in the nuts like vitamin E, magnesium,
monounsaturated fats, manganese,
calcium, copper and riboflavin. It's
also low in fat, heart-healthy, great for
your skin (thanks to the vitamin E) and
because of its low glycemic index, the
body will use the carbs as energy so the
sugars arent stored as fat.
Dark Leafy Greens
Kale, Swiss chard, spinach, broccolithe
options are endless. These leafy vegetables
are full of fiber, vitamins and minerals to
help protect against heart disease, diabetes,
cancer and a host of other ailments.
Cinnamon
A versatile spice, it can help lower blood
sugar levels and other cardiovascular
disease risk factors, and many studies have
shown that it helps curb appetite. For a
look at other spices to add to your diet,
Sprouts
Wheatgrass, alfalfa, sunflower, pumpkin,
green leaf, lentilsprouts come in such
a wide range that they're incredibly

604.510.4088

versatile. Hardier ones like mung or lentil

can easily be heated, making them a great
addition to soups or stews, while the
more delicate ones like alfalfa are great
for salads and sandwiches. No matter
which you opt for, they're all packed
with vitamins A, B, C and E, calcium,
iron and magnesium. Plus, sprouting at
home is a pretty easy process.
Flaxseed
Once a niche food item, flaxseed is now
found in countless forms, from oil to
crackers. What makes it such a great
dietary addition is that it's packed with
heart-healthy omega-3 essential fatty
acids, lignans (a chemical compound
with potent antioxidant powder
flaxseed contains 75 to 800 times more
lignans than other plant foods) and fiber.
Water
Turns out that drinking eight glasses of
water a day is a myth the number you
need depends on a number of physical
and dietary factors but within reason,
drinking more than the recommended
amount isn't a bad thing. Water is critical
to stay healthy as well as energized and
drinking it before meals helps you eat
less, since thirst is often mistaken for
hunger. It's also good for your skin and
boosts your metabolism.

Tips On How To Impress Your Mom-In-Law

So he proposes you in the most romantic way ever and you have said a 'yes.' And with that you have started to think, plan
and fix a lot of things in order to get the ball rolling for your D-day.
But before you do that take a step back
and plan things to make friends with
your mother-in-law. Though all MILs
aren't really that scary and typically
Indian serial like, but it's always good to
start bonding with her before her so once
you are married and start living with her
you know. So here are few tips which
will help you to break the ice between
you and your mom-in-law.
1. Do your homework first: Ask your
fianc what she likes and dislikes. What
are her hobbies and how she likes to
unwind. Once you know what kind of a
person she is and what really makes her

happy, then it becomes easy for you to

break the ice even in the most difficult
situation.
2. Dress to impress: Whether you notice
or not but your mother-in-law will notice
the way you have dressed. We aren't
asking you to dress like a princess but
clothes that aren't ironed or clothes that
are out of place and doesn't suit the
occasion might not go down well with
her. So put that little extra time and dress
well so that she's impressed.
3. Seek her advice: Yes, you are an
independent woman and have taken all
your life decisions on your own, but

there's no harm in taking your mom-inlaw's advice or suggestions. After all she
has seen the world more than you and
who knows her advice can help you to
make a better decision.
4. Meet her often: Before and after
marriage meet her often and spend
time with her. Try and make a bond
just like the one you shared with your
mom.
5. Be open in communication: Always
keep the door of communication open
when talking with her. Talk her as much
as possible and keep her updated about
what's going on in your life.

Life Changing Makeup Tips No Girl

Should Live Without

1. Make lipstick smudge less and last

longer
No one likes messy, smudgy lipstick.
Soon after you apply lipstick, place
a tissue over it and dab it with some
powder using a brush. The lipstick gets
cemented, and stays intact the entire day.
2. Ensure eyelashes remain curled
Eyelashes often tend to stubbornly refuse
to remain curled. All you need to do is
gently heat your eyelash curler using a
hairdryer (not over a candle flame) and
curl the lashes when curler is hot. You
will be surprised to note that the eyelashes
remain curled throughout the day.
3. Make perfume linger
Perfume tends to wear off quicker than
expected. A neat way to ensure that the
perfume you wear lingers the entire day
is to apply Vaseline and spray perfume
over it.
4. Keep stray hair in place

Does a clump of hair keep straying away

from position often? Use some clear
mascara and pat the stubborn bit of hair
in position. It stays that way until the end
of the day, and is quite easy to shampoo
away as well.
5. Get that wide-eyed look
You can make your eyes look naturally
wider. Simply brush your mascara
downwards, instead of using the usual
upward stroke. This makes the eyelashes
appear fuller, and the eyes look bigger
too.
6. Homemade lip gloss
Lip-gloss is expensive, so why not
make some yourself. Do not discard
broken eye shadows, just crush it into a
fine powder and mix it with petroleum
jelly. Hey presto! You have your own
homemade lip-gloss.
7. Avoid smudging your teeth with
lipstick

You often encounter the problem of

lipstick smudging your teeth. The best
way to avoid this is to simply put your
forefinger into your mouth and close
your lips tightly. The excess lipstick gets
transferred to your finger.
8. Reuse dried mascara
Do not discard mascara when it dries up.
An easy way to moisturize it is to add a
bit of saline solution to it. Leave it for a
few minutes and it is as good as before.
9. Apply dry shampoo overnight
Apply dry shampoo overnight and let it
work on your hair thoroughly. Wake up
and wash it off, and you will notice that
your hair looks a lot more voluminous.
10. Use old T shirt for drying hair
Do not brush your hair violently with a
towel. Use an old T-shirt instead, and you
will notice that the soft material creates
less friction. Your hair will be less frizzy
and a lot softer.

Tips To Reduce Facial Hair Growth

Even though it is normal for women to sport some amount of facial fuzz, many find it annoying. Here are some tips to help
you reduce facial hair Add 30 grams of sugar to some lemon
juice in a bowl of water. Mix well and
apply it in the direction of the hair
growth. Leave this for 15 minutes and
rinse. Repeat once a week.
The traditional mixture of gram
flour, turmeric and curd is said to
marginally reduce hair growth. Apply

info@gobizz.ca

this mixture on your face and rinse it

once it dries.
A mixture of papaya and turmeric helps
contain hair growth, and what's more,
it also exfoliates the skin. Massage the
paste on your face for 15 minutes for
best results.
Potato, a bleaching agent, when mixed

604.510.4088

with yellow lentil paste makes the hair

colour lighter and also helps remove
unwanted facial hair. Apply and leave
for 15 minutes before rinsing.
A banana-oatmeal scrub is simple, yet
effective. Apply the paste for about 15
minutes and wash off with water. Repeat
this twice a week.

Saying "No" To Everything

Your toddler's constant use of the word "no" stems from a strong desire to be independent. Here's how to cope.
Your toddler's desire for independence
can mean she displays a lot of
unreasonable negative behaviour that's
puzzling or, at worst, irritating.
Common examples include a refusal to
let you strap her into her buggy, turning
down food she enjoyed last week and
insisting you carry out an impossible task,
such as finding a favourite toy that's been
left at home when you're on a journey.
This difficult phase may not last long in
some toddlers, but for others it can go
on for many months or even continue
into later childhood. This can be hard for
some parents to handle.
It helps to realise this behaviour is a
normal developmental stage - toddlers
are just trying their new-found will as
they make a bid for independence.
Positive steps
You'll keep your sanity if you make
an effort at the beginning of the
toddler stage to 'toddler-proof' your
home - this cuts down on the need
for unnecessary battles.
It helps if she doesn't get too tired
or hungry - regular mealtimes and
bedtimes make a big difference.
Make a determined effort to keep
your use of the word "no" to a
minimum - as far as possible, make
your requests positive, "keep your
bike on the pavement" rather than
"don't go on the road".
If you have to refuse a request, use
phrases such as "great idea, we'll
play that later" instead of "no, I'm
too busy to play with you".
If your toddler is strong-willed and
often challenges you, do your best to
be patient and remember this stage
won't last forever.
Toddlers need to try out things for
themselves as often as possible, so
try not to be too controlling - for
example, it can help to let your child
climb into her car seat instead of
being placed there by you.
When it has to be "no", for safety
reasons perhaps, make it calm and
firm - show your toddler you mean
it, but don't get angry.
For younger toddlers you may have
to add actions to your words - lift
her away from the video machine or
plug, and offer a toy to take her mind
off it.
Use clever tactics - "I bet I can race
you to get your shoes on" often
works better than "get your shoes on

info@gobizz.ca

now".
Offer your toddler choices, within
limits, to keep battles to a minimum,
so that "no" is a less likely response
- "do you want to wear your red skirt
or black trousers?" or "would you
like an apple or an orange?", for
example.
Use praise when she's good
to encourage her to repeat the
behaviour.
One of the most useful techniques
with toddlers is distraction, and you
should use it for as long as it works "I think I hear Daddy's car arriving"
or suddenly starting a song often
makes toddlers forget they were
about to start a battle.
Try not to laugh at your toddler when
she says "no" - it can be tempting

when it's amusing, but this is likely

to upset a small child who takes her
independence seriously.
When you can, try to explain why
some behaviour isn't acceptable
- as your child gets older, she'll
understand more about this, but it
can start very soon - "touching that
might break it" or "that's hot and
you'll burn".
Use delaying words - "later perhaps"
or "not until after lunch".
Offer alternatives - "you can't write
on the wall, but you can write on this
piece of paper".
Lighten up - does whatever it is
they're doing really matter?
Keep a positive attitude - look for
good behaviour and praise your
child

It might not be a very good week for you.

You need to be more brave and confident.
You need to rely only on yourself and not
be dependent on anyone else. You have
to plan your week well in advance and
prioritize all the tasks in hand. This will
help in completing all activities on time.
You might have a lot of expenditure to
meet this week. Closely monitor your
funds and do not overspend. You need
to be friendly with your partner. Do
not display any negative feelings since
it might disturb the harmony in the
relationship. Try to be as friendly as you

'Jai Ho Democracy', Mainstream Film

Sans The Khans: Om Puri
Veteran actor Om Puri, who will be next
seen in "Jai Ho Democracy", says the
political comedy is as mainstream as
any other 'masala' film -- just that it's
without any of the celebrity Khans of
tinsel town.
Talking about "Jai Ho Democracy", Om
said: "These kind of films have small
budgets, but I want to tell you all that it's
a mainstream film. It's just that there are
no Khans in this film."
He assures us that the movie has "all the
masala" that a mainstream Hindi film
has.
The film takes a comic look at how the
powers-that-be continue to procrastinate
and maintain status quo, unfazed by the

gravity of the situations at hand.

It also explores the funny side of how
the media gets desperate in highlighting
unworthy issues, apart from giving a
message of hope for peace between two
neighbouring countries.
Hopeful that the movie will gain through
word of mouth, he said: "Such a film will
have an effect on only a few people. But
even if it makes a 10 percent difference
(in society), then one feels it is in the
right track. Such films should be made
for the better."
Written and directed by Ranjit Kapoor,
"Jai Ho Democracy" also features Annu
Kapoor, Seema Biswas, Adil Hussain
and Satish Kaushik.

Sanjay Gupta Takes Break From 'Jazbaa'

For Son

Sanjay Gupta is enjoying "chilling"

after "hectic" days of filming his actiondrama! The filmmaker, who has been
working on "Jazbaa", took time out for
his son's fourth birthday and went for a
special outing.
"My baby boy Shivaansh turned four
and we spent the day at his favourite
Imagica. And now chilling in Khandala.
He loves it here," Gupta tweeted.
Gupta also made the most of the trip,
where his son's school friends had
accompanied them too.
"In the Maharaja's chair at Funky
Monkey
celebrating
Shivaansh's
4th Happy Birthday with his school
friends," the director posted alongside a
photograph in which he is seen sitting on
a quirky inflated chair.
He says he's glad that his son "knows his
mind".
"Even at 4 Shivaansh knew exactly how
he wanted to celebrate his b'day. Funky
Monkey w/friends & Imagica w/family."
Gupta has been busy working on
"Jazbaa", the first look of which will be
launched in April.
"Last few days have been so damn hectic.
Today is purely for chilling in Khandala
doing absolutely nothing," Gupta shared

on Twitter.
His action-packed project, marking
Aishwarya Rai's comeback, also stars

Irrfan Khan, Anupam Kher, Atul

Kulkarni, Chandan Roy Sanyal and
Shabana Azmi.

Ranbir Kapoor And Katrina Kaif

Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif have
been the most talked about couple in
B-town. They have also been making
public appearances together, partying
till wee hours, and even going out of the
way to spend time together.
In the past, Katrina has also enjoyed a
lunch date with Ranbir's mother, Neetu
Singh. After so much of exposure, the
duo has forever maintained a dignified
silence on their relationship status.
Reportedly, the duo recently hosted a
housewarming party at their new pad.
Katrina Kaif was a part of Arpita Khan's
wedding festivities, including the 'kalira'
ceremony.
According to a report an onlooker said
that the leaf from the 'kalira' fell on
Katrina, suggesting that she is the one
to tie the knot next! While the whole of
B-town knows about their alleged affair,
it is time the duo accepts it too.

Shahid Kapoor To Marry Or Not

The Vivah actor is ready to get
married. After being the center of
affairs and break ups, Shahid Kapoor
would be finally taking the vows. It was
in January that he got engaged to Mira
Rajput who is a Delhi based girl. The
engagement took place on 14 January,
Makar Sankranti. The two would be
getting married in December. It has
been reported that Shahid and Mira
got to know each other through Radha
Soami Satsang Beas.
Mira Rajput is presently pursuing
English (Hons) at Lady Sri Ram College
for Women and is in her third year.
There are rumors that Shahid had been
to Chhatarpur along with his father
to meet the brides parents. After the
engagement, Shahid and Mira have been
trying to avoid the shutterbugs or let the
media make any news out of it.
Now that the actor has decided to settle
down, controversies are not leaving
him even at this point. If fresh reports
are to be believed, no such marriage is
taking place! Here is what Mira Rajputs
classmate has revealed, Mira has
clearly said that she isn't dating or getting
married to Shahid Kapoor, who is elder
to her by 13 years. She did say, though,
that Shahid is a family friend. Mira is a
very private person, who prefers to hang
out with a very few friends. She is a
rather focused and intelligent girl, who
is quite vocal about her opinions.

Though a source might have denied

claims about the marriage, the actors
latest statement imply that something
might actually be going on. Some time
ago, Shahid had expressed his desire
about what kind of girl he wanted to
marry. He said that he wanted to get
married to someone who doesnt belong
to the film industry so it will help him in
seeing life from a different perspective.
Shahid had even said to the media, I am
available and koi bhi achi ladki chahe

toh.. I am available. I dont have any

reservations for marriage.
Since the news of marriage is out, one
can very well guess that it would be the
hot topic on which social media site. It is
of course Twitter that is most concerned
about the actors marriage. Twitteratis
cant stop posting comments like So
after Kareena Kapoor married a guy
10 years older to her, Shahid Kapoor

Actress Deepika Padukone, who will

In the years I have known Amitji outside

naturally. I remember him mentioning
that I remind him of his daughter and
he is also very protective about me. Our
chemistry in the film is very organic,

trailer launch.
Directed by Shoojit Sircar and written by
Juhi Chaturvedi, Piku features Amitabh,
Deepika and Irrfan in lead and is slated
for May 8 release.
However, the film also saw a very unusual
promotion where parents were invited
for the trailer launch and according to
reports it was Deepikas idea.
Somewhere we have all contributed
in whatever way possible. The film
itself is a very personal journey of Piku
and Baba. Its more than the story its

about the characters. Even in terms of

our communication, we have kept it as
intimate and as personal as possible.
We hope all of you liked the idea, she
said.
Irrfan says all aspiring actors should
observe Amitabhs work. It was a great
experience for me and if any actor wants
to be an actor, they have to observe Big
B and thats compulsory. He follows
the directors vision obediently and is
always playful. We all were emotional
towards the end of the shoot of this
film, he said.

Why Has Helen Refused To Promote Her

Comeback Film

Helen refuses to promote her comeback film 'Bachpan Ek Dhokha' over 'objectionable' religious references

Bollywood's original dancing queen

Helen is all set to return to the big screen
with a musical thriller titled 'Bachpan Ek
Dhokha', but she has refused to promote
the film. Reason? She is said to be upset
about a particular scene involving a
Jesus Christ statue.
Says a source, "There is a sequence
showing Padmini Kolhapure in front
of Christ's statue and being flogged. In
one shot it appears that the whip hits the
statue. When Helen got to know about it,
she raised objections and argued with the
director. She also informed co-star Tom
Alter about the scene and he echoed her
sentiments."
Director Rajiv Verma apparently pacified
the actors at that time, saying that it
would be taken care of during the postproduction stage. "But he went back on
his word and so, Helen has decided not
to promote the film," adds the source.
Verma says he has already secured a 'U'
certificate from the Censor Board without
any cuts. "While shooting that whipping
sequence, we had Jesus Christ's statue as

the background so I focussed on him.

When Helen saw the scene, she created
a ruckus on the set. Though I had told
her about editing it out, I could not
remove it. It's important from the story's

604.510.4088

point of view. I tried convincing her, but

she doesn't want to promote the film.
Though she gave me her blessings, she
has stopped answering my calls," he
added.

from international football
Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced
on Wednesday that the club has signed
experienced striker Robert Earnshaw
- pending receipt of his international
transfer certificate. Per Major League
Soccer and club policy, terms of the deal
were not disclosed.
Whitecaps FC striker Robert Earnshaw
59 international caps with Wales,
scoring 16 goals
Scored 216 career goals in over 500
matches at the club level in England,
Scotland, Israel, Canada, and the United
States

country
Im very excited to officially join
Whitecaps FC and be a part of this great
organization, said Earnshaw. The club
has treated me well since Ive been here.
Im thrilled to help the team continue to
progress, while bringing enjoyment and
passion to my new team.
The 33-year-old striker joins Whitecaps
FC after trialling with the team in
preseason. Over the past two seasons
in MLS, Earnshaw has accumulated
11 goals, while starting 24 of his 31
appearances. Last season, Earnshaw
scored three goals in only 174 minutes
with Chicago Fire. In 2013, the Welshman
netted eight goals while starting 23 of his
26 appearances with Toronto FC.
A product of Cardiff Citys youth
program,
Earnshaw
made
his
professional debut with the senior side
in 1998. Through 2004, Earnshaw made
201 appearances and scored 105 goals
across all competitions for Cardiff.
In 2004, Earnshaw joined English
Premier League side West Brom Albion,

Earnshaw also confirmed on Wednesday

that he is retiring from international

football. In more than a decade playing
with Wales, Earnshaw earned 59 caps
and scored 16 goals.
First off, congratulations to Earnie on
a fantastic international career, said
Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson.
I had the privilege of representing Wales
together with Earnie and he always gives
his all in everything he does. Not only
is he a natural goalscorer, he will also
bring great character and leadership to
our locker room, while passing along
his experience to our young group of
forwards.
Born in Mufulira, Zambia, Earnshaw
moved to Wales when he was nine years
old and made his senior debut for the
Welsh national team on May 13, 2002.
In his debut appearance, Earnshaw
scored the winning goal in a 1-0 victory
over 2002 FIFA World Cup finalists
Germany at Millennium Stadium, in
Cardiff Wales.
I fell in love with football ever since
I was a kid and went to my first Wales
game, added Earnshaw. It has been a
dream come true to have the opportunity
to walk out in front of the whole nation
and represent Wales in so many important
games. I am honoured and proud to play
for my country for over a decade. I am
also extremely thankful for the support
Ive received over the years from all my

Welsh teammates, coaches, and staff and

will be forever grateful because I know
I've been in a position that millions dream
of. I gave it my all in every minute and
shared all the jubilations of scoring goals
with the people of Wales. The pleasure
has truly been all mine."
Earnshaw is the only player to record

How The Vancouver Millionaires Won The

1915 Stanley Cup And Revolutionized Hockey
Thursday
marked
the
100-year
anniversary of Vancouvers first and
only Stanley Cup victory.
Of course it was the Vancouver Millionaires,
not the Canucks, who captured Lord
Stanleys mug way back in 1915. The
Millionaires defeated the Ottawa Senators 3
games to 0 on March 26, 1915.
Vancouvers place in hockey history is
an interesting one, as it was Frank and
Lester Patrick that modernized the game
here on the west coast:
In 1912 they founded a new league
on the West Coast, built huge new
arenas, and revolutionized our game to
showcase speed and creativity. They
introduced forward passing, the blue
line, line changes, delayed penalties, and
the penalty shot. They placed numbers
on players sweaters, introduced the
scoring concept of assists and allowed
goaltenders to leave their feet to make
a save. They created the first playoff
system in North American sports, the
one we still use today. This was the birth
of modern hockey.
I think I saw the Canucks play a few
games last year under Torts without any
forward passing.
The Canucks wore their Millionaires
retro jerseys when they hosted the
Colorado Avalanche on Thursday.
Lets get back to the Millionaires.
The Vancouver Millionaires Stanley
Cup win predated the NHL, which was
founded in 1917. Back in 1915, it was
a challenge cup, with the best team

from the National Hockey Association

playing a best-of-five series against the
best team from the Pacific Coast Hockey
Association.
Vancouver became the first team from
the west coast to ever win the Cup,
which must have come as a big surprise
to the Senators. Ottawa was so confident
in a win in Vancouver, they didnt bother
to bring the Stanley Cup with them:
There was no parade, no on-ice
presentation. The Senators, so confident
they would easily dispatch the upstart
Millionaires, had not even brought the
Stanley Cup with them to Vancouver.
After the final game, the exhausted
and defeated Senators crowded into
the Millionaires dressing room to

The Vancouver Canucks signed

defenceman Chris Tanev to a five-year
contract extension Tuesday.
Tanev has 16 points on two goals and
14 assists this season and is now signed
through 2021.
"Chris has developed into an excellent
NHL defenceman and is an extremely
important part of our team," Canucks
GM Jim Benning said in a statement.
"He's a player you want on the ice in the

most critical points of a game and we're

excited about having him with our group
as we continue to play to win today, with
an eye to the future."
The 25-year-old's contract is reportedly
worth US$22.25 million with a salarycap hit of $4.45 million.
In 216 career games with Vancouver,
Tanev has 10 goals and 33 assists
The Toronto native leads the Canucks in
blocked shots with 153.

congratulate them. The new style of

hockey had beaten the old. It wasnt even
close. The hockey world took notice.
And our game was set on a new course
that favoured speed, skill and creativity.
Who needs the Stanley Cup when you
can get a hearty handshake instead?
The Stanley Cup arrived in Vancouver
eventually though:
The Stanley Cup finally arrived in
town on May 12, long after most of the
Millionaires had left town.
I guess I cant blame them for looking
upset.
Anyway, it was a great night as the
Canucks wore the Millionaires jerseys
once again, this time hopefully with a
better result.
