In June 2009 amendments to
SOLAS regulation V/19 to
mandate the carriage of
Electronic Chart Display and
Information Systems (ECDIS)
were adopted
The rolling timeframe of ECDIS
mandation has already started
with HSCs
1st of January 2012 new
passanger vessel >500 gt and
new tanker >1.000gt

Definition of ECDIS
This is an ECDIS
Type-approved hardware
Type-approved software
At least minimum sensors connected (GPS,
Gyro and Log)
Adequate back-up arrangement
Official and updated ENC / SENC charts
A trained crew (generic and type-specific)
ECDIS has to be included in the Ships
Safety and Equipment Certificate
(attached in the RoE)
Transition plan including
Gap analysis
Risk analysis
Procedure updates

ECDIS Definition
Stand-alone
ECDIS in stand-alone configuration complies with ECDIS Carriage
Requirements and requires paper charts back-up.
Mandatory sensors to be connected to NMEA ports:
Position sensor , (D)GPS
Heading Sensor, Gyro
Speed sensor, LOG
Additional information and sensors/systems :
AIS
2x ARPA Target data A/B
NAVTEX (NMEA or ASCII format)
Echo Sounder
Wind Sensor
Water Temperature
Ships movement/Docking/Rotation
Set/Drift

ECDIS Definition
Dual ECDIS
Dual ECDIS complies with the Backup Requirements for
ECDIS and meets the chart carriage requirement. The
system is supplied in Master + Backup configuration. In
case of Master Station failure, Backup station replaces it
in accordance with the ECDIS backup arrangement
requirements.
Mandatory sensors must be connected to the
NMEA ports on both Master and Back-up WS
processor units
Other sensors to be connected via Data Collector
Unit (DCU) serial ports
Network Ethernet switch is required to establish
the network for mentioned above devices

01.01.2012 the new STCW code is effective
If the ECDIS is primary means of navigation your crew needs:
Generic ECDIS training
Type specific training (TST)
Three kinds of providing TST are possible:
1. TST by an ECDIS maker/approved partner (BM, DE, IE, PA, SG, UK)
2. TST with help of CBT solution (BS, AG)
3. The shipping companies have to do some kind of familiarization (CY,
AU, GI, NL, MH)
