Chapter 1: Introduction

1.1 Machinery and equipment authority: Introduction


Machinery and equipments authority (M&EA) is an authority which is govern under north
western provincial council. It was started at 1975 as a mechanical services supply unit to the road
development authority. But in 1993 it was separated from the road development authority and
started it as Machinery and equipment authority. It is situated in No.95, South circular road,
Kurunegala .

1.2 Vision of the institute

Be the best service provider for the construction equipments, light vehicle repairing and training of the
skilled labor.

1.3 Mission of the institute


Providing the construction equipments for the infrastructure developments of the North western province
by the North western provincial council, repairing the light vehicles of North western provincial
ministries, departments and institutes and training the operators for construction equipments is the
mission of the Machinery and equipments authority.

1.4 Objectives of the institute


Providing the construction equipments and heavy vehicle services for the infrastructure development
projects which is in or outer the North western province, repairing construction equipments and vehicles
of North western provincial council and guaranteed its durability are the objectives of the Machinery and
equipments authority.

1.5 Control of the institute


Machinery and equipments authority is an institute which is under North western province chief ministry
and it is controlled by 5 member director board which is appointed by the Chief Minister of North western
province.

Machinery and equipments authority was divided into few sections to maximize the outcome and the
performance. Mainly there was 10 sections.
1. Administration and finance section

This section was done all the administrative and finance duties such as valuating the jobs
done in the workshop, purchasing or auctioning vehicles etc. There were 24 employees
worked there.
2. Light vehicle section

All the light vehicle repairing like full engine overhaul, engine head replacing, piston
,piston rings ,engine sleeves replacing, break ,clutch, gear box repairing etc. were done in
the light vehicle section. There were 54 mechanics and 18 trainees were worked there.

3. Heavy vehicle section

Repairing of construction equipments, Repairing and maintaining of heavy machineries


which belongs to Machinery and equipments authority and provincial council were done
in the heavy machinery section. There were 18 mechanics worked there.

4. Machining section

There were lathe machines, drilling machines, shaping machines, engine head phasing
machines in the machining section. This is the only place that had head phasing machine
in the kurunegala area. Machining section undertaken the private head phasing jobs from
outside as well. There were 2 mechanics worked there.
