Unit 2: How to Manage

2.1. What do I want to do?

Perhaps the first thing you need to do is to figure out what you want your people to
accomplish. A mission statement is a short document that tells your people, your
customers (internal and external), and your suppliers what you are about. It makes it
easier for everyone to pull together if everyone knows w hat the objective is. How to
Draft a Mission Statement lists twelve things you can do to start drafting a mission
statement for your group.
2.1.1. Mission Statement
A m i ssion statement is a statement of the purpose of a company, organization or person,
its reason for existing.
The mission statement should guide the actions of the organization, spell out its overall
goal, provide a path, and guide decision-making. It provides "the framework or context
within which the company's strategies are formulated."
Effective mission statements start by cogently articulating the organization's purpose.
Mission statements often include the following information:

Aim(s) of the organization

The organization's primary stakeholders: clients/customers, shareholders,
congregation, etc.
How the organization provides value to these stakeholders, for example by
offering specific types of products and/or services
A declaration of an organization's sole core purpose. A mission statement
answers the question, "Why do we exist?"

A commercial mission statement consists of 3 essential components:

1. Key market who is your target client/customer? (generalize if needed)
2. Contribution what product or service do you provide to that client?
3. Distinction what makes your product or service unique, so that the client would
choose you?
Examples of mission statements that clearly include the 3 essential components:
For example:

McDonalds - "To provide the fast food customer food prepared in the same highquality manner world-wide that is tasty, reasonably-priced & delivered
consistently in a low-key dcor and friendly atmosphere."
o Key Market: The fast food customer world-wide
o Contribution: tasty and reasonably-priced food prepared in a high-quality
manner
o Distinction: delivered consistently (world-wide) in a low-key dcor and
friendly atmosphere.

The Walt Disney Company's objective is to be one of the world's leading producers and
providers of entertainment and information, using its portfolio of brands to differentiate
its content, services and consumer products. The company's primary financial goals are
to maximize earnings and cash flow, and to allocate capital profitability toward growth
initiatives that will drive long-term shareholder value.
2.1.2. Basi c gui del i nes i n w ri t i ng a m i ssi on st at em ent
Your mission st at em ent i s about you, your com pany, and your i deal s. Read other
companies mission statements, but write a statement that is about you and not some
other company. Make sure you actually believe in what youre writing; your customers
and your employees will soon spot a lie.
D ont box yourself in. Your mission statement should be able to withstand the changes
that come up over time in your product or service offerings, or customer base. A
cardboard box company isnt in the business of making cardboard boxes; its in the
business of providing protection for items that need to be stored or shippe d. The
broader understanding helps them see the big picture.
K eep i t short . The best mission statements tend to be three to four sentences long.
Ask for i nput . Run your mission statement draft by your employees. Is it clear and easily
understood, or does it sound like something from the Dilbert Mission Statement
Generator?
Ai m for substance, not superlat i ves. Avoid saying how great you are, what great quality
and what great service you provide.

2.2. How should I set it up?

After you figure out where you are going and you write up your mission statement, you
need to look at whether your organization supports that objective. If your organization
does not support your objective, you need to change it so it does. When you have
rearranged your organization so it does support your objective, you need to
communicate that organization structure to everyone involved. This is done through an
organization chart, an org chart for short. How to Build an Org Chart is a quick guideline
on how to draw an org chart for a department. You can easily expand it out for an entire
company.

establishing, maintaining, or defying social group norms, and appreciating comfort and
functionality.

2.4. Is Management For Me?

2.4.1. The Upside of Being a Manager
There are many positives to being a manager:
Managers generally are paid more than others in the company.
They appear to have more power.
And the power and pay differences tend to give the position more status or
prestige.
Pay Certainly the top manager in a company, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is paid
more than anyone else in the company. Managers below the CEO are generally paid
more than everyone in their group as well, but not always. I managed a group of
scientists in which the very top scientists were paid more than I. Smart companies pay
their people based on their value to the company, not on their title or position, and in
that company, key scientists were more valuable than their manager.
Power Most people, including most managers, believe that managers hav e more power
than the people in their groups. While it's true that managers commonly have certain
functional authority delegated to them, like setting work schedules for the group, true
power cannot be delegated to you from above.
