1. FILL-IN: Use the word or phrase that BEST answers the question or statement.
a. In the reaction Cu (s) + S (s) CuS (s), what is reduced?
b.__________________When performing flame tests, this is the part of the salt that causes the color.
c.___________________In addition to avoiding spills, recapping chemical bottles and jars also prevents this.
d.__________________The type of footwear that you are required to wear in lab.
e.___________________The TD written on a volumetric pipet stands for this.
f.___________________The repeating part or sub-unit of a polymer.
g.__________________An example of a strong acid.
h. The glassware that would be the best choice to make a 250.0 mL solution.
i. The section of your report in which you would compare your value to a known value.
j. The term represented by the slope of the graph you made for the spectroscopy lab.
k. The value you would record when using a graduated pipet to measure 8 mL.
2. We have discussed macroscopic and microscopic properties throughout the semester.
a. There is a pile of Mg ribbon on the bench, list two microscopic and two macroscopic properties of it.
b. Draw a picture of each.
3. You are conducting an experiment where you have copper (II) sulfate and excess sulfuric acid (H2SO4)
dissolved in water in a beaker and you add zinc to the solution (similar to the last step of the copper cycle).
a. There are two reactions that occur simultaneously when the Zn reacts with each reactant separately.
Write the molecular equations for both, being sure to indicate phases, etc.
b. What is the difference between a molecular equation and an ionic equation?
c. What are the qualitative observations you would record for these reactions? Be as specific as possible.
d. How could you use emission spectroscopy to help confirm the identity of the product(s) formed?
e. If you wanted to investigate these reactions further, what types of things could you measure? What are
some quantitative observations you could make?
4. We know that there are certain conditions under which gases behave ideally or similarly. In lecture, we
discussed three main assumptions we make about ideal gases. List and discuss two of them.

5. You decide to use absorption spectroscopy and TLC to analyze the components of spinach. You measure the
absorption spectra of your sample and obtain the spectrum below on the left. You suspect that there are
chlorophyll a and b as well as B-carotene and xanthophyll in spinach. Answer the following questions:
Solvent front
-carotene

chlorophyll a
chlorophyll b
xanthophyll

a. The absorbance of a 8.75 x 10-6 M solution is 0.922 at a wavelength of 663 nm with a 1.00 cm
pathlength. Calculate the molar absorptivity (show all work).
b. Why does a leaf appear green (specifically reference the graph above)?
c. The TLC plate you measure is shown above. List the components in order from most polar to least polar.
6. Red 1 is a dye first synthesized in 1880, the same year
aspirin was first synthesized. The last step in the multi-step
synthesis of this dye is shown here:
a. If 3.00 g of the precursor are mixed with 3.50 g of the naphthol what will be the limiting reagent? (You must
show work to get credit).

150 g/mol

144 g/mol

b. If the reaction produces 5.50 g of Red 1 dye, what is the percent yield?

293 g/mol
