Inside issue 152 ART: Kilmorack Gallerys Spring Exhibition includes

SALLY MATTHEWS sculptures, INGEBJORG SMITHs paintings of birds and
owers and large abstract landscapes from BETH ROBERTSON FIDDES,
among others. Worth nipping in to Eden Court to catch the Images of
Evocative Nature exhibition also. | FILM: Avengers: Age of Ultron
looks like a darker, spikier form of Marvel lm - with all your usual faves;
KEANU REEVES is back in the critics good books with his puppy-avenging
John Wick; whilst one of the UKs nest, TOM HARDY, stars in the tense,
Russian-based Child 44 | KIDS: Britains Got Talent young stars Bars &
Melody hit Ironworks; and dont miss magical show Varmints at Eden
Court | MUSIC: Summer must be coming - the festivals have started!
Brew At The Bog is bigger and better than ever - with a really great line
up including FATHERSON, NEON WALTZ, HECTOR BIZERK and WE WERE
PROMISED JETPACKS; hot props Public Service Broadcasting return
to Ironworks only now with a charty album; other dont missers inc John
Cooper Clarke, Rick Wakeman, Foster & Allen, Diamh; and the
Northern Nashville Country Music Fest returns too | SPECIALS: Really
is special this month, with three strong annual xtures all on: Inverness
Whisky Festival is now called NIP, with more events and a wider remit to
include craft gins and more; Highland Fashion Week hits for the 3rd
time - again bigger and better; and the Crime & Thrillers Weekend
returns to Cromarty with IAN RANKIN, DENISE MINA, CHRISTOPHER
BROOKMYRE and LOUISE WELSH leading the literary charge. | SPORT: To
be honest, all the sport chat round here lately has centred around John
Inverdale (whos a bit of a tint), but we noticed April sees another world
class annual event return - the Etape Loch Ness will have the hills alive
with the sound of bike gears; also Celtic come up to see if they can drop
some points; theres a World Darts Champioship at Ironworks and
the Moray International Bonspiel too | THEATRE: Something a bit
different, Champions Of Magic, bring their trickery (or maybe its actual
magic) to Eden Court, where you can also catch the National Theatre
Connections Festival and an unusual show, Last Dream (On Earth)

Spring Art
Plenty of good art on show this month, with local galleries continuing to demonstrate their
excellence. Over at KILMORACK GALLERY, theyre holding their SPRING EXHIBITION until
02 May including sculpture (some in steel and some made from feathers) by
SALLY MATTHEWS [1].. She lives and works close to Wales and this is
the first time her work has been seen in Scotland. The exhibition
also features ROBERT POWELLs
s work, including all sixteen
1
of his Universal History of Antiquity etchings. In this the
artist looks at the past with his extraordinary vision and
incredible detail. He has also been working on a series
of bird-catcher paintings. KIRSTIE COHEN has been in
her studio all winter creating over ten paintings to be
exhibited in this show. New to Kilmorack Gallery is BETH ROBERTSON
FIDDES,, her work in this exhibition includes her large rich abstract
landscapes of Skye. It is several years since Kilmorack Gallery has
shown new work by CHRISTOPHER WOOD. Several of his large new
canvases are included in this show. Meanwhile INGEBJORG SMITHs
birds and flowers in her naive paintings are radiant with life, full of
rebirth and hope. A fine show all round and well worth getting along to.
At BEAULY GALLERY theyre celebrating their tenth anniversary by launching
their Small Square exhibition which will be showing throughout the year
bringing an eclectic mix of professional and newly emerging artists in a small
square format, themes and media showing real variety. Theyre also showing
a selection of works by JENNY HEPBURN featuring seascape themed originals,
and new work by CHRISTINE OKEEFFE and FIONA MACKENZIE, heavily influenced
by the scenic beauty of the Highlands and the animal life within it.
If youre in EDEN COURT, its always worth checking out the works in their
gallery, this month going under the banner of IMAGES OF EVOCATIVE
NATURE,, by James Gordon. Part of an ongoing celebration of the Scottish
Landscape. The pictures show our beautiful little corner of planet earth,
sometimes shining in the sunlight, sometimes glistening with water on
a stormy day and sometimes frozen in icy silence. All this while
spinning through space at a mere 67,000 MPH
Finally a word for PHOTOFEST 2015 at ABERNETHY KIRK, NETHY
BRIDGE. Its a photographic exhibition/sale. Featuring an eclectic mix of
inspiring images from ten local leading photographers. Plus, secondhand books, tombola/tea/coffee/home-baking.

Take Your Pick

What type of films do you go for? No matter, because theres something for more or less
everyone this month. Couldnt possibly write about them all here - and such are the vagaries
of film distribution that whilst we have a schedule of release dates, thats no guarantee the
films will surface in Inverness. Well do our best to outline the more compelling among those
most likely to appear in cinemas here
First, the (pretty much) dead certs to open at Vue; Marvels latest, the much-anticipated
AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON [1] opens from 24 APR and if the trailers anything to go by
(and theyre not always!), this is a grittier, bleaker movie than the first with the delicious
prospect of a villain of real threat, JAMES SPADERs Ultron. Heres hoping its a corker.
If youre a Fast & fan, look out from 03 APR for FURIOUS 7 (head to P47 to win yself
tickets to a special showing). KEANU REEVES, meanwhile, shrugs of a series of duds to
venture into Neeson ex-hitman territory - and seemingly triumphing - in JOHN WICK [2] (10
APR), aided by good performances from Ian McShane, John Leguizamo and Willem Dafoe
plus some sharp action direction, apparently.
Eden Court as always has an excellent offering and whilst they dont always get films from
month of release, they do from 03 APR in the case of the RUSSELL CROWE directed THE
WATER DIVINER [3] (in which an Australian travels to Turkey after the Battle of Gallipoli
to try and locate his three missing sons), also for Russian child murders thriller, CHILD
44 [4] (from 17 APR), with TOM HARDY, NOOMI RAPACE, GARY OLDMAN, and VINCENT
CASSEL; likewise for COBAIN: MONTAGE OF HECK (from 25 APR), the long-awaited Brett
Morgen documentary. It is produced by Cobains daughter Frances Bean, thus ensuring it
contains footage never seen before. Its received great critical reviews, already being hailed
the definitive Kurt film. The film that stirred so much (hmm) controversy, THE INTERVIEW
(with SETH ROGEN & JAMES FRANCO), gets an outing from 03 APR here, as does smart
time-travel movie PREDESTINATION, with ETHAN HAWKE - better than your usual plot-hole
laden affair. The Richard Curtis penned, UK/Brazilian production, TRASH screens from 10
APR, with ROONEY MARA and MARTIN SHEEN starring. Finally, fans of opera, and indeed
Brecht, will want to head along on 01 APR for a Royal Opera House screening of Brecht &
Weills extraordinary RISE AND FALL OF THE CITY OF MAHAGONNY, a satire about money
and morality thats as relevant today as when first performed in 1930.

10

Other flicks that may surface at Vue this month, or Eden Court next month include WOMAN IN
GOLD with HELEN MIRREN and RYAN REYNOLDS trying to recover some looted war art; THE
GOOD LIE a worthy, if impressive outing for the increasingly influential REESE WITHERSPOON;
WHILE WERE YOUNG the latest Noah Baumbach offering with BEN STILLER, NAOMI WATTS,
ADAM DRIVER and AMANDA SEYFRIED - quirk and soul searching guaranteed; ALTMAN, the
documentary about film maker Robert; A LITTLE CHAOS in which ALAN RICKMAN directs
himself and KATE WINSLET in a Gardens of Versailles themed costume drama; and perhaps
our fave tip, THE DUFF [5] - in the Mean Girls/Easy A ballpark with MAE WHITMAN

Expect plenty of particularly high-pitched screams at IRONWORKS on 05 APR, when BARS &
MELODY [1] take to the stage. The duo of Leondre Devries (13) and Charlie Lenehan (15) found
each other posting music covers on F***book and decided to join forces and enter TV show
Britains Got Talent, where their version of Faith Evans Hope incorporated a touching antibullying message from Leondre whod been a victim of it himself. Their appearance led to them
being flown out by new fan Ellen Degeneres to appear on her US show. And from there theyve
unsurprisingly found themselves on the verge of going stratospheric. Catch them now while they
can still thrill and before the Bieberesque barminess kicks in.
Something a little more timeless and just as much fun (unless mime rubs you up the wrong
way) comes from JULIEN COTTEREAU, whos apparently a mix of Buster Keaton, Pierrot and
Pinocchio all grown up and bringing his IMAGINE TOI [2] to EDEN COURT on 26 APR. Gentle
and nave, with his too-short trousers and his funny hat, with no set and no props, Julien creates
entire worlds of monsters and princesses using only his own sound effects and mime talents.
Even more impressive might be VARMINTS [3] at EDEN COURT on 29 APR. This exhilarating dancetheatre show (choreographed by B-boy and Sadlers Wells Wilkie Branson and directed by kids theatre
specialist Sally Cookson) tells the poignant tale of one small creatures struggle to preserve a world
in danger of being lost forever. There was once only the sound of bees and the wind in the wiry grass,
the low murmuring of moles in the cool dark earth, and the song of birds in the high blue sky. Every
day the city grows larger and the noise grows louder, until there is so much noise that no-one can
hear themselves think. An intriguing starting point for a show with some important points to make..

Festival Season Starts Here

You know the long, hard winter is finally over and summers on its way when the
festival season begins again. And, more specifically, when BREW AT THE BOG
sets the benchmark for everything that is to follow in the year ahead. Now a firmly
established part of the musical calendar, its taking place over two days at Bogbain
Farm this year, on 02 & 03 MAY, with new and roots music as well as five distinct bars.
So as well as the usual excellent beers from Brewdog, you can also find dedicated
bars selling prosecco, cider and even gin. There are more acts appearing than you can
shake a stick at, but highlights include ICA favourites FATHERSON [1], NEON WALTZ
[2], HONEYBLOOD [3], WE WERE PROMISED JETPACKS [4], HECTOR BIZERK [5],
OUR FUTURE GLORY [6], FAT GOTH, GARDEN OF ELKS, LIONEL, POOR THINGS,
SCHNARFF SCHNARFF and many, many more. Most importantly, its got a friendly
vibe that few other get-togethers can match. Full details at brewatthebog.com

If youd prefer to watch your music indoors for a few more weeks yet, youre still well
catered for with a plethora of fine shows coming up. Like the always welcome return
of PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTING [7] (IRONWORKS, 01 MAY), whose new album,
The Race For Space, is riding high in the charts, the band themselves midway through
a touring schedule that has them circling the globe more often than their beloved
spacemen and women. Expect a captivating show, both sonically and visually. And
have a gander at their What Weve Been Listening To on P18 >>>
A visit from a living legend comes in the shape of JOHN COOPER CLARKE [8] at
IRONWORKS on 17 APR. He may have been doing his thing since the seventies, but
hes as vital as ever and continues to be an inspiration to young lyricists like Plan B
and Alex Turner. Plus, hes one heck of a raconteur.
RICK WAKEMANs raconteurship seems to largely consist of being grumpy these
days, but hell also share some musical memories (as well as a bit of virtuoso piano)
when he appears at EDEN COURT on 12 APR. His prog past may be alarming, but hes
collaborated with the likes of Elton John and David Bowie, so there are tales to tell.
If you prefer something a little folkier or more traditional, EDEN COURT should be your
destination of choice. For DOMINIC KIRWAN & MARY DUFF on 09 APR, FOSTER &
ALLEN on 19 APR, DAIMH on the same day and five-piece indie folksters BLUEFLINT
on 25 APR. Lovers of rootin, tootin C&W will, of course be heading to the NORTHERN
NASHVILLE COUNTRY MUSIC FEST from 03-05 APR.
Classical fans are equally well served with THE BUSCH ENSEMBLE at INVERNESS
TOWN HOUSE on 15 APR, SCOTTISH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA at EDEN COURT on 02
MAY and, at the same venue on 03 MAY, a performance of HANDELS MESSIAH by
INVERNESS CHORAL SOCIETY.

PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTING: J Willgoose Esq - What Ive Been Listening To

Ironworks, Inverness, Fri 01 May

These are heady times for PUBLIC SERVICE

BROADCASTING. When they first came up here a
couple of years back their inventive soundtracking
of public information films with a shimmering mix
of rock riffs and hazy beats seemed an engaging
novelty that, while deserving of a wider audience,
seemed destined to remain a niche pleasure. With
the release of their second album, The Race For
Space, inspired by the battle between USA and
USSR to get someone to the stratosphere and
beyond, theyve not only tapped into a zeitgeisty
enthusiasm for all things astronautical, but also
honed their creations into things of genuine
force. And theyve played shows everywhere from
the UK Space Centre to Eastern Europe and even
Australia. When the duo of WRIGGLESWORTH
and J WILLGOOSE ESQ come to IRONWORKS on
01 MAY, it could be one of the gigs of the year, so,
to get you in the mood, here is the music thats
currently inspiring JW:
#1 FATHER JOHN MISTY - I Love You, Honeybear
I was a massive fan of Fleet Foxes so very
pleasantly surprised to discover that their exdrummer had released a new album. This is a
beautiful song with incredible lyrics, and a great
voice.

18

#2 TORTOISE - Everglade
Tortoises TNT was a big influence on our new
album and this is the final track from it. It
absolutely oozes class - a great riff and when the
drums kick in properly its a thing of understated
beauty.
#3 DUTCH UNCLES - Decided Knowledge
Dutch Uncles keep getting better and better and
this reminds me of dEUS The Architect, as
well as a bunch of great 80s songs. It sounds
fantastic.
#4 MANIC STREET PREACHERS - The Next Jet
To Leave Moscow
We were lucky enough to tour with the Manics
on a few dates in Europe last year - theyve
always been one of my favourite bands so it was
a real privilege. Their newest album (Futurology)
was absolutely fantastic and this is one of my
favourite songs from it.
#5 METRONOMY - The Look
Simply one of my favourite songs of the last 5
years or so. It just captures something indefinable
- it has a sound and a feel that mark it out as
really special. One for the ages.

Will You Take A Dram?

In the last couple of years, the Inverness Whisky Festival has become something of
a highlight for fans of the countrys finest drink, only this time round its expanded
into a dedicated boutique drinks shindig including not only whisky, but also the
increasingly popular appeal of gin. Local distillery Tomatin has entered into a twoyear partnership with the festival, now rechristened NIP [1] taking place across
the city from 0711 APR. The festival has already attracted major brands, such as
Glenmorangie, Benromach, Balblair, and Edinburgh Gin. Legendary whisky expert
CHARLES MACLEAN and author and academic Dr BROOKE MAGNANTI (aka Belle
de Jour) are among the big names leading a series of intimate masterclasses and
tastings, culminating in a day-long exhibition of distilleries at Bogbain Farm. And
you wont want to miss the Prohibition-themed Whisky and Gin Tours (FRI 10) in the
city centre, or the NIP Exhibition in a marquee at Bogbain (SAT 11) with live music,
food, masterclasses, an auction and more Full details at thenip.scot
Another immediate success has come in the form of HIGHLAND FASHION WEEK [2],
which returns for its third outing from 2228 APR. Originally launched in June 2014,
comprising a week of workshops open to the public concluded by a full fashion show
finale and this time round the organisers want to focus even more on the many
designers in the Highlands, and show just how much talent there is up here. There
are also more special evening events this time, including:
WED 22 APR - ROUGE BOUTIQUE STYLING CHAMBER Glenmoriston Hotel 7.30pm
Informal relaxed styling session everyone attending will also get a mini personal training session with Highland
Fashion Week PT Jason Hastings, and Rouge Boutique will talk through some styling tips and techniques.
THU 23 APR - ZAZA AND CRUZ PRODUCT LAUNCH Glenmoriston Hotel 7pm
Local firm Zaza & Cruz launch their new male skincare products. Invite only.
FRI 24 APR - LINGERIE MOVIE ICONS Newton Hotel, Nairn 7.30pm
A movie themed lingerie fashion show from Grace Lily Lingerie with local models and top designers on
show. VIP tickets available with bubbly. One to dress up for.
SAT 25 APR - THE BIG EVENT Glenmoriston Hotel Doors 7.30pm, show starts at 8pm The showstopper
- best of local and national designers and a host of local models whove been put through their paces by
HFW. With exclusive goody bags, candy buffet and more - tickets will be snapped up.

If your passions run more to curling up with a good book, youll want to head along
3 from 2426 APR for the4CRIME AND THRILLERS
to2THE STABLES in CROMARTY
WEEKEND [3]. Star attraction is sometime Cromarty resident IAN RANKIN who
might even be persuaded to spill the beans on rumours that hes resurrecting
Rebus, especially since hes giving a talk called Rebus Stopped At Rosemarkie:
The Pitfalls of Using the Real World in Fiction. Also in attendance are the excellent
DENISE MINA, CHRISTOPHER BROOKMYRE and LOUISE WELSH. The weekend
begins with a Murder Mystery Dinner on Friday night with workshops and talks all
day Saturday and Sunday plus a big music and delicious curry supper event on
Saturday night at the Victoria Hall, Cromarty. cromartyartstrust.org.uk for more.

Following the death of his wife, an Australian farmer leaves his country to search for his three missing

great disasters of WW1. Battling against government bureaucracy, foreign traditions and armed forces in
war-torn Turkey, the search of the heart-broken father, clinging onto hope against all reason and odds, is
an epic manifestation of a fathers innate bond and boundless love for his children. A bold directorial debut

Murder is strictly a capitalist disease. In Soviet Russia there is no murder. At least, that is what everyone
is told. When secret police agent Leo Demidov uncovers a series of child murders he suffers a crisis of

On Your Bike
The Tour De France may still be a few months away, but for cycling afficionados April sees
the real start of the season and brings a host of exciting one-day classics like the Tour of
Flanders and the bone-shuddering Hell of the North that is Paris-Roubaix. And, rather
closer to home, an event thats quickly established itself as an essential date on the
cycling calendar up here, ETAPE LOCH NESS [1] on 26 APR.
The inaugural cycle last year demonstrated just why its perfect for up here, the 66 mile
closed-road route around the iconic loch, starting and finishing in Inverness, offering a
fantastic challenge with unrivalled scenery. Places went within minutes, both last year
and this time round, but its worth heading along to cheer on the cyclists. More details at
etapelochness.com
Its a busy weekend for outdoor exertions, with 25 APR seeing both the GLEN AFFRIC
DUATHLON and the HIGHLANDER MOUNTAIN MARATHON. The former, returning after
a break of six years is a run/bike/run event that is suitable for everyone. Not only will
the experienced, even elite athlete find it challenging, but the environment also makes
it a very rewarding experience for novices. All levels are encouraged to enter. See glenaffric-duathlon.co.uk for full details. Theres no location disclosed yet for the Highlander,
but were assured its within an hour and a half of Inverness. And will involve running up
mountains.
One of the great outdoor events up here used to be the Bonspiel, with curling held on frozen
rivers and the like. Its moving indoors this year, the MORAY INTERNATIONAL BONSPIEL
taking place at MORAY LEISURE CENTRE from 1012 APR. Then there are more target
skills on show at the latest round of the WORLD DARTS CHAMPIONSHIP at IRONWORKS
on 10 APR featuring three of the very greatest fellows ever to have hurled the tungsten in
PHIL TAYLOR, BOBBY GEORGE and KEITH DELLAR, the latter the real-life inspiration for the
Keith Talent character in Martin Amis London Fields.
Footywise its time to go
through all that unneccesarty
rigmarole of The Split, with
Ross County trying to avoid
relegation and ICT tilting at
Europe. CELTIC come to town
to play Caley on 11 APR, no
doubt pleased to be playing
someone other than Dundee
United, whove been the
Bhoys opponents in every
match in March, spanning
three different competitions.

Creative Magic
One element of theatricality thats more popular than ever is magic. And thanks to the
likes of Dynamo, Troy and their ilk, its young people who are driving the renaissance.
No surprise then to find that the stars of the CHAMPIONS OF MAGIC [1] show at
EDEN COURT on 04 APR are almost all fresh faced youths. They include EDWARD
HILSUM, International Stage Magician Of The Year, who looks like he might be in One
Direction and yet still demonstrates extraordinary skills, along with the duo of YOUNG
and STRANGE, who you may have seen on Penn and Tellers Fool Us show and mind
reader ALEX MCALEER who appears to have stepped straight out of a Shoreditch
hipster bar. Showing the youngsters a thing or two is FAY PRESTO, the countrys finest
female magician, the whole show promising some spectacular illusions including a rather
alarming sounding finale when one performer will walk through the spinning steel blades
of a giant industrial fan. Ooof!
Its hard to know whether these are good or bad times for drama in Britain. Certainly,
theatres and companies have found themselves hit hard by the governments austerity
policies and its attendant fallout regarding paying punters, but again, theres also
a feeling that fresh talent is coming along with more verve than has been seen for
decades. A case in point is the NATIONAL THEATRE CONNECTIONS FESTIVAL coming to
EDEN COURT from 13-16 APR. Each year the National Theatre asks ten writers to create
new plays for performance by young theatre companies all over the country and for the
EC staging that means not only the venues own company but also a dozen more from
as far afield as Shetland, Skye and Thurso. Over the course of four days they will attend
workshops and deliver their public performance of their chosen script, showing that even
in the face of governmental disdain, theatre continues to enchant and inspire a whole
new generation.
From magic down here to the magic of space and LAST DREAM (ON EARTH) at EDEN
COURT on 18 APR. This world premiere is created and directed by Kai Fischer, in
association with National Theatre of Scotland and Tron Theatre Glasgow. A traveller
stands on a beach in North Africa, with a small group of friends. Tonight, they are going
to try it. Tonight, they are getting ready for a journey that might change their lives.
Decades earlier, a young man is getting strapped into a tiny sphere, on top of a powerful
rocket. He is ready for his mission, trying to become the first Human Being in Outer
Space. His name will soon be known all over the world: his name is Yuri Gagarin. Last
Dream (On Earth) interweaves a driving music score, with accounts of those who risk
their lives for a distant dream. Audiences will experience the immersive sound world on
headphones as it is created and performed on stage in front of them.

Trendy Training

What is so hot right now for 2015?

If the last year or so has been all about High Intensity Training (you know, go hell for
leather for a minute, then sit back and have a doughnut), there s more recently been a
change in the wind on the high seas of tness.
It seems everyone is talking Bodyweight Training for 2015. Basically using your own
mass for resistance instead of weights or machines in the gym, bodyweight training is
great because it s an anytime, anyplace training. Whilst there are disadvantages (eg:
dicult to achieve the same level of intensity as using higher weights), they are few for
all but the most dedicated body & strength builders.
The most popular forms of Bodyweight Exercise include: Push Ups (plus more intense/
targetted versions such as Close Grip Push Ups, Suspended Push Ups or Pike Push Ups);
Burpees (the most complete non-prop exercise available?); Pull Ups (and a laid back
version, the Inverted Row); Planks (and the tougher Star Planks); Abs Rollouts (with aids
like an Ab Wheel or Swiss Ball); Sit Ups (and crunches); Squats (plus Jump Squats and Pistol
Squats); and Back Strengtheners like the Glute Bridge and/or Prone Back Extension.
Go for high numbers of repetitions for more endurance development, or increase
the intensity and decrease the reps for more strength improvement. You ll nd you
need more balance and exibility to do many of these exercises compared to on gym
equipment which promotes even muscle development so is worth persevering with.
Among the other most popular current exercise options are Treadmill Classes (hitting
the UK hard from the US); Personalised Online Training (there are many many services
available at diering cost) and of course the free non-specic vlogs version extensively
available on Youtube; Self Limiting Movement - which concentrates on correct
movement rather than high weights; Restorative Yoga (and self myofascial relief )
- basically stretching; plus slightly weirder sounding options Hot Barre (literally ballet
exercises in heat) and Aerial Yoga (suspended on a silk cloth or yoga swing)!
Whatever you do, the general rules are:
Doing something is better than doing nothing
Don t do so much today you won t come back for more tomorrow
Try to achieve small improvements day by day, don t rush to nd your peak then stop
Rest and Recovery are an important part of any exercise regime
Exercise is as good for your mind as it is for your body

EATING OUT

The Birch Tree

Delny, Invergordon

01349 853 549

If Father Teds Father Fitzgeralds

voice was a road, it might just
be the A9. It is an awful dreary,
monotonous road, eh? Well, there
are some good bits, but by and large,
from Aviemore or so up to, oh, I dont
know Tain it is not a thrill. Not
helped by a dull March cloudfest and
all that awful single-carriage tarmac
slowing proceedings.
On a good day we might hit our
destination in twenty or so of
Gods finest minutes from leaving
Inverness but the good days are
fewer than they might be, on our
national scandal of a too-thin road.
The spine of Scotland is in need
of a chiropractor it should have
been built dual carriageway way back
when. Imagine how that would help
the Highlands flourish. National and
local government pretend that its ok
to take 20 years (or whatever) over
widening parts of it, but it plainly
isnt. Two lanes minimum from Perth
all the way to Scrabster Harbour
whats not to like? Gius it now.
So we find ourselves trundling along
up towards our destination on a

day of no great volume of traffic at

a mere 40mph. Because, it turns
out, some (insert word questioning
sanity) driving instructor decided that
the A9 was a great place for their
student to learn to drive.
Now, dont write in (sheesh, already!)
Im all for learning to drive and would in
fact advocate special training in main
road, dual carriageway and motorway
driving (plus driving in the dark) as
mandatory but I dont think it is
fair on either student or the general
population to take a learner driver on
the road if theyre not yet ready to drive
to the speed limits. Considering that
it is the overtaking that causes most
of the accidents, it seems like a nobrainer from the well-sighted vantage
point of my high horse.
And theres two serious points here,
because not only might the lack of
two carriageways or the continued
presence of learner drivers slowing
the traffic flow on such a key route
result in death or injury, but I am less
incentivised to leave the confines of
Inverness and take a lunchy jaunt
up said highway to sample a pick of

lunch at the excellent The Birch Tree.

Always best to start with a rant, eh?
Anyway, you know me another day,
another dance partner and today
is no exception. When you have a
road trip to factor in to your review,
youd better choose wisely, and I do.
My co-pilot is easily up to the task
total conversance with the latest sat

some alacrity and order. Soup and
pat - that ok? Well, it was Leek and
Potato Soup with Truffle Oil and
Home Made Bread and Chicken
Liver Parfait, Armagnac Prunes and
Oatcakes to be more precise.
Now those prunes would doubtless
provide the tart-fruit-alco-sweet
cadenza to counterpoint the
earthy sins of the sturdy spread

To be blunt, whilst I like a soup, not many

of them over the years have troubled
my memory for much longer than they
were in the bowl. A few notably bad
ones, only one or two really good. By
which I mean considerably better than
a Heinz Cream of Tomato. Pleasingly, I
get to add to that total, courtesy of a
cracking vessel of virtue here at the
Birch Tree. Of all the soups, potato and
leek is the most hazardous - so often
clagged by a dominance of spud starch
or a watery, bite-less let down. Not
this one. Note the adjectives: creamy,
smooth, aromatic, balanced, fragrant,
substantial, soothing. The A9 forgotten,
my oesophageal tract massaged to a
blissful trance. A triumph as far as any
soup with potato goes.

Looking up inspiration

why not consider a Stretch Ceiling?

When you feel you ve transformed everything you can think of about your favourite
room - walls, oors, windows, furniture, doors look up and think again. What about
that old common-or-garden ceiling you ve got up there? Resolutely matt white and
square? Well - how about a Stretch Ceiling?...
A Stretch Ceiling is a suspended system consisting of a frame - or perimeter track
- and a lightweight fabric membrane that stretches and clips over the track. This
allows the incorporation of all types of interesting lighting options, plus diusers,
grilles, oating panels and creative shapes.
Typically fabric used is a thin (0.2mm) PVC based membrane coming in a vast variety
of colours and nishes - including mirror like, metallic, perforated and translucent for
diusing light, backlighting or projection.
Stretch Ceiling Company have been in this game for 26 years using a UK manufactured
track system - in either aluminium ar PVC - which enables designers to incorporate
curves, domes and loads of funky shapes. Their experienced, dedicated installation
sta have created some high-prole ceilings including for Edinburgh Uni, Royal Bank
of Scotland, Ferrari, the Saatchi Gallery and the very eyecatching one at Chelsea s
Snog Store (pictured, below left).
