Church Life
FaithWorks Newsletter
A church newsletter begins in February called FaithWorks,
a Journal of the Spiro First United Methodist Church. The
newsletter ministry will have announcements and news
from the church’s ministries, a short message from Gary, a monthly calendar, recognition of
members’ special days and achievements, and more. FaithWorks is edited by Kathy Early
and is scheduled to be out this week.
Construction Work on Gutters and Interior Complete
The final payment was made last week on the gutter project! While the payment was
made from funds on hand, not all the cost of this upgrade has been yet funded through
special offerings or pledges. Please consider this need in your personal stewardship
ministry.
Some have mentioned how nice it would be to have an open house now that the work
is complete. Gary talked to the crews this week about attending and they were receptive.
It would be nice if we could coordinate this with a visit from Linda Harker for a dedication
service.
Visioning Conference Planned
At Church Council meeting there was consensus for a visioning conference in February
to suggest, discuss, and adopt a ministry action plan for carrying out our mission and
ministries in the coming year. These are exciting days at FUMC with a lot happening and a
lot of opportunities. Please be thinking and praying about the ideas you may want to
bring to a visioning meeting. An idea starter might be: What might happen if…?
Haiti Health Kits Received
The church has received numerous Health Kits for the Haiti Relief call that went out
after that country was devastated by an 7.0 earthquake. We received an email that the
health kits are being sent to a receding point in Louisiana next week. We’ll send the ones
we have out, but it is not too late to bring in some more.
Lenten Emphasis
Description of Study Materials
No single event in human history has received more attention than the
suffering and crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth. In this book, Adam
Hamilton guides us through the last twenty-four hours of Jesus' life.
Each chapter is designed to help the reader experience and understand the significance
of Jesus' suffering and death in a way you have never done before. Whether readers are
long-time Christians or simply curious about the story of Christ's crucifixion, they are invited
to join the author in retracing the last 24 hours of Jesus' life.
Chapter Titles
The Last Supper
The Garden of Gethsemane
Condemned by the Righteous
Jesus, Barabbas, and Pilate
The Torture and Humiliation of the King
The Crucifixion
Christ the Victor
A companion DVD takes us to the Holy Land with Adam Hamilton to visit the sites where
those earth-shaking events took place. We walk where Jesus walked and see what he may
have seen, along the road that led to the pain and triumph of the cross.
Reading the text, participating in the 40 days of reflection, watching the video, and
spending an hour in discussion is sure to reinforce the history changing events of Lent and
make this study a meaningful experience for anyone.
Lenten Emphasis starts Sunday night February 21 at 6:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall, along
with finger foods and informal worship.
Suggested donation for study materials: $20.00.
