ABOUT THE PERFORMERS

Founded in 2014, THE WILLOW CONSORT is an exciting new chamber choir

based at The University of York directed by Danny Purtell. We perform a
wide range of repertoire, from Renaissance to contemporary works.

All of our singers have been hand-picked and sing with some of the top
amateur and professional choirs in the country, including: I Fagiolini, Genesis
Sixteen, The Carice Singers, Renaissance, The National Youth Choir of Great
Britain and many more.

We are looking forward to bringing many exciting programmes of choral
music to audiences in York, the rest of the United Kingdom and further afield.

DANNY PURTELL is currently in his second year studying Music at the
University of York. He started his musical education at The John Fisher
School, where he was made head chorister of the school's chapel choir.

Danny spent his Gap Year as Bass Choral Scholar at Portsmouth Cathedral
where his solo work included a live broadcast of Choral Evensong on BBC
Radio 3 and the baritone solos in Faure's Requiem with the City of London
Sinfonia conducted by Stephen Layton.

Since starting his undergraduate, Danny has sung in numerous University
and student-run ensembles, including The 24, Albarosa and the University
Chamber Choir. Danny also conducts the University of York Concert
Orchestra and the University Opera Society's summer production of The
Magic Flute.

WEEP, O MINE EYES

John Bennett, arr. Danny Purtell

Weep, O mine eyes, and cease not,
alas these your spring tides methinks increase not.
when begin you
to swell so high that I may drown me in you?

TAKE HIM, EARTH, FOR CHERISHING
Herbert Howells (1892-1983)

Take him, earth, for cherishing; to thy tender breast receive him. Body of a
man I bring thee, Noble even in its ruin.
Once was this a spirits dwelling by the breath of God created.
High the heart that here was beating. Christ the prince of all its living.
Guard him well, the dead I give thee, not unmindful of his creature Shall he
ask it: he who made it Symbol of his mystery.
Comes the hour God hath appointed to fulfill the hope of men.
Then must thou, in very fashion, what I give, return again.
Not though ancient time decaying wear away these bones to sand, Ashes that
a man might measure in the hollow of his hand:
Not though wandering winds and idle, drifting through the empty sky,
Scatter dust was nerve and sinew, is it given to man to die.
Once again the shining road Leads to ample Paradise;
Open are the woods again that the serpent lost for men.
Take, O take him, mighty leader take again thy servants soul,
Grave his name, and pour the fragrant Balm upon the icy stone.

THE BURIAL SERVICE

Thomas Morley

I am the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord: he that believeth in me, yea,
though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in
me shall never die.

I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon
the earth. And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh
shall I see God: whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and
not another.

We brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing
out. The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away: blessed be the name of the
Lord.

Man that is born of a woman hath but a short time to live, and is full of
misery. He cometh up, and is cut down, like a flower: he fleeth as it were a
shadow, and never continueth in one stay.

In the midst of life we are in death: of whom may we seek for succour, but of
thee, O Lord, who for our sins art justly displeased? Yet, O Lord God most
holy, O Lord most mighty, O holy and most merciful Saviour, deliver us not
into the bitter pains of eternal death.

Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts: Shut not thy merciful ears unto
our prayrs, but spare us, Lord most holy. O God most mighty, O holy and
merciful Saviour, thou most worthy judge eternal, suffer us not, at our last
hour, for any pains of death, to fall from thee.

I heard a voice from heavn saying unto me: Write, from henceforth blessed
are the dead, which die in the Lord: even so saith the Spirit; for they rest from
their labours.

Amen.
From the Order of the Burial of the Dead
Book of Common Prayer, 1559

SONG FOR ATHENE

John Tavener

Alleluia. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.
Alleluia. Remember me, O Lord, when you come into your kingdom.
Alleluia. Give rest, O Lord, to your handmaid who has fallen asleep.
Alleluia. The Choir of Saints have found the well-spring of life and door of paradise.
Alleluia. Life: a shadow and a dream.
Alleluia. Weeping at the grave creates the song: Alleluia.
Alleluia. Come; enjoy rewards and crowns I have prepared for you.

TENEBRAE RESPONSORIES
James MacMillan

I
TENEBRAE FACTAE SUNT
Tenebrae factae sunt dum crucifixissent
The day grew dark as the Jews nailed
Jesum Judaei,et circa horam nonam
Jesus to the cross, and at about the ninth
exclamavit Jesus voce magna:
hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice:
Deus meus, Deus meus, ut quid me
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
dereliquisti?Et inclinato capite, emisit spiritum. And with his head bowed, he gave up his spirit.

Exclamans Jesus voce magna ait:
Jesus said in a loud voice:
Pater, in manus tuas commendo
Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.
