MAIN TEXT
Standards for Defence
Requirements for Rubber for Machinery Mounts
SECTION 1
1

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

SCOPE

1.1
This standard specifies the requirements for six high quality natural rubber
materials, intended for use as the resilient component in the manufacture of shock and
vibration mounts in accordance with the Book of Reference (BRs) 8472 and 8473.
1.2
The six grades of compound are specified by their hardness range and are
designated RM 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7 as defined in Table 2.
1.3
This standard shall be read in conjunction with the appropriate drawing to fully
specify the size and type of resilient mount.
2

WARNING

The Ministry of Defence (MOD), like its contractors, is subject to both United Kingdom
and European laws regarding Health and Safety at Work, without exemption. All Defence
Standards either directly or indirectly invoke the use of processes and procedures that could
be injurious to health if adequate precautions are not taken. Defence Standards or their use
in no way absolves users from complying with statutory and legal requirements relating to
Health and Safety at Work.

The mandatory preconditions for the composition by mass per hundred of rubber
(phr) of each mix shall be in accordance with the requirements of Table 1.
5.2
The mixes shall be based entirely on high quality plantation (Hevea) rubber.
vulcanised with sulfur /organic accelerator system and activated with stearic acid and zinc
oxide. The zinc oxide content shall not be less than 5 phr by mass of the natural rubber.
5.3
Grades of Hevea rubber, pale crepe, RSS1, 2L, 5, 5L or associated CV grades, are
permissible and shall meet the requirements of ISO 2000.
5.4
The accelerator shall be either N-cyclohexyl-2-benzothiazyl sulphenamide or
mercaptobenzthiazole. To boost the cure rate, an amount of thiuramsulphide accelerator
between 0.25 to 0.5phr shall be permitted.
5.5
All ingredients shall be of recognized rubber compounding quality unless
otherwise specified and they shall be uniformly dispersed. The vulcanizate shall be
homogeneous, substantially free from bloom and shall comply with all the relevant test
requirements of this standard.
5.6

PROCESSING AND QUALITY REQUIREMENTS

6.1 The manufacturer shall comply with the relevant requirements of BS 903 Part A64
and Def Stan 93-50 for processing of the rubber mix and the manufacture of items.
6.2 The oscillating disc curemeter characteristics of the mixes shall be determined in
accordance with BS 903 Part A60 between temperatures of 140 and 153C in order to
prevent excessive degradation of the elastomer. The cure applied to the test specimens and
resulting mounts shall be at least 95% of the optimum modulus
6.3 The quality system shall comply with the requirements of Def Stan 05-91 or 05-92,
depending on the status of the manufacturing operation.

DEF STAN 02-820/2

SECTION 2
7

TEST REQUIREMENTS

TEST SAMPLES

7.1
Rubber mixes. A test sheet as detailed in Def Stan 93-50 shall be prepared from
each batch of material under the manufacturers recommended curing instructions. In
addition, 8 type A creep test buttons complying with BS 903 part A15 shall be prepared.
7.2
Rubber items. During production, samples representative of each type of mount
shall be selected from each production lot. A sample shall consist of a sufficient number of
mounts that will enable tests to be carried out in order to verify that the state of cure is
satisfactory. In the case of press cures, one sample per production lot of each item shall
normally be taken. For steam pan or oven cures, one sample per curing cycle shall normally
be taken.
8

TESTING

8.1
Tested by the method specified, shall comply with the requirements given in
Table 2. Unless otherwise specified, the tests shall be conducted at 23 2C and ideally
50 5% relative humidity.
8.2
Physical tests: rubber items. Sample items, taken as described in 7.2, shall be
tested, having regard to thickness and surface finish of the items and whether standard test
pieces can be obtained from them. Where physical tests not complying with the appropriate
test methods given in the table are carried out, the requirements for the results of such tests
shall be agreed with the purchaser and/or the technical authority.
8.3
Chemical tests. Chemical analysis may be carried out on the rubber mix, the
sample test sheets, or sample items, as practicable, to verify that the composition is
essentially in accordance with clause 5. The methods described in BS 7164 and in BS 4181
shall be used where appropriate.
8.4
Special tests; rubber items. Sample items shall be tested in accordance with the
requirements of the drawing or specification for the particular item.

marked with the relevant batch details to avoid contamination and misuse in accordance
with BS 3574 and Def Stan 02-724.
9.2
It is the manufacturers responsibility to mark packages in accordance with any
legal requirements. In addition, the packages constituting a consignment shall each be
legibly and durably marked with the following details:
