Weinland Park Community Civic Association

Communications Committee
Notes from Meeting of March 11, 2013
Jennifer Mankin, chair of the committee, called the meeting to order shortly after 6:30 p.m. at
Godman Guild Association. Present were Matt Adair, R. Anthonio Barno, Laura Bidwa, Steve
Sterrett, and Anna Soter.
Logo. Committee members discussed the need for a logo for the civic association, the possible
cost for professional design of such a logo, and who might do the design. After discussion, the
committee members agreed that there wasnt a need for a professionally designed logo at this
time. Mr. Adair agreed to design a standard letterhead for the civic association using a typeface,
rather than design.
Newsletter. The committee discussed a number of matters related to the newsletter:

Mr. Adair discussed the use of Mail Chimp as a free service to distribute the civic
associations newsletter via the Internet. After discussion, the committee agreed to continue
distributing the newsletter over the Internet in a pdf format for the time being.
Ms. Mankin suggested that the monthly newsletter be printed on 11x17 paper and folded in
half to create four pages to permit more photographs and better design. She will talk with
Michael Wilkos about The Columbus Foundation printing the newsletter in that format.
Ms. Mankin also said she hopes to recruit one or more residents who will take photographs
for the newsletter on a regular basis. Photographs not used in the newsletter could be placed
on the civic associations website or Facebook page. Residents also will be asked to submit
photographs of neighborhood events.
The committee agreed to expand the calendar to a full page.

E-mail account. Ms. Mankin announced that communications@weinlandparkcivic.org is a live

e-mail account. She asked that articles and story ideas for the newsletter be submitted to that email address.
Website. Ms. Mankin would like to launch the redesigned website for the civic association at its
April meeting. She reported that she has moved about 60 percent of the content of the existing
website to the new platform. She will send committee members a link to the new website so
they can preview it.
Neighbor profiles. Ms. Mankin proposed distributing a list of five questions to a number of
folks in the neighborhood. Their responses would be the basis for short profiles in the
newsletter. Committee members will suggest questions for the list at the next meeting. Ms.
Mankin will begin thinking about who might be profiled.
Connection information. Mr. Adair said he will prepare a half-page flyer for the April meeting
of the civic association that will explain how residents can connect with the civic association and
other neighbors through the website, digital calendar, Google group, Facebook, and list-serve.

Story list. Committee members suggested the following ideas for articles in the April edition of
the newsletter:

Profile of Isom Nivins and Northside Neighborhood Pride Center.

Acknowledgement of young person accepted into gift program.
Stolen savings bonds found and returned to owner.
Recognition of two local artists, Laura Bidwa and Malcolm J.
Announcement of Roots & Roofs on May 4.
Litter clean-up scheduled for first Saturday of each month.
Outcome of neighborhood dialogue, including action forum.
Crime statistics for 2012.

Ms. Mankin will attempt to get the copy for the newsletter to Ms. Bidwa for review by Friday,
March 15.
Future meetings. The committee members agreed to meet at 6:30 p.m., rather than 6 p.m., on
the second Monday of each month.
The meeting adjourned about 7:40 p.m.
