After reviewing for the Licensure Exam for Teachers and passing it, I decided to

share my ten LET passing tips here on my blog. These tips are essentially helpf
ul if you decide not to enroll in a review center and just review on your own to
get a license for teaching.
# 1 Know your weak and strong subjects/classes.
Allot a few hours each day or each week to review the lessons for classes you di
d well when you were still in college. Enjoy this review time so you can easily
remember what you are re-learning.
Allot more time, however, on classes you were weak in. Well, at least if you are
weak in mathematics for example, make sure you don t miss reviewing the concepts
that will be tested in the General Math part of the licensure exam.
It will be easy to find out your areas of weakness. Check the grades in your tra
nscript or assess yourself which among the classes you took you don t remember muc
h about.
See my pointers to review based on PRC s table of specification (TOS), which was a
vailable for download in first week of June 2011.
Also read the coverage of the exam with schedule.
# 2 Understand the major theories, concepts and techniques in Professional Educa
tion subjects.
Understanding the theories and concepts by heart will allow you to answer questi
ons that are written to confuse you. There are times that you have to choose whi
ch among the situations on the choices will be logical based on theories or conc
epts mentioned or implied in the question.
I didn t have any teaching experience when I took the exam so I really based a lot
of my answers on what I remembered from my college years.
See some pointers for Professional Education subjects.
# 3 Strive hard to improve your analytical skills on answering questions.
After you reviewed the theories and concepts, you should test your understanding
by differentiating and explaining these in your own words. While reviewing, rep
hrase ideas and think of actual applications.
For example, in methods of teaching, allow yourself to compare method 1 with met
hod 2, then ask yourself why method 1 is preferred than the other on certain sit
uations.
Ask yourself questions like:
Why are you doing _________?
Why is it similar to ______________?
What if you will not _________, what will happen?
Why the result is different?
How can I apply this?
Have I experienced this myself?
What other examples can I think of?
In other words, this is about ____________.
Just keep asking yourself regarding whatever you ve just read on your review. Anal
yze and answer in your own words. If there are questions at the end of each chap
ter of your book, answer those questions.
Enjoy this process so you will remember.
#4 Review General Education subjects.
Remember that you have to pass all three sets of tests including General Educati
on (for Secondary Education) and two sets of the tests (for Elementary Education
).
Don t assume that General Education is easy since you took the Gen Ed classes whe
n you were in Elementary or High School. Remember that a lot of years had passed
. So refresh your memory especially on common mathematical equations (e.g. Fract
ions, Volumes, Areas, Percentages, Ages, Distance and Time computations) and maj
or science concepts (e.g. Matter, Gravity, Mass, Energy, Friction). You ll never k
now what will show up in your test.
Solve problems listed on your review materials or old books.
# 5 Prepare everything you need for the exam.
Make sure you have read the test guidelines, which included the things you need
to bring for the exam.

Also check if the calculator you plan to bring for the exam is in PRC s list of al
lowed calculators. If not, buy or borrow a calculator that has a model listed th
ere (I bought mine). If you don t want to buy a new one, make sure you have a nonprogrammable calculator. But don t take my word on this because I wasn t sure if oth
er proctors had allowed calculators not on the list. Although my friend said she
didn t even check the list and just grabbed a basic calculator on the exam day. P
roctors check each calculator before the exam starts.
# 6 Get enough sleep before the exam.
Make sure you don t feel drowsy while taking the exam so you have enough time to a
nswer all the test questions. You don t want to fail because you didn t have enough
sleep the night before.
# 7 Avoid erasures, OR MAKE THE ERASURE CLEAN AT LEAST. And Of Course, Shade it
Properly!
In Centro Escolar University (CEU), where I attended college from 2003 to 2007,
we used Scantron papers for our prelim, mid-term, and final exams. So, I m used to
answering tests by shading boxes.
I knew how erasures could make a bad score. So before you shade it, make sure yo
u are shading the right answer, or at least it is your final answer. If you need
to erase it, make sure it is clean. But I still don t think it is a good idea.
So, before the exam day, try the eraser you plan to bring. On a white paper, or
a semi-cardboard white paper, write something on it with the pencil you plan to
bring and erase this writing with this eraser. If the eraser erases cleanly your
writing, then you are good.
I also make sure when I shade the box of my answer, I don t shade it beyond the bo
x (huwag lumampas ang shading). Don t shade it heavily too (Baka masira mo ung pap
el).
# 8 Skip questions you aren t sure and go back to them later on.
There are some questions that no matter how well you prepared for the exam, you
will have no idea what the answer is or it will take you a lot of time to answer
it. If you come across to questions like these skip them first. Answer questio
ns that you know as much as you can then go back to the questions you skipped.
If you still can t figure out the right answer the second time you look at the ski
pped question, make an educated guess. Eliminate options that are obvious detrac
tors and you will end up with two best possible answers.
Make a very very educated guess at this point when you really can t figure the rig
ht one out. Or follow your instinct (See Tip #10).
# 9 Follow instructions.
Listen to what the proctor is telling you during the exam. If you are confused,
ask the proctor directly not your seatmate.
# 10 Bring with you your Common Sense.
Most of the time, you haven t reviewed whatever appears on the real exam. What wil
l help you answer the exam are your basic understanding of the topics and your a
nalytical skill. Don t overdo it though because you might miss the right answer.
My Story:
I completed 18 credits in Education together with my degree in Mass Communicatio
ns-Journalism. In 2008, a year after I graduated, I took the Licensure Exam for
Teachers or LET held in September.
The challenging exam made me think of enrolling in a review class, but at the en
d, I chose to study on my own. Not an easy choice but I was fortunate to have my
friend enrolled in a review class that I photocopied her reviewers.
I started to self-review though just a month away before the exam, and took it m
ore seriously just two weeks before the exam (define cramming!). If I had a bigg
er goal like to be one of the top 10 examinees, I would had taken the review mor
e seriously and started the review months before or took an earlier initiative t
o enroll in a review center (excuses!). I just wanted to pass the exam and get a
license. I m glad I did, with an overall score between 82-84%.

Helpful Tips on Passing LET ( Licensure Examination for Teachers)
Licensure Examination is not actually a metaphorical cliff of an educato
r's pursuit of the profession, in that, if one fails, his life will be disintegr
ated. In my perception, at first, it is, but I was wrong. I was so engrossed, co
uple of months before the board exam, by the erroneous belief that the result, i
f a disappointment, would cause a lot of psychological and social troubles that
even suicide is a choice; much I think for those who graduated with highest acad
emic distinctions. After passing it, I changed my view.
In most perspectives, passing the board exam is difficult. Of course, o
therwise everyone makes it. As per statistics revealed by the Professional Regul
ation Commission, during my time, of over fifty-thousands examinees for Secondar
y Education, more or less fifty percent passed. In some ways around, as they say
, it's a matter of luck. In my experience, it's not. I think I invested so much
in reading over and over again my LET Review books. Thanks to NCBTS LET Reviewer
.
I encourage examinees not to cheat themselves on the degree of prepared
ness and not just to listen to the voice of confidence. Overconfidence, partly,
results into loss of interest to read more and of concentration to digest more w
hat supposed to be. Sometimes, one must be on the state of hunger to strive hard
er. In our college, one must pass first the pre-board examination before his TOR
(exclusive for LET) will be released. Others (who failed the pre-board), becaus
e of the belief that chances of passing the actual board exam are even more, the
y falsify their TOR's (availing services in Recto) and confidently file for lice
nsure exam. Friends of mine did the thing, but only one passed it. Well, that's
better for her, but how about the others (they just caused a very low performanc
e of the college).
LET items, especially Professional Education part, require depth of under
standing and profound heart on various educational situations and on dealing wit
h professional relationships. They do not actually evaluate your knowledge on di
fferent philosophies ( the -isms ), rather how an educator applies them in given
complicated situations. Most items are given with conspicuous answers (the posi
tive choices), however, others really demand critical and logical reasoning. In
these cases, one must not take so much time thinking, let the instincts decide o
n the choice.
I was already teaching in college when I took the LET. That was Septembe
r 30, 2012, last year. I managed not to attend my Saturday classes so I could ha
ve a school visit at Central Colleges of the Philippines (CCP), the one near SM
Sta. Mesa. It is, certainly advised for examinees to do the same for them not to
waste time looking for the designated room right on the day of the exam (LET is
always scheduled on Sunday).
Well, I don't know if you will believe me, but it's true. We had a dri
nking session (with few bottles of Red Horse beer) the night before the exam, bu
t the intoxication, I don't know, caused me to wake up as early as two o'clock.
I couldn't wait for so long so I took a cab and lo! I was too early (3:30 am). I
s there an exam? Well, definitely. I could not feel in the atmosphere there was,
until few hours. Wow. The bottom line here is BE EARLY. But not so exaggerated
as I did.

The last I think is follow instructions. As might be expected, a mach

ine will check your examination output. Imagine that almost all your answers are
correct, and yet the machine rejects your paper...

The LET is a challenging exam that tests future educators.
The Teacher's Board Exam, more commonly known as the Licensure Exam for Teachers
or LET, is an exam that certifies the taker as licensed to teach. Many students
choose to take the LET soon after graduating with a degree in education, as thi
s ensures that the information for the exam is fresh in their minds.

Enroll in Review Classes
Many students choose to enroll in review classes for the LET, where a trained tu
tor can guide them through the subjects covered on the exam. Although review cla
sses can be costly, if you learn best by listening to an instructor and working
with other students, it can be worth the money. Review classes will provide prac
tice tests and worksheets that simulate the LET and allow you work on problems s
imilar to the ones you will encounter on the test.
Know Your Strengths and Weaknesses
Being aware of your personal strengths and weaknesses regarding the information
on the exam can be hugely helpful in crafting your study plan. Pinpoint your str
engths and the bodies of knowledge you are strongly familiar with in order to av
oid spending excess time reviewing them. Conversely, identify your weaknesses in
order to spend extra time working to master areas where you might struggle on t
he exam. Don't take for granted that you will retain all of the information you
learned during college, and test yourself with practice exams to find where you
stand.

Understand Theoretical and Practical Information
The LET doesn't just test your ability to understand educational theory, it also
tests your ability to practically apply information as you would in a classroom

situation. When studying topics, consider both the theory behind what you're le
arning and also how you would convey this information in the classroom. Being ab
le to strike a balance between the theoretical and practical is an invaluable sk
ill for future teachers, and the LET will test you on both.
Be Prepared on Exam Day
On the day of the exam, it's important that you arrive at the testing center on
time and adequately prepared for the test. Get a good night's sleep and eat a he
althy breakfast, and remember to use the bathroom before starting the test. List
en carefully to the proctor for instructions when it comes time to begin the exa
m and read the directions closely when completing questions to be sure you don't
miss anything important.
