The Singapore Tyler Print Institute (STPI)

devotes itself to exploring contemporary art
practices in print and paper. Known for its
residency programme, where artists across all
disciplines and nationalities are invited to work
with STPI to push the boundaries of traditional
printmaking, the institution often produces art
that deviates from conventional 2-D prints.
Take, for example, Eko Nugrohos paper
cast sculptures, and Rirkrit Tiravanijas works
using thermochromatic ink, which visitors are
encouraged to touch to see its reaction to heat.
Were always finding new ways to work
with printmaking, elaborates Nor Jumaiyah,
head of communications and projects for STPI.
Its how we keep traditional mediums alive.
Each year, it holds a summer show that
sees world-class art works displayed in its
gallery. Rare lithographs and linocuts by Pablo
Picasso, as well as prints by British artist David
Hockney, were shown in previous instalments.

This year, STPI presents Edo Pop: The Graphic

Impact Of Japanese Prints, which features
more than 60 notable ukiyo-e prints (woodblock
prints) that originated from Japans Edo period
from 1603 to 1868.
Its been curated to show both iconic
pieces and contemporary works that reveal how

ukiyo-e prints are still influencing art today,

says Nor. Contemporary pieces include those
by Hong Kong artist Wilson Shieh.
