Apotexowns61%ofCangeneCorp.,aWinnipegbasedbiopharmaceuticalcompany,accordingto
Cangene's2007annualreport.Cangene'sbusinessfocusesarehyperimmunes,contractmanufacturing,
biopharmaceuticalsandbiodefenseagainstinfectiousdiseasessuchassmallpox,hepatitisBandanthrax.Its
productsincludeWinRhoSDF.InFebruary2014,EmergentBioSolutions,anAmericancompanybasedin

ApotexhasworkedinconjunctionwithTheTeasdaleCortiFoundationtoprovidemedicineforSt.Mary's
HospitalLacor(alsoknownasLacorHospital)inUganda.Apotexcontinuedtoprovidemedicinesfor
LacorHospitalin2013,andintotal,hasdonatedapproximately$1.2millioninmedicinestoLacor
Hospital.
InSeptember2014,inresponsetothespreadofthechikungunyavirusinHaiti,Apotexworkedwiththe
humanitarianorganizationDirectRelieftodonatemorethan$2.2millioninmedicalaidtothecountry.[6]
In2009,ApotexbeganprovidingmedicinestotheMullyChildrensFamilyFoundation,anorganization
locatedoutsideofNairobi,Kenyathatisdedicatedtorescuingandsupportingorphanedandhomeless

largestdonationgiventotheCollegeofPharmacy.[8]
OnAugust22,2013,Apotexannouncedthatitwoulddonate$10milliontowardtheconstructionofthe
newHumberRiverHospital(HRH)inToronto,Canada.Apotex'sdonationwouldgotowardsthebuilding
ofHumberRiverHospital'sEmergencyDepartment.[9]

CreationoftheApotexFoundation
ApotexfoundedtheApotexFoundation,aprivatelyheldcharitableorganization,whichhasdonatedover
$17millioninmedicinesoverthelast10years.Criticalmedicineshavebeenshippedtoeverydisasterzone
aroundtheglobetoprovideassistancetohumansinneed.ApotexwasalsotheonlyCanadiancompanyto
developandmanufactureacombinationdrugforAIDSpatientsinRwanda.

Problemswithregulator
ApotexreceivedawarningletterfromtheU.S.FoodandDrugAdministration(FDA)regardingthe
EtobicokeplantonJune25,2009forgoodmanufacturingpractice(GMP)violations.[10]Italsoreceiveda
warninglettercitingsimilarGMPviolationsintheSignetplantonMarch29,2010.[11]FDAissuedan
importbanonalldrugsmanufacturedatthesetwoplantsandpreventedthecompanyfromseekingnew

InvestmentDisputesseekingarbitrationwiththeU.S.A.Inthefiling,ApotexcitedunfairtreatmentbyFDA
whichconstitutedaviolationoftheNorthAmericanFreeTradeAgreement(NAFTA).Apotexfurther
claimedthattheactionofFDAdecimateditsbusiness.[13]OnAugust26,2014,NAFTAtribunalrejected

FDAinspectedthesameplantsagainin2013andissuedwarninglettersformoreproblems.[15]InApril
2014,FDAbannedamanufacturingplantownedbyApotexinBangalore,India.Inthewarningletter,FDA
indicatedthattheplantroutinelydeletedfailedtestresultsandreplacedwithretestresultsthatpassed.FDA
foundthattheviolationsaresystemicandweredatedbackformanyyears,havingthesameissuesnotedin
pastinspectionssince2006.[15]

Lawsuits
On17May2013,agroupofpregnantCanadianwomenfiledaclassactionlawsuitagainstApotex,afterit
wasdiscoveredthatthecompany'srecalledbirthcontrolpillpackagescontainedmoreplacebosthan
